SecurityMinded··on The complete list of alternatives to all Google products – TechSpot
Just looking down the list makes me tired. If I have to give my data to one and only one party in return of many valuable service, I chose it to be google. I know they are not the initial google anymore but I do not have time to redesign my life with many, but many-many privacy focused apps, just because. My privacy from one single company is not that important. Benefits I get in return, and combining them under one umbrella, which is google, is extremely valuable on the other hand.
SecurityMinded··on Ask HN: The devil's hiring. Would you work for him?
Give me job security and 50% more than what I am making, which is not much with my current salary in very low 6-digits, I'll start working for the devil tomorrow.

Life is not so rosy to follow your ideals and inclusivity and all that crap when you're past 50 and still in a non-managerial role in tech industry. So, everyone who is poo-poo'ing ggogle's and facebook's whatevrer other companies being the evil, get off your high horses. Before you know it, you will be unemployable. Think about it.

SecurityMinded··on Ask HN: What is something important I should start doing in my 20s?
Start saving for retirement. Every $100 you can put in to your retirement savings per month will come back to you at least 30-40 times over when you retire at 65 or may be even earlier.
SecurityMinded··on A Billionaire-Funded Website Is Trying to “Cancel” University Professors
What is wrong with fighting the liberal professors with their own weapons ? Yay for YAF!
SecurityMinded··on Is Substack the Media Future We Want?
Not a big fan of substack but anything better than liberal media, like Newyorker or NYT. Suck it idiots!
SecurityMinded··on Companies are fleeing California. Blame bad government
Everybody with a modicum of common sense was saying this for the past decade and more I lived in this god damned quasi-communist state. Now, when Larry Ellison and Elon Musk flee, it makes it to the headlines. Good grief.
SecurityMinded··on Ask HN: What was a book that changed your life?
Only one: Atlas Shrugged. I was very late in life when I read it, as in my late 30s but it has a very big impact on me.
SecurityMinded··on Undocumented immigrants far less likely to commit crimes in U.S. than citizens
Of course this P-O-S statement is totally disregarding the illegal alien (not friggen undocumented immigrant bullshit) who commits a crime, does it so spectacularly, like killing people, deling drugs and what not. Of course if you compare this to the pick-pocketer US citizens, it will give you the skewed statistic as the a-hole writer of this piece wants you to believe. This Chris Barncard person should burn in hell.
SecurityMinded··on Ask HN: What did you purchase that measurably improved your quality of life?
An Acer chromebook from Staples. I paid less than $200. It is new, it has 15 inch tocscreen and a celeron CPU, passmark score of which blows almost all other chromebook computers that I have seen advertising in the price range double the price of mine.

I use it to work with my company provided Amazon Workspaces windows virtual desktop. It has a client for chromebook. It is sitting next to my Core-i7 dell laptop and I only use the dell for video conferencing as the voice and video doesn't translate well over virtual desktops. It is the best computer investment I made, in the sense of bang for the buck. By the way, when work is slow, I can minimize the AWS client and do my daily surfing reading HN etc on the same computer.

SecurityMinded··on California Exodus: An online industry seizes Covid to sell the Red State Dream
I didn't know it was so wide spread. I thought myself a fringe californian who wishes to move out of this hell hole. Seeing I am not a minority is actually a breath of fresh air. Can't wait until the day I say adios commiefornia.
SecurityMinded··on Against Xkcd 1357
Your right to free speech doesn't necessarily mean that I have to listen to you. If I am the ,edia platform you want to shout on top of, well, what you sy better be something that my audience wants to hear. Otherwise, I am not obligated to give you the time of day. That time is costing me money as a media broadcaster. If your half baked ideas is going to cause me a drop in audience following, hence advertising revenue, you can go find yourself another sympathetic ear. It ain't here. Second and fourth squares are saying exactly this and I could not agree with it any more. One of the best Xkcd strips. Good thing it was hashed out. I have forgotten about it.
SecurityMinded··on Against Xkcd 1357
I am not sure what he was smoking when he wrote this blog post but he definitely was not thinking straight. Xkcd has hit the nail right on its head. Nobody is obligated to listen to you and agree with your half baked brain farts. It actually hits too close to home today, with this inclusion, BLM, etc. BS. If you suck at what you are doing, I do not care what your skin color is, what your political beliefs are, you deserve to be put out to pasture. Period.

Perfect example of a millennial snowflake, who thinks what he says is important no matter what.

SecurityMinded··on Do countries lose religion as they gain wealth? (2013)
Is this a serious question. Religion is only there to give hope to the hopeless. As countries gets wealthier, less hopeless people exists in that country, in turn less need for the religions. Who can say that I did not move a finger and god sent me all this wealth ? I mean other than the church charlatans. People wake up to the truth of "if I work more I get out of this poverty quicker" very simple premise if you think about it.
SecurityMinded··on Unwoke – Jobboard for people that just want to work and not be activists
BLM and other activists already flagged the post. Wnder how long will it survive to be on the visible list.

One of the best ideas I have seen here on HN lately. Good job who came up with it. I wish you success, but don't get your hopes up in today's political climate.

