Shaanie··on That Time I Posted Myself Out Of a Job
Canceling people for their offensive comments is hardly something new.
Shaanie··on That Time I Posted Myself Out Of a Job
The comments were personal attacks on the speaker, not aimed at the government or the military. There's a huge difference between those.

If the engineer had posted something criticizing the military outside of the context of the conference and without personally attacking the speaker, nothing would have happened. In fact, I bet the engineer had already done that multiple times before.

Shaanie··on That Time I Posted Myself Out Of a Job
I don't think it's thin-skinned to complain about those tweets. It would bother me too if someone who attended my presentation in professional capacity personally attacked me in a public way like that. It's absolutely completely unacceptable, even in a more casual setting (I'd expect to get banned or at least a stern warning if I said something like that on HN, for example).
Shaanie··on Names should be as short as possible while still being clear
I'm sure the names have different importance, though. A local variable name in a small method probably barely matters, whereas the name of a variable in a widely used external API matters quite a lot.
Shaanie··on VPN searches spike as pornography websites block access in Virginia
So is social media, and social media is likely worse, but hopefully you apply the same logic to that?
Shaanie··on How to 1.5x your salary through negotiation
Sometimes no, sometimes yes. 6 weeks of paid vacation, [p|m]aternity leave and heavily subsidized kindergartens etc can weigh heavier than extra pay, depending on your priorities in life.
Shaanie··on Code the shortest path first
Another way to think about it is that software that focus on performance loses market share to software that focuses on other things.
Shaanie··on AI moderation is no match for hate speech in Ethiopian languages
Supposedly 1-2 million people speak Arakan, so I doubt it's very difficult to find enough moderators. It's likely not worth the effort to do so unless regulation forces you to do it, however.
Shaanie··on Tell HN: Interview take home assessments without feedback are frustrating
Presumably you can't tell if the applicant spent 2h or 6h, and in practice the 6h solution is probably going to look much better. So sure, in theory you may be right, but in practice I bet you select for people who spent (much) more than 2 hours.
Shaanie··on Tell HN: Interview take home assessments without feedback are frustrating
Presumably the answer is "we don't, because we're ok with filtering out a few very experienced developers if that reduces the risk of a bad hire".

It's pretty rare IME to encounter interviews which are closely related to the actual work you'll be doing, mostly it seems like the main purpose is to filter out the heaps of bad/mediocre developers.

Shaanie··on Russian paramilitary chief says his forces will turn around
So Prigozhin just forgot about his family before starting the fight? Or didn't think anyone would think to threaten his family? Seems very unlikely to me.
Shaanie··on Russian paramilitary chief says his forces will turn around
Is there anyone who thinks that the way a president dresses and acts isn't propaganda?.. It's not exactly some huge revelation.
Shaanie··on Tesla FSD Beta ignores stop sign in live test with Ross Gerber and Dan O’Dowd [video]
You'll have to correct for more variables than that, since presumably the average Tesla FSD driver is going to look quite different than the average driver.
Shaanie··on Tesla FSD Beta ignores stop sign in live test with Ross Gerber and Dan O’Dowd [video]
No, it wouldn't necessarily have to. Self-driving cars are going to fail in ways that seem very stupid to us, but they might handle "normal" accident-prone situations much better than humans and thus be much safer overall.
Shaanie··on A case for toe socks
From a quick search it seems like west of Germany, Italy and Greece are mostly shoes-inside countries. I definitely wouldn't say that's ultra common.
Shaanie··on Sub.Rehab – See where Reddit communities have relocated
Have you used any alternative? The biggest issue is visual noise and ads imo.
Shaanie··on Releasing an indie game on 3 consoles at once and failing financially (2016)
I think overcooked has a quite different audience, being cooperative rather than competitive. I won't buy a competitive local multiplayer game nowadays, whereas I've bought a lot of cooperative ones to play with my SO, and that's probably fairly common?
Shaanie··on Goodbye, Body Mass Index
I've never really understood people complaining about BMI. Yes, it doesn't work for body builders or amputees, but are you actually one of these? Most of the complaints I've heard are from fat Americans who think they'd be "a skeleton" if they were a healthy BMI (say below 175 pounds at 6 feet).

