SebFender··on The Insanity of Being a Software Engineer
Absolutely & very well said - my contention lies in the fact that certain skills are just that - technical. Especially when it comes to architecture, code, complex systems and so on.

I don't mind an illiterate Executive when it comes to basic manufacturing, cosmetics and so on - but when it comes to STEM subjects it becomes a dangerous gamble - especially when it comes to recognize a strong vs weak player.

Too many times I've seen weaker players get bumped up as the executive in charge is somewhat incompetent...

I've been lucky as my family forged my communication skills at a young age - but these days this is rare and I see extremely competent young players get sidelined quite rapidly... Hope is a mystery, but can be found.

SebFender··on The Insanity of Being a Software Engineer
Could be - But for me the hardest part of the job is now mostly dealing with illiteracy in tech from mid managers and up - I don't blame them as most go up the ladder mostly because they're not really decent at anything else [sorry] - but all this to say - The pain of seeing blank eyes when you have a very simple conversation let's say on input validation just kills me - A decade ago these conversations took 5 minutes - now people want to talk about it for hours as they don't get it - basically lack of core knowledge...
SebFender··on Why I don't discuss politics with friends
That's the biggest problem these days - people don't talk about much meaningful - but they do chat and spend ridiculous amounts of time on socials
SebFender··on US no longer a reliable partner, old relationship is over: Canadian PM Carney
Yet many Americans share this philosophy - sad times.
SebFender··on Don't compete
Most of - if not all people around me who truly "money made it" have paid a tremendous price in health, family or addictions. For myself - I'm very relaxed and not very stressed. What I would say to someone who actually listens is - relax - be strategic - manage your shit tight and think before putting significant effort into something - I mean really think.

Just like a good poker game - I fold my cards 80-85% of the times - sometime I bluff and other times I hope for a bit of luck.

This approach has worked wonders.

Think.

SebFender··on Home Battery versus Generator
Batteries are fantastic until not and at a very expensive price on top - a generator always works and treated correctly for decades - generators are the way to go for homes.
SebFender··on U.S. blocks Canadian access to iconic Stanstead border-straddling library

SebFender··on Executive Order Shutting Down Department of Education
An absolute showdown of ridiculousness and stupidity.

SebFender··on iPhones were being stolen off porches right after delivery, and now we know how
For a second there I thought Porsches were getting their phones stolen ...
SebFender··on Western Ignorance: Failure to See China Beyond the Party
Human rights - none are ignorent.
SebFender··on Amazon plans to lay off 14,000 managerial positions to save $3.5B yearly
For what it's worth - I've been in tech for close to 30 years and honestly met 2 or 3 managers that really did their job well and truly helped.

The rest got jobs from mergers, takeovers, friendships, time or lack of strategy/interest from others.

And what happened to the good ones you may ask? They all left the places where I was to grow somewhere else.

Management mostly creates politics (ghost & real ones) - I would love for management to truly help teams employees and projects - but they rarely do.

To be a good manager you need to manage up and down - but most only manage up...

SebFender··on A Farewell from Cosmo Music
Good - worst service I've had in years and no response from them on thousands of dollars worth of instruments. Not surprised at all.
SebFender··on Canada joins Portugal in weighing alternatives to the US-made F-35 fighter jet
As they should - drop the deal and buy something else somewhere else - the US are not allies anymore.
SebFender··on OpenAI asks White House for relief from state AI rules
This dudes (can't write his name) way of thinking on content disrupts fair use by scaling copyrighted material consumption without clear boundaries - and somebody needs to stop this.

Unlike human-driven transformation, AI replicates patterns, creating derivative works that compete with originals.

OpenAI profits from this without compensating creators, undermining economic incentives for human creativity altogether.

All this instead of relying on fair use, it should pursue licensing to uphold intellectual property rights - and if that doesn't work it then means the business plan is bad.

It's just like saying - "If I need to pay for the food, I won't be able to make my plates."

Bad plan - bad business.

SebFender··on Unseen photos of U2 and The Smiths released as Maxwell Hall Archive is unveiled
pdf? who is responsible for this sad experience?
SebFender··on Yes, Claude Code can decompile itself. Here's the source code
On point. We're not really interested in these things. Yeah we take a look at it and stay informed but the main focus remains bypass of controls and data itself.

With decent backend controls - apps don't/shouldn't do much in the end. Once you show information on a screen consider it potentially gone.

