Sha1rholder··on Decision models like Jev don't beat LLM-as-a-judge or traditional classifiers
That looks super fair to me
Sha1rholder··on On social reality in China
In fact, the reason I know this can’t be any kind of “popular childhood song” is that all genuinely popular childhood songs have themes like “blow up the school,” “git rid of your mom and dad,” “skip school,” and kids’ dirty jokes. It’s the same all over China.

And we do talk about it often.

This “childhood song” example is completely out of step with China’s social reality, just as you can easily recognize at a glance “an old British poem” forged by an American.

Sha1rholder··on On social reality in China
Aside from its portrayal of Chinese people as having a “collective insecurity” and a “chip-on-your-shoulder,” which are the only 2 parts that I agreed, this article’s depiction of Chinese people as a group is simply not true.

At its core, it is a kind of projection along the lines of: “I’m an enlightened, worldly Western person who is almost immune to propaganda, and Chinese people are a mixed bag, but overall they are xxx.”

This is not the social reality in China. As the author’s background indicates, this is the imagining of an American who moved to the States at the age of four and has some interest in China due to ancestry.

Just to give one example—because there isn’t enough space here, and I can’t be bothered to write out more:

> Here is the first verse of a popular children’s song: ...

And yet, in more than twenty years of my life interacting with people of different ages from all over China, I have never once heard of this supposedly “popular children’s song.”

After all this article is just another BS about “It is concerning how much China blablabla...” Actually, on _Social Reality in_ Chinese American is they consider those “Chinese Chinese” as basically gorillas, parading them in front of other European Americans as if to say: “Look, these Chinese Chinese are my ancestors! Let’s study them together—and just look at how much further we Chinese Americans have evolved compared with them.” It IS a fancy imagination for those who really don't know zero about what's the reality of the people in the GFW.

Sha1rholder··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
You are vastly underestimating the level of price.

Accounts ARE expensive.

Sha1rholder··on DeepSeek Harness Desktop for macOS and Windows
It's open source. Unlike Claude Code your beloved friend which is closed-source and uses steganography along with an astonishing array of telemetry and fingerprinting techniques to conduct intelligence analysis on its users.
Sha1rholder··on Pi.dev: You Said No MCP
An article pretending to address its title, but just beating around the bush.
Sha1rholder··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
No. Much more expensive.
Sha1rholder··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
So, could this push more software to publish to the official Nixpkgs?
Sha1rholder··on Markdown in /src
That kinda like what delta.dev is trying to do.

I don't like it though.

Sha1rholder··on Good people refuse to do bad things
The last line/heading of this article makes its main point super clear. Don't deceive yourself (and others).
Sha1rholder··on KDE turns 30 and someone's brought an AI-native desktop proposal
This article has no content whatsoever... Just sending the links of relevant materials to AI would produce a better-organized result than this.

Yeah yeah yeah...

> "Our model is extremely safe though it broke our sandbox and hacked foo bar... But you can't use our model for Cybersecurity (i don't care whether you're team blue) without our permissions or we'll ban you. And open-weight models are so dangerous let's ban them."

That's what AI companies that "focus on safety" did.

Sha1rholder··on Copyright does more harm than good and should be abolished

Sha1rholder··on DeepSeek launching v4.1 flash cheaper and more capable than v4 pro
> I'm not sure that anyone is running production workloads against an API that bills twice as much for a chunk of the day.

I'm not sure that anyone will mind running production workloads against an API that bills half as much for a chunk of the day.

Sha1rholder··on Copyright does more harm than good and should be abolished
This is a even more pointless debate, because the largest-scale trampling of copyright in human history has produced several of today's hottest tech companies.

Sha1rholder··on LLMs: Intelligence vs. Cost
The more dimensions you take into consideration, the larger the proportion of the Pareto frontier becomes across all distributions, and making it harder to choose.

Sha1rholder··on Why do so many tools have JSON config files?
I find TOML is nowhere near as good as YAML. I'd even rather use jsonc.
Sha1rholder··on Internet centralization and the original sin of NAT
> Furthermore the newer protocols like NAT make an even clearer technical distinction, clients can have no dedicated ipv4, but servers must retain that property. See? They are different in technical nature.

No. Both servers and clients can have no public ipv4

Sha1rholder··on Internet centralization and the original sin of NAT
China has very few IPv4 addresses per capita. Here in Hangzhou, China, I have to pay China Telecom 850 CNY per year just to get an IPv4 address. That's not a trivial amount of money for us. And among the three major telecom operators, only one even offers this service.
Sha1rholder··on Internet centralization and the original sin of NAT
Not every place is the same.
Sha1rholder··on Internet centralization and the original sin of NAT
In regions where IPv4 addresses are scarce, you may not even have a single public IPv4 address. I'm fortunate to have one, but still needs NAT.
Sha1rholder··on Internet centralization and the original sin of NAT
Time to set up IPV6.

Vegetables grown in shit, garbage, and pesticides are fine as long as the levels of harmful residues are low enough by the time they reach people's mouths. Not appealing, but also not that "dystopian"
Sha1rholder··on Ask HN: Why do you use Ubuntu?
Simply because Ubuntu uses apt.

1. TrueNAS and PVE are based on Debian (apt); 2. the OS images provided by major Chinese cloud vendors like Aliyun and Tencent Cloud that use dnf (like Rocky Linux and Fedora) are MUCH older than Debian and Ubuntu.

I simply want my environment to be more consistent and scripts more reusable.

Sha1rholder··on VMs won't contain cyber-capable agents
A gun cannot fire unless someone loads and triggers it, an LLM cannot operate computer unless someone translates what it said to shell scripts. An LLM is super comparable to a gun, not a computer worm which is consistently dangerous.
