SethTro··on Nvidia Closes Out Q4 and FY2021 with Another Round of Record Earnings
It will be curious to see if CMP revenue is broken out in future earnings. Nvidia has been reaping great profit from the crypto-craze, it would be interesting to see that number quantified.
SethTro··on Can Governments Stop Bitcoin?
This article took a more holistic view than BTC Endgame (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26198210) but the author doesn't seem to have landed on a position only enumerated "maybe, maybe not"
SethTro··on Perseverance Rover lands on Mars [video]
You can see what this page looked like for Curiousity at https://mars.nasa.gov/msl/multimedia/images/?page=0&per_page...

Can't wait till they start posting raw images :)

SethTro··on Bitfinex, the Italian network behind the boss that makes Bitcoin tremble
Over the last year Tether has looked more and more like fraud. I was reading this article covering some of the recent developments since Tether's failed attempt to suppress discovery by New York's Attorney General

SethTro··on All Mersenne prime exponents below 100m tested at least once
Ben Delo joined the project and has been running several hundred AWS cores.[1]

Slightly related a new method to validate the result was found which means that they no longer need to run a 2nd double check run to validate that there wasn't floating point rounding errors[2]. Interestingly this credits a HN thread as the source of inspiration[3].

SethTro··on It is high time we let go of the Mersenne Twister (2019)
PCG and LCG (permuted/linear congruential generator) seem much stronger. This is one of my favorite presentations on the subject https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45Oet5qjlms&t=2s

and this matrix breaks it down well https://www.pcg-random.org/index.html

SethTro··on Trump says he fired top cybersecurity official Christopher Krebs
> Reuters recently reported he expected to be fired after he pushed back against false claims that Democrats "rigged" the election, a claim that Trump has heavily promoted.

Sad day when doing your job means you get fired.

SethTro··on GitHub Source Code Leak
Commit message was "felt cute, might put gh source code on dmca repo now idk" https://web.archive.org/web/20201104050026if_/https://github...
SethTro··on Monitoring a high risk conjunction between two large defunct objects in LEO
I have seen a third conjecture tracker that displayed odds of current(?) collisions as arcs plotted in real time. Do you know what this system is called? I searched for 10+ minutes and can't find it.
SethTro··on Monitoring a high risk conjunction between two large defunct objects in LEO
Only if one of the two objects has passed over one of their tracker stations (and they got a good scan of it)
SethTro··on Applebot
Any idea what Apple is using this for?

The bottom of the page says "Apple Search may take the following into account when ranking web search results:", is this another confirmation that Apple is developing a search engine?

SethTro··on No Hello (2013)
Google has a whole list of these (ActionableIM, OnlyHello, ContextPlz); I'm into FastHello

1. Open the chat window, and type your question with no "hello". Do not press enter. 2. Instead, press Ctrl-A and then Ctrl-X to cut your question out of the chat window and into your clipboard. 3. type and send "hello" 4. Pause 2-5 seconds 5. Ctrl-P and enter to send your full question.

SethTro··on Facebook remote salary adjustments are coming
Article doesn't mention the formula for adjustment.

I heard it's 5-15% of base salary depending on what state you move from/to and partially dependent on level.

SethTro··on [dead]
It's been interesting to watch public sentiment outside of tech.

My personal anecdote is a class mate of mine started at FB and used to wear all their swag and talk it up, slow public sentiment had moved against them and now they say they work in tech or "design users experiences" when asked.

SethTro··on A $43,859.00 Refurbished Mac Pro
It's pretty standard to have 8 slots [1] on motherboards and rarely 16 slots [2]

64 gig DDR4 modules cost ~$300 [3] 128 gig DDR4 server modules can cost as little as ~$800 [4]

8x64 = 0.5 TB of DDR4 ram = 8300 = $2,400 16x128 = 1.5 TB of DDR4 ram = 16800 = $12,800

SethTro··on Facebook announces policy changes ahead of 2020 elections
This is very likely in response to the Stop Hate For Profit campaign[1], it has been picking up steam the last week with a bunch of major brands[2] (REI, Coca-Cola, Unilever) saying they're going to pause FB's cash cow, ads, for a month. So Zuckerberg was forced to respond.

Pressure (internal and external) on the tech giants can force them to change.

SethTro··on Into Thin Error: Mountaineer Ed Viesturs on Making Mistakes (2010)
This is something called "results oriented thinking" it can be very destructive to learning in noise environments (e.g. poker, investing)
SethTro··on Protests about police brutality are met with wave of police brutality across US
Some of this is being documented on Github.

https://github.com/2020PB/police-brutality/tree/master/repor...

There are several open issues that tech could help out on (IPFS backup, front end for viewing, ...)

SethTro··on A happy ending for Seattle’s Bop Street Records: a nonprofit buys the collection
They've been digitalizing media and only streaming it when it's outside of copyright. This means many 2050+ for recent music but ~1970s music and earlier is fair game.
SethTro··on New Abbott SARS-CoV-2 antibody test has 99.90% specificity and 100% sensitivity
Thanks for the confirmation.
SethTro··on New Abbott SARS-CoV-2 antibody test has 99.90% specificity and 100% sensitivity
Slightly misleading headline. The test is not new, it's been launched since April and has already shipped 10M tests.

According to https://abbott.mediaroom.com/2020-05-08-Research-from-Univer...

SethTro··on Google Authenticator gets its first update in years
It now allows backup which is a really nice feature to avoid the my phone broke and now I'm locked out problem.
SethTro··on YOLOv4: Optimal Speed and Accuracy of Object Detection
I'm a little skeptically of the Swish implementation after looking at Table 2.

Method | Top 1 | Top 5 No-op | 78% | 94% Swish | 64.5% | 86% Mish | 79% | 94.5%

Swish is the only value that decreases performance (and by a huge magnitude) but a very related methodology improves performance hummm...

SethTro··on Xubuntu 20.04
Looks like Ubuntu 20.04 came out 24 hours ago

SethTro··on Mathematica v12.1
This is one of the few pieces of non-free software I'm happy to pay for.

I've been doing some PenPlotter for fun, I wonder if I can use Mathematica with HatchFilling for some of my plotting now.

SethTro··on Improved chess game compression (2018)
The article doesn't say it anywhere but I sure hope all the games are backed up to disk/tape in txt format and that this is just used to keep in-memory DB/memcache size down.

Otherwise an interesting article about injecting domain knowledge to improve beyond what's possible with a normal compression algorithm.

SethTro··on FLIF – Free Lossless Image Format
The progressive loading video is great!
SethTro··on 5/3nm Wars Begin
> Today, the node names are little more than marketing terms. 'The node designation is becoming more misleading and meaningless," said Samuel Wang, an analyst at Gartner. "For example, at 5nm or 3nm, there is no single geometry that is actually 5nm or 3nm."
SethTro··on Nuclear waste recycled into diamond batteries
> Temperature – physically stable at 750 °C.

Yep, I'd like to see a source on this.

SethTro··on Germany looks to step up coal exit timetable
it's not expensive considering the alternative is we all die in a giant fireball.

edit: Also currently on HN frontpage is "Climate threats now dominate long-term risks, survey of global leaders finds" so maybe adverting that is worth the cost.
