This seems much more a tool for practicing the stuff you learn in another context to me, rather than a way of learning in itself. You can use it without the social pressure of stumbling slowly through sentences with another person.
I've heard people argue the exact opposite - intense work cultures tire out the male working class. That combined with a gender culture that discourages women being forward with their intentions, and no way to meet people of other genders socially, means it becomes difficult to actually meet or date people. There is a lack of free time, a lack of opportunity, and a lack of motivation.
Frankly, it sounds to me like the issue would be solved by bringing in better working conditions.
They've been gradually pushing fascist laws into place for years, this is just the latest in a long stream. I honestly don't understand why nobody seems more concerned about stuff like this.
There is the problem of it replacing real jobs, but this is not unique to the field.
The main problem, in my eyes, is AI porn that mimics real people. This is the main place I'd like to see some real restriction.
Having said that, I do not believe that it is fair to assume a person who believes themselves trans to be mistaken based purely on a personal hypothetical anecdote.
If I could avoid that step and still have type annotations and tooling support, I would be a happier person.
Plus, money DOES allow you to hire outside consultants and teachers.
Decentralising the chip foundries is a necessary step, arguably one that should've been made long ago.
If you allow them to crack down on protesting, then it won't be long before we're getting black-bagged, and dear old aunty will go on "extended holiday" because she disagreed with the government position.
We've seen it happen many times in the last century, in countries across the world, and the UK has been getting steadily worse over the last 20 years.
The slow creep of authoritarianism has seen many scary laws getting passed and practically no media attention on them. Everyone just shrugs, rather than actually trying to defend our freedom.
Maybe we could be merciful and just cut off their hands so they can't do it again, I hear that worked just great in the middle ages. I wonder why they stopped?
Much like the moon missions, the side-effect benefits that it encourages will likely end up making such a mission worthwhile for the tech alone.
I don't understand your criticism of starship though, would you clarify why you think it's not suitable?
People have the right to make aesthetic choices about the things in their life. I would be pissed if someone came into my house and painted my walls without my permission. Even if I agree with the cause, it's my choice to make.
I do agree with you though, it is a very desirable way to work. I tried to get Immerse working, but it was just such a buggy mess that I gave up. Hopefully Simula can do it better.
I would suggest giving it to charity, OP. My mother always said even poor folks should be giving at least 15% of their income to charity, but if you have more than you need, no reason not to increase that number.