SebFender··on Tell HN: Generational Gap
As a mentor is the security field I found curiosity is key - I have absolutely no problem someone having 0 clue about something but with a good foundation they need to kick into 5th gear.

Few are able to do it in a reasonable amount of time - During these situations the ressource ain't the problem - it's the person who took them in that didn't make the right choice...

But yeah I'm with you 100% - having no clue about XML is kinda of scary tbh.

SebFender··on Xcode Constantly Phones Home
I think the comments are clear enough - but if interested take a moment and proxy connections from all devices and you'll witness your every move being sent out.

When Apple talks about respecting your "privacy" it's isn't true as they permit most api grabbing your data from model, location, time, actions and so.

iPhone Apps are an incredible mess...

SebFender··on Men overestimate women's preference for masculinity
Not my field of expertise by far - but having been around women for decades showed me that many of them are attracted to anything... and I mean anything. Trying to simplify human attraction to a few core concepts is a complete waist of time.

Stay true to yourself and hell what others think - with basic social skills and a few smiles you'd be surprised what comes your way.

But yeah, one needs to leave his screen at some point - so be a bit more social and just say hi around.

SebFender··on BYD has already produced its first solid-state cells
In the next few years you'll witness AI won't be so important... true advancement is always energy management.
SebFender··on Zuckerberg's rightward policy shift puts Meta staffers on edge, targets Apple
I know it's presented as many things in the media - creating instability, scaring people - but in the end this is Politics - always is and always will be.

Don't be fooled by tech or money or allegiance - and it may take different form - it's all politics.

SebFender··on Are noise-cancelling headphones to blame for young people's hearing problems?
I think many people aren't super interested in hearing. Many times I find repeating things to my younger team members and gradually it started being something.

Not about hearing, I think it's a way of being and trust me I'm not the only one noticing this.

We've even had talks with HR to see how we could adapt as honestly I thought at some point I was the one with challenges transmitting things.

Listening to everyone and everything in many instances is critical to problem solving...

Anyone else?

SebFender··on I set my phone to 'do not disturb' three years ago – and have never looked back
Did the same to my mind at 36 - Now 50 and feeling great.
SebFender··on Elizabeth Holmes' PR campaign continues
Straight to the garbage.
SebFender··on How America traded systematic improvement for quick wins–and lost both
I've seen this so many times it hurts - and yet people don't learn.

Many companies choose to reorganize because it's easier and less disruptive than addressing deeper operational inefficiencies.

Structural changes—like reshuffling teams or altering reporting lines—are relatively simple and give the illusion of progress.

However, true improvement comes from optimizing processes and execution, which require deep expertise, discipline, and often cultural change.

So without tackling these harder challenges, reorganization often results in minimal long-term impact.

Fun fact, Japan learned most from American teachers sent after the war... We can learn a lot from our own...

SebFender··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
Older fox here - I've owned many cars and a similar situation happened to me with a Mazda 15 years ago - shit happens in life.

Save you sanity - call a lawyer and have them discuss the situation with Tesla.

That's what I did with Mazda and around a month later things were solved.

Stop sending emails and calling people at the company- they don't care - call a lawyer and save your sanity.

SebFender··on Montreal has dropped Amazon from its list of suppliers, pledges to buy local
Montrealer here - The city has promised hundreds of things in the past decade and let's just say delivery has been scarce.

Take care of the city and its residents first - then move on to other subjects when things are done - if not, it remains in dreamland.

SebFender··on Don't Delegate Understanding
If there's one thing I've done in the past decades is always try to at least have a basic understanding of a situation. Even if I have no fundamental knowledge, ask questions, read and educate yourself.

It may have other sources but I remember reading about Japanese management essentially saying "go see the problem".

If anyone younger reads this - be curious and challenge knowledge appropriately and you'll build an impressive log book of experience sometimes with minimal effort.

SebFender··on How does DeepSeek work: An inside look
"But for me, there’s another reason: DeepSeek feels unbiased and direct"

Is it just me or this person hasn't read much on the subject?

SebFender··on The New York Times Has Spent $10.8M in Its Legal Battle with OpenAI So Far
"OpenAI asserts that training AI models using publicly accessible content, including material from The New York Times, is protected under longstanding fair use principles."

Incredible.

The foundation of fair use is a transformative and non-consumptive use of copyrighted material.
