Semaphor··on Where's the Beef?: The lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't
Lotao is the one I use, DM has a house-brand with the same percentages. I thought the US would have something similar, but at least ChatGPT didn’t find anything.
Semaphor··on Where's the Beef?: The lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't
Planted has the issues most meat replacements have, a lot of ingredients, and a higher carb count. Not an issue for everyone, but it is for me.

Planted: 10 ingredients, 5.6g/100g carbs in the finished product

Pea/Jackfruit granules: 2 ingredients, 1.9g/100g carbs in the dry product (so roughly 0.8g/100g in the finished product)

Semaphor··on Where's the Beef?: The lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't
I had long given up on lab-grown meat. It started feeling like fusion, always around the corner, but never there (or at least not in an affordable way).

What replaced almost all ground beef (except in burgers) for me, was Jackfruit. More specifically, the combination 90% pea protein, 10% jackfruit. Granules that can be rehydrated with boiling water in 2 minutes, price competitive with discounter mince, no extra ingredients, no high carb count. It has a good texture and tastes mostly like whatever you season it with.

Semaphor··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
> Vaping is equivalent to shooting heroin or doing crack

That’s a feature of the juice the mainstream products come with, not of vaping in general.

Semaphor··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
I keep finding out about new crazyness for modern vapes. That’s insane. I’ll keep vaping at 0 nic with hand-built coils and DIY mixed liquids ;)
Semaphor··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
Opposite here. Taken me hundreds of tries to quit smoking (none worked, vaping was the only thing that allowed me to), vaping I sometimes just don’t do, never had that with smoking, where I sometimes switched to menthol so I could keep smoking while sick…
Semaphor··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
> where 5% is the standard

What? 50mg/ml is the standard? Or am I miscalculating something here? When I switched from cigs to vaping (back in 2012, not really comparable to now, but still), I went with very high nicotine levels of 36mg/ml which was pretty harsh on the throat, and within a year I was at 3mg/ml. Nowadays I’m at zero.

Semaphor··on The Claude Delusion
Feedback is one thing, but another is complete memory. I used to stop talking in a thread once gpt solved my issue.

But then it would bring it up again in another thread, treating it as an active issue.

So now I always close with "thanks, that worked. Don't reply"

Semaphor··on English: A vs. An
> but not the rule governing why.

Be glad you didn’t have to learn German, our grammatical gender only has more exceptions than rules.

Semaphor··on Salesforce Global Outage
I mean, if you really need redundancy, isn’t a second instance on a VPS somewhere that you manually switch over to, enough?

Over multiple ISPs, so far internet outages for more then a few minutes is very rare (though the few minutes would make me not want to host something requiring high availability; and a cut cable is really annoying because there simply is no quick fix), power outages even rares, I experienced 3 in 40 years, and the longest was 6 hours.

Semaphor··on Introducing System One Models and Jev
I personally just find it convenient, even in my 3.5 room apartment. Though I do have switches that work.
Semaphor··on People who can't picture anything are rewriting the science of imagination
I sometimes called it "textual memory of an image", but I also liked TFA with "we experience these as an awareness of a set of spatial facts"
Semaphor··on People who can't picture anything are rewriting the science of imagination
I don’t have ADHD¹, there. But anyway, while I have aphantasia, almost everyone I talk to reports being able to see images, most being able to manipulate them. From my incredibly small sample size of ~20, my sister was the only one with possibly mild aphantasia, 1 guy online and a girl I know possibly have hyperphantasia (very realistic images coming into their mind’s eye unbidden), and everyone else were confused about me not being able to imagine/see anything.

¹: Though I do (likely) have auditory processing disorder which wikipedia called ADHD for the ears, so maybe it fits.

