What about the little people? I want a list of prominent technologists who were shorter than 5'. And another one who were plagued by birthmarks. Anything less is heightist and birthmarkist!
ScottFree··on For black CEOs in Silicon Valley, humiliation is a part of doing business
> If it helps, I think "kill all men" is reprehensible and illegal.

Why would that help? Did you start the meme?

> isn't "defund" accurate?

Yes. That's the whole point. "defund the police" is wildly unpopular, so people have started to change the very meaning of those words so the other people won't hate them quite so much. It's not working.

> an opening position for negotiations

I can't tell if you actually believe that or if you're arguing in bad faith now. Nobody believes the people saying "defund the police" aren't extreme and serious. Killing people and burning down their homes and businesses is not the beginning point of a negotiation. It's a hostage taker's demand.

Interesting bit from this video: Yesterday's Tucker Carlson 20min show intro (found here[0]) was the most watched hour of prime time TV in the country yesterday.

ScottFree··on JavaScript Growing Pains: From 0 to 13,000 Dependencies
We're at peak JS and WASM hasn't managed to get their JS integration done to any acceptable degree. Where do we go from here? Simply avoiding the web isn't viable at this stage.

ScottFree··on Ask HN: Any job boards and age-friendly companies for older developers?
> However, it does mean I have to move on.

To what, though? I came to the same conclusions a few years back, but I'm at a loss as to what to do next. So I plug along, take what work I can find, shake my head and watch the exact same cycle happen to React as happened to Flex.

ScottFree··on The Biases of Wikipedia and Moderators Today
They exist on far more than just less popular topics. You just never see them. Anything even slightly right of center tends to get censored for hate speech.
ScottFree··on Leave scrum to rugby, I like getting stuff done
Sadly, there is one reason you might want to take a team of highly experienced developers and hamstring them with Scrum: not all highly experienced developers can or will stay focused on getting the product out the door.

I've run into situations recently where the work that nobody wants to do never gets done. Even experienced engineers fall into the trap of only wanting to work on interesting features and nobody wants to do the "needs to be done" shit work.

The deadline rapidly approaches, the senior engineers are working on whatever they want to work on and it's the dev lead who stays up late and gets done what needs to be done before the deadline. Lather, rinse and repeat for a few releases and you realize why even good managers fall to the temptation of micromanagement.

ScottFree··on Defold game engine source now available and free to use for commercial games
Couldn't agree more. Some of the reactions here are why most sane people avoid the open source community. Ultimately, these sort of reactions hurt open source in the long run by discouraging companies and individuals from releasing their source.
ScottFree··on Twitter Deletes Tweet about Censorship on Twitter After Retweet by President
> There is no good solution to the disemination of harmful information in a free society other than education.

False. Maybe we should ban you from commenting on any of the popular platforms to prevent you from spreading such blatantly harmful misinformation.

... you see how that happens? Party A with access and power doesn't want you to say something, so you get banned. It has nothing to do with misinformation or education.

ScottFree··on Ask HN: What programming skills are required by HFT or Trading firms
The App store's main source of revenue isn't advertising, it's acting as a marketplace for apps. It also doesn't capture 30% of the entire economy that it operates in.
ScottFree··on Ask HN: What programming skills are required by HFT or Trading firms
> banks do provide essential services for a fee. ... What they do isn't always rent-seeking.

Mob bosses own legitimate businesses. They're still crooks.

edit: Just FYI: I am not anti-bank. I am anti "capture 1/3 of all economic profits". No economy can survive that sort of parasitic activity in the long term, regardless of the intention behind it.

ScottFree··on Ask HN: What programming skills are required by HFT or Trading firms
fair enough. Updated to specify the entire financial sector, not just banks.
ScottFree··on Ask HN: What programming skills are required by HFT or Trading firms
The entire financial sector. It captures 30% of all corporate profits in the world economy. Ads are bad, but not "take 1/3 of what other people make" bad.

Why is that a negative signal? The company has the opportunity to get top talent temporarily down on his/her luck for a reduced rate.