SecurityMinded··on Show HN: I built a free, simple login service. Would you use this?
Anything that requires me to traverse through different applications to login to a website, unless it is managing my money or very sensitive personal information, is NOT SIMPLE. And for those which require more than one app to login, I much prefer tried and true 2FA apps like google authenticator or Authy or RSA tokens etc. Email is inherently insecure. Why make my 2FA an email?
SecurityMinded··on Ask HN: Which book helped you understand the world?
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. HANDS DOWN!
SecurityMinded··on IBM looking for 12 years’ experience in Kubernetes administration
Im sure some fake resume from Indian owned sweatshops will have an H-1B visa holder with the non-existent 12 years kubernetes experience. Isn't it how they operate for any position anyways ? Good grief IBM...
SecurityMinded··on Two Years to Make $10 in Software Revenue
So, basically you have figured that you will not be able to extract money from big corporations with deep pockets and you decided to go for the small fish, i.e. the job seeker. What a novel idea... If I had a penny every time I have seen this model repeat itself, I could probably buy the fanciest drink in Starbucks menu. I was hoping for a miracle solution to make companies pay for a novel idea, but nope.. No such luck. If you can not rob the rich, rob the poor. Move on... nothing new here obviously.
SecurityMinded··on Ford employees ask the company to stop making police cars
Time to buy GM and Chrysler stocks... Stupidity knows no bounds obviously.
SecurityMinded··on Turkey determined to control social media platforms, Erdogan says
On the paper, Turkiye is a democracy. In reality, since 1950's it was not. It is a dictatorship or oligarchy at best, funded by the big money of the world, mostly from the US. Rigged elections, placing puppet governments (like Tayyip) is an ongoing theme. At the time of election, people are given the impression of who they are electing as it is in a democracy, while the result is already known by the powers that be. Other than few military takeovers of the country since 1960, this country have never had fair and clear elections. Hence, Tayyip's puppet government has ben brought to action by the same powers that be, to decimate the Turkish armed forces, so, no more of those nasty military take-over actions can be repeated. Turkiye has turned into a Banana republic for what it is worth.
SecurityMinded··on The U.S. can now set its own rates for mail from China and other countries
Why aren't they asking the recipients pay for the loss ?Obviously people are so gung-ho for buying cheap chinese crap from ali-express or wish, they can pay the additional couple of bucks to hav etheir packages delivered to them or send them back to china.
SecurityMinded··on Amazon added a non-compete after the employee entered the U.S. on an L1B visa
L-1 visas, A or B doesn't need non-compete. Employee is already tied to the employer. That visa is not a portable visa like H-1B. This is all a tempest in a teapot, nothing more.
SecurityMinded··on Please Pay for Your News
News is public knowledge. What you pay is the opinions of the news reporters. I personally have no interest in paying for politically skewed opinions of a pol-sci grad of few years ago. That is why I will never ever subscribe or read any newspaper in print or online. When I acidentally click on a link which takes me to NY Times or LA times or Atlantic titled website, I immediately close it without even perusing the first few lines of content, because I know it will be a political writing, not objective news.
SecurityMinded··on DiscoverAli – A weekly newsletter of inexpensive, interesting products
weekly newsletter of cheap chinese crap. nothing I bought from Ali Express or Wish lasted more than couple of uses. why would I bother to read about lies about how great and cheap these stuff are.
SecurityMinded··on Free America Now (@elonmusk)
Why do all the rich people want to "free America now" ? Would it be because their factories are not running ? Get real people. Do not follow the wolf in sheep's skin. If something happens to you because you contracted the virus, you will be no more than collateral damage, as long as Tesla's roll off the production line.
SecurityMinded··on Ask HN: Why do most job sites hide salary?
Companies may not want to people who are only after the money, but they also do not ant to pay more than the absolute minimum for the workforce, they can get away with.

Say you are working at company A for $100K/yr for position X. Along comes company B, which needs to fill a Position A which you perfectly fit in. And assume they can pay $150K/yr to fill this position. But if you are like any average employee, a 10-15% increase in your salary can and will make you jump ship.

So, if they announce $150K/yr compensation on the kb listing, your brain will switch to 50% increase mode and knowing that you can get this much from them, you will most probably not settle for something less. On the other hand, let's assume the salary is not in the job listing and you get to the interview and asked the dreaded question, "What is your expectation of a yearly compensation for this position?" I am sure you will dance around a bit saying things like "Market rate" or "I am sure you will pay me in accordance with industry norms" etc. but when the push comes to the shove, you will give them a figure like $120K, a 20% increase if you will, on your current salary, to give yourself a wiggle room. And if they are like any average employer, they will low-ball you a bit to see what you are amenable to and come back with something like $116K. You are happy that you've got 16% raise while 10% would suffice you to jump ship. The new employer saved $34K/yr on you. Only you by the way and this practice can be multiplied many, many times, ending up with a huge chunk of change.

On the flip side, let's assume you were making $160K at your current position and you came to the interview to wrangle say, a $175K salary. When you say that, first they will dismiss your candidacy and look for someone cheaper. Failing to find this person, they know they can come back to you and say, yes we are willing to pay you $170K/yr, knowing your price. All they have lost is a few days or weeks in the process.

It is like the prostitute story: The guy sees a pretty woman at the bar.He approaches her and says,

"I will pay you a million dollars if you have sex with me tonight"

Woman thinks for a moment and says "yes".

The man turns around thinks for a minute and says

"How about $100?"

Woman frowns and feels insulted. Comes back saying

"what are you thinking? I am a whore or something?"

The guy answers.

"We established that fact that you are a whore. I am just trying to figure out your price"

Negotiating for a job is just that and as a company you do not want to trap yourself in a corner.

SecurityMinded··on Employers who use software to take screenshots of workers’ computers
And this is news how ? You are using a computer furnished by your employer and said emplyor has every right to monitor what uis being done on it in any way they can and want. My company uses ObserveIT and one of the features is to take screen captures, to be used in any way that company sees fit, now or later. If anyone has a problem, they can quit
SecurityMinded··on [dead]
Well, investing in private companies for equity, requires taking a risk. Looks like your risk was very high and company went bust. For all intents and purposes, you have lost your investment. If there is anything left over from the dissolution of this business, it must b being held by a board of trustees. You need to make your research and figure out if such residual money exists somewhere and if it does, go after it, preferably with a lawyer;s help, if your investment amount justifies it.