Semaphor··on The case against JPEG XL
Is there a way to have fast on-the-fly WebP encoding? When i checked it, it was unusably slow (multiple seconds for large images), but maybe that was the implementation. That alone made JXL far more interesting to us.
Semaphor··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
This behavior predates modern AI. Maybe it’s getting worse, but without high limits (which lower revenue) adsense will result in a lot of scams.
Semaphor··on So you want to use OpenRouter?
Under privacy, ignored, I put providers that always suck. Digital Ocean, OpenInference, DeepInfra, AtlasCloud, and Alibaba (that one is different, it doesn’t suck in the same way as the others with a dumb model, but instead it’s heavily censored and doesn’t like being used as RP model in Skyrim).
Semaphor··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
FWIW, one article is very short on details, it’s a slightly expanded press release, and the other is a video. I’m not sure either is what’s needed more on HN.
Semaphor··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
Yeah, it's the same for me, but luckily those are very rare
Semaphor··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
> This is quite common if you have full on aphantasia.

Is it? I’ve never really researched common aphantasia behavior, but I’ve seen many mentions of aphantasia in fantasy/scifi subreddits where those of us with it still love reading. I can imagine (heh) it, but I wonder if there’s some kind of data regarding it?

Semaphor··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
FWIW, there’s a famous(-ish) fantasy author with aphantasia (Mark Lawrence), and I also have aphantasia, yet I absolutely love reading and if I would have to choose only one entertainment for the rest of my live, it’d be reading.

But I can’t stand elaborate descriptions (it’s almost always landscapes, rarely do authors feel the need to describe anything in as excruciating details as landscapes), which might be related to those descriptions not building up to some kind of image in my head.

Semaphor··on Antiquated HTML Snippets and Artefacts
Ohh, conditional comments. We had so many IE holdouts on our site, I think only around 2021 I removed the last IE specific fallbacks, and I think some conditional comments were a thing until 2020.

I’m not sure when I removed a bunch of `msapplication-` fields, but probably after 2021 ;)

I guess I can remove `apple-touch-` and `application-name` stuff next…

Semaphor··on My practical approach to surfing the web safely
People clearly like lying… or just maybe their experience is different than yours for a multitude of reasons. I have absolutely no clear difference.
Semaphor··on Sony makes bold claim about game ownership
> Gamers will refuse to buy a PS6 if there's not an ironclad guarantee that they own the games they purchase, be it digital or disc form.

I highly doubt that. I’d say 99%, probably more, won’t care either way. People barely care on PC, and people on consoles are generally used to more abuse.

Semaphor··on ChatGPT Is Throwing 404
Was troubleshooting a strange SSD issue with ChatGPT. Apparently this outage resulted in losing the latter half of it. My uploaded files it requested are still in the library, but the actual conversation is gone.
Semaphor··on Play Store blocks AuroraStore, hurting GrapheneOS users
I really like the Firefox usability. For what I do it works great. It has uBo and a bunch of other extensions, and if course it can sync with desktop.
Semaphor··on Benjamin Franklin’s alter egos gave him the most freedom
Thanks, I did read articles about it back then, but while PRISM was mentioned always and everywhere, none of those I read mentioned the other ones, or if they did, just as an aside.
Semaphor··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
As someone working for a small publisher: The amount of "don’t care" is amazing. We tried 2 different big and popular "programmatic bidding" platforms. The amount of scams and extra-shoddy ads was crazy. And for each we realized after talking to our partner manager that caring about that is not expected. There are no or not enough controls to prevent it.

We managed to get into google ad exchange (via a personal connection as we’d normally be too small to get there directly, it’s essentially adsense with more control and more money), and compared to the other players we saw, they are much better by default already. But then you can also set minimums etc. This will lower your payout, but significantly raise the quality of your ads.

So when a publisher has all those scam ads, it’s either lack of knowledge and care, or a choice.

Semaphor··on Benjamin Franklin’s alter egos gave him the most freedom
I must say I find it interesting you say "cannot have missed" as I never heard of stateroom or bullrun before
Semaphor··on Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU
Including a very healthy metal scene, Martröð (50 % icelandic) and Nexion were recent favorites of mine.
Semaphor··on You Know GDPR Is Good Based on Who Hates It
The idea is to make people think about what they say, and maybe not declare themselves the winner in advance. Kinda like you do by declaring what my intentions were.
