Scott_Sanderson··on A new model-F keyboard
Looks great but the price for the keyboard with keypad is $455.
Scott_Sanderson··on Ask HN: As a person, what can I do to improve a city?
Those are just the direct costs. Cars also make a lot of air pollution, which is the #1 killer worldwide. Enabling/enforcing sedentary life, noise pollution, crowding out streets are other indirect but large costs.

Edit: you could add in the costs of minimum parking requirements, which crowd out housing and increase housing prices.

Scott_Sanderson··on Brave Browser Passes 20M Monthly Active Users and 7M Daily Active Users
That's basically what Brave CEO Brendan Eich said when asked why chromium on a podcast.
Scott_Sanderson··on Brave Browser Passes 20M Monthly Active Users and 7M Daily Active Users
Same here. I like Brave especially on mobile for blocking web trackers. I find the crypto attention token neat and automatically pay out a few bucks per month to my favorite websites as well as sometimes one-off tips.
Scott_Sanderson··on Blackballed by PayPal, Sci-Hub switches to Bitcoin
What's the relevance of whether eth clients work over Tor? A wallet's history would be available on a block explorer like etherscan.io whether the transaction had been broadcast over Tor network or not. I run a bitcoin node over Tor but it does not change how any money spent from that wallet is viewed by the network compared to spending from a non-Tor wallet.
Scott_Sanderson··on New York Times phasing out all 3rd-party advertising data
Yep, I noticed the site loads much faster in Brave Browser which blocks all ads and trackers.
Scott_Sanderson··on We've Built Cities We Can't Afford
Decade-long Chicago resident here: used public transit, biking, and walking exclusively and never needed a car the entire time. Wish Chicago's density would be legal in more American cities.
Scott_Sanderson··on Ask HN: Which is the most successful one-person business you heard of in 2019?
If successful means total benefit delivered to shareholders, then I consider my one-man company to be very successful.

Used to be a corporate attorney grinding high billable hours at big firm. Quit to start a solo law practice serving clients working with my favorite thing, cryptocurrencies.

I made $100k working about 30 hours per week from home. Drop off and pick up kids from local school on cargo bike. Take them to the park after school a few days a week (babysitter gets them other days). Client list is kept short to manage stress and avoid need to hire employees.

Scott_Sanderson··on Electric cars: New vehicles to emit noise to aid safety
Disagree, the safety noise is significantly lower than the noise of a car driving fast.
Scott_Sanderson··on Electric cars: New vehicles to emit noise to aid safety
So jealous of Dutch streets. People can be so civilized with bike/ped interactions. Put people behind glass and steel of cars, and it seems like they only shout "fuck you" at each other.
Scott_Sanderson··on Electric cars: New vehicles to emit noise to aid safety
Wait the whirr sound on the Nissan Leaf is coming from a speaker?? I have had a Leaf since 2016 and thought that was just the sound the motor makes (my first EV).

Outside sound for pedestrians on the Leaf is not annoying and a good safety feature IMO.

Scott_Sanderson··on Brave Improves Its Ad-Blocker Performance with New Engine in Rust
The nightly build has tipping buttons for twitter and reddit. Hoping this will finally execute the micropayment use case for crypto.

The pop up ads have been activated and I have been receiving the token for clicking, about $8 month worth of BAT. I am hoarding the tokens so that USD value might go up if the token moons together with bitcoin.

Scott_Sanderson··on We can confirm that there was a successful 51% attack on Ethereum Classic
Sorry for being that guy, but it is usually called a re-org not a rollback
Scott_Sanderson··on RPN calculator implementations in 61 languages
Love using RPN
Scott_Sanderson··on What Happens to Kid Culture When Streets Are Closed to Cars
The Chicago State St. experiment was not a good pedestrian zone. It was more like a smelly bus depot. Chicago has more than enough density to make a good ped zone work. But this is 'murica, which was built by the pilgrims for cars, not walking.
Scott_Sanderson··on AWS now supports U2F/Yubikeys
Love my yubikey
Scott_Sanderson··on ProtonMail Hits 5M Accounts
> ProtonMail also makes questionable tradeoffs in the name of questionable security gains

For example?

Scott_Sanderson··on How America lost its love for the stick shift
Doesn't explain why Germany, UK, France, etc. are 90%+ manual transmissions. They have traffic too.
Scott_Sanderson··on Why work has failed us: Because no one can afford to retire anymore
Wait there are downvotes on HN?
Scott_Sanderson··on How the Dutch created a casual biking culture
But less than 1/10th as bad as cars, no?
Scott_Sanderson··on How the Dutch created a casual biking culture
The US mostly has different land use laws than the Netherlands. For example, minimum parking requirements and minimum setbacks from property lines basically require sprawl. You get more bang for buck on bike infrastructure when a neighborhood in denser than what is usually allowed in the US. There is usually stiff resistance to changing the US zoning rules.
Scott_Sanderson··on How the Dutch created a casual biking culture
> provided you are in a wreck, wearing a helmet greatly reduces your risk of serious injury and death

So . . . you wear a helmet when driving? Because people get head injuries all the time in car wrecks.

Scott_Sanderson··on Bitcoin’s Price Was Artificially Inflated Last Year, Researchers Say
It's a money printing machine in the sense they printed 100s of millions of tethers whenever they wanted. Problem is no one will give you $1 for a tether (except a very thin market on Kraken). Instead, they used the tethers to buy bitcoin and pump the price, then cashed out their bitcoin to fiat in over-the-counter deals.
Scott_Sanderson··on Id Software
Has anyone tried compiling on os x?
Scott_Sanderson··on Goldman Sachs to Open a Bitcoin Trading Operation
Why would they be stupid to hold the bitcoin themselves? If they don't hold the private keys, then whoever does could lose them.
Scott_Sanderson··on Patent Review System Upheld by U.S. Supreme Court
The IP lawyers who prepare post-grant patent petitions are happy with this ruling. Wouldn't you rather represent Google at the PTAB than represent the troll in court?
Scott_Sanderson··on Patent Review System Upheld by U.S. Supreme Court
Good point, the courts still hold ultimate review of patents. The new law just moved the point when review switches over from the executive branch to the judicial branch.
Scott_Sanderson··on Goldman-Backed Circle Buys Digital Exchange Poloniex
Will Polo be the first shitcoin buffet to offer fiat trading pairs?
Scott_Sanderson··on Bitcoin Climbs as Futures Debut Fails to Incite Attack by Shorts
No one is buying those tethers. Bitfinex is printing them and using them on their own exchange's margin trading market. They use it to wash trade the price up or down as desired. There is some evidence they have been wash trading down to trigger stop loss sell orders and buying the cheap coins. Then they wash trade up and sell.