Feels mostly like a "it's not a great measurement so it's fine that I'm fat according to BMI" excuse to me.

Shaanie··on Toyota Touts Solid State EVs with 932-Mile Range, 10-Minute Charging by 2027
What's the car company revenue in the modern west vs India and other developing nations? I'm sure the developing world will still want ICE vehicles, but is that really where the money is?
Shaanie··on Reddit appears to be restoring edited/deleted comments
Personally I'd love to have an upvote and subreddit filter. So "delete all comments except the ones on /r/askscience or the ones with above 100 upvotes".
Shaanie··on Everything must be paid for twice (2022)
The contractors tax situation is irrelevant to you. The only thing that matters is income vs expenditure. Or in this situation, "how many hours do I have to work to pay the contractor's hourly fee?" and "how much faster is the contractor?". The tax stuff are just details around this.

In my example, a contractor who's twice as fast needs to cost $76 or less per hour . Thrice as fast is $114 or less.

You're right in principle though, just not on that calculation. In Sweden we have tax deductions for private citizens exactly to combat this issue: up to a certain amount per year can be deducted from your income, just like a company can, for certain services (such as cleaning or house repairs).

Shaanie··on Everything must be paid for twice (2022)
I suspect it's way more likely that you'd do a bad job yourself and need to hire a professional to fix it.
Shaanie··on Everything must be paid for twice (2022)
I think that's a logical error; I don't care about how much the contractor makes after tax, I only care what the cost to me is.

After all, if the contractor had some strange anomaly where he pays 100% of his income in tax, why would that matter to you?

Shaanie··on Everything must be paid for twice (2022)
I'd like to see the math for your calculations here, I suspect something is a bit iffy. As an example I'll use Swedish taxes which should be comparable to Danish ones.

If we assume I'm a contractor charging $100 per hour and take the cash as salary:

(100/1.3142) * 0.5 = $38 left after payroll tax and the top income tax rate (50%).

So if I'm just as fast and good as a professional, the professional needs to charge $38 per hour or less for it to be worth it. But in reality, a professional is probably at least 2x as fast as me, making it $76. That's probably less than they charge, so it's worth paying for a professional.

Shaanie··on Recipient of Europe's largest ever seed round doesn't even have a product
They won't compete on salary, there's probably plenty of talented people who simply do not want to live in the US due to the work culture, especially French workers. 35 hour work week with 6 weeks of paid vacation is worth a lot I imagine.
Shaanie··on Show HN: Java REST without annotations, DI nor reactive streams
Hehe, that specific case is probably something that most people run into at least once. I've seen several cases of it in production too, where someone refactored something years in the past and accidentally disabled the cache without anyone noticing.
Shaanie··on Reddit Strike Has Started
Self-moderation doesn't work for any reasonably large community, if you don't want your community to be generic Facebook/Instagram quality posts. Community-based moderation inevitably makes any subreddit into "fun phots/videos" because people who browse largely don't care about where the post is, they might not even realize what subreddit it is in when up-voting.

Subreddits like askscience or askhistorians would be impossible without extremely strict moderation, for obvious reasons.

Shaanie··on AI cameras will spot motorway litter louts and enhance issuing of fines
There's no single thing you can point to as "the issue" (unless you just point to fossil fuels in general, I guess). Driving a couple of thousand miles per year as a hobby is pretty bad, that's quite a lot of "unnecessary" co2 emissions. Will it cause mass starvation and make environments uninhabitable? No, not by itself, but it'll contribute more than most hobbies. I believe it's in the same ballpark as a round-trip flight across the Atlantic, for reference.
Shaanie··on WFH – Watched from Home: Office 365 and workplace surveillance creep (2022)
People who don't work are usually economic parasites for those who do, so it makes sense to encourage working regardless of which economic system is used.
Shaanie··on One million cancel broadband as living costs rise
Top marginal rate in Sweden, 50%~ starts at $59k and our VAT is 25%. So eh, UK doesn't seem so bad.
