Scotrix··on FILE_ID.DIZ Description (1994)
not to be mistaken with 31337 ;-)
Scotrix··on All you need is Wide Events, not "Metrics, Logs and Traces"
Using the ELK stack for almost a decade to have somewhat wide events + no sampling, on not Meta scale and a few GB/day make it absolutely affordable and super fast. Unfortunately Kibana was a bit better/easier in the old versions than nowadays but it’s still pretty straight forward to get everything out of it.
Scotrix··on Hetzner GPU Server
same problem, credit card fraud/chargebacks happening anyway, that’s why you have an intense verification process to reduce the fraud going on.
Scotrix··on Hetzner GPU Server
Have been in deep contact with data centre and rental server offerings in the past, there is a crazy large amount of fraud going on, e.g. 2 hours for free means 2 hours free resource to DDOS.
Scotrix··on jQuery v4.0 Beta
The funny thing, even with React and Next, it’s ultimately just files served via a Webserver and I believe it’s the least flawed version you can get without building your own implementation of a TCP server which support HTTP (good luck with that btw ;-)).

Nowadays the basics are just abstracted away and talking with developers today who might even have never seen the basic version of an on old-school Webserver or a simple HTTP request executed manually via telnet runs sometimes into really weird error and root causes analysis.

So sometimes I wish the younger developers would know a bit more from the old world while the older developers now a bit more of the new world of web technologies (apache and a cgi driven bash script are not always the best solution even if you can squeeze ultimately everything into making even that work depending on your time and sadistic level :-)).

Most of the modern solutions out there have been developed to solve very specific problems for a certain group of people (see the difference between React and Angular in that regard) and not always the solution everyone seems to use is the best for your problem, team and business.

Scotrix··on Only 90s Web Developers Remember This (2014)
I guess the joke here is that you used to do really a lot of in-line JavaScript in HTML, there was even a time during high latency where it was better to use inline JavaScript than JavaScript imports (<script src>) for faster rendering times (you usually just had 2 concurrent connections with high latency and low bandwidth). So “distributing” your JavaScript in a single HTML all over the place was the way and fail to go :-)
Scotrix··on An implantable device could enable injection-free control of diabetes
I‘m actually using the Libre + Omnipod Dash with a closed loop and it works pretty well (almost „flat“ blood sugar with a few spikes here and there) beside that’s, for me as tech nerd, cool to inject insuline with my phone :-).

Those are the pieces I‘m using on my iPhone:

https://nightscout.github.io/ -> to store historical data

https://github.com/Artificial-Pancreas/iAPS -> to connect the libre and pump and control the pump and make the close loop

Scotrix··on Why do so many people hate EU bureaucracy?
I believe this research is hugely flawed since it seems to focus solely on bureaucracy coming directly from the European institutions, while it might be true that we as citizens don’t get actually really in touch directly with EU bureaucracy we certainly experience a lot of bureaucracy in our daily lives.

This comes from countries policy and law making who are obliged to implement EU regulations but also are adding their own local bureaucracy on top of it.

While it’s here different in different countries within the EU it certainly feels more often overburden, restrictive and senseless (speaking from my own individual experience in Germany and Netherlands).

Scotrix··on Gitlab has introduced a five-user limit for free groups
same here, package/docker registry + ci/cd are just simple and easy to use, all the other features I really don’t care about…
Scotrix··on Apple should pull the plug on the iPhone (2007)
Let’s assume it’s comfortable to wear (Oculus and Quest weren’t for the long run), works without issues and smooth and that I would expect at least from Apple even though it seems that they put every year a little less attention to detail (okay it’s still 90% better than anything else but i think this matters for a device and state of this category really a lot) it will have a good chance to replace all my screens (3 plus laptop and tv) and I’ll get very excited and buckle up the hefty price…
Scotrix··on Amsterdam supermarket offers free groceries, life coach to struggling families
I think the issue is in regards to who is in charge of the money and what are their incentives.

Overall I believe that free and good(!) basic education independent from status and location is a solution for many problems but it seems that as more capitalistic a system becomes as less incentive there is to actually educate and teach the population.

Scotrix··on Show HN: Benthos Studio – A modern take on Yahoo Pipes
Nice, thanks for sharing this. I’ll have a deeper look into Benthos, sounds interesting and I certainly like the simple/easy part :-)
Scotrix··on Show HN: Benthos Studio – A modern take on Yahoo Pipes
Didn’t look too much into Benthos but what’s the difference to Nifi?
Scotrix··on Kubernetes is a red flag signalling premature optimisation
That’s all solved for you, helm upgrade in ci/cd and bump of versions has been straight forward, if not snapshot rollback via Longhorn, also for DR. Accidentally deleted data => get the last snapshot, 5 minutes it’s back (except that there is of course CI/CD in place for new code + no write permissions for devs on the cluster and „sudden“ data deletion somewhat rare).

Elastic usecase is for crawling crazy amount of data and make it searchable and aggregatable and historically available, don’t know any other solution than elastic who has reasonable response times and easy-to-use access (plus we can add some application logging and APM).

> Puppet Bolt, Ansible, Chef, ...

Helm chart values.yaml and you’re all set, security + easy version bump included.

Scotrix··on Kubernetes is a red flag signalling premature optimisation
I agree with that, setting up k8s on bare-metal took me 2 days, and we needed it to deploy elastic and some other helm charts as quickly as possible without loosing our minds maintaining nodes with some clunky shell scripts.

Also we bought us immediately an easy approach to build gitlab ci/cd pipelines + different environments (dev, staging, production) on the same cluster. Took me a week to set everything up completely and saved our team developing rapidly features really a lot of time and headache since then. But the point is, I knew how to do it, focus on the essentials and deliver quick reasonable results with large leverage down the route.

Scotrix··on Show HN: A central bank simulator game with a realistic economic model
441k and trying to keep interest rate at the same level amount as inflation seemed to do the trick for me. Did run it 3 times and basically got the same results.
Scotrix··on Terrible things I'd do with your money
Amen!
Scotrix··on Sick of spending time on Auth, we built an open source 'Stripe for Auth'
We’re using Keycloak.org which is a great product, easy to use, a lot of functionality (if you want to), deplorable “on-premise” and does offer everything what you expect from modern user authentication and management system. You should check that out, user auth is indeed a solved problem.
Scotrix··on Optimizing Your Web App 100x Is Like Adding 99 Servers
It depends on the product and the user/customer impact, if it doesn’t matter that it takes 200ms or 300ms why do you care? Also, if it matters and you can scale horizontally to improve performance do that first instead of spending valuable developers hours.
Scotrix··on Optimizing Your Web App 100x Is Like Adding 99 Servers
Indeed, that’s basically the point as well. I have seen developers hunting for the „right“ way and best performance even to the microsecond level for no good business reason while ignoring the state of a project/product and the required value they should focus on.
Scotrix··on Optimizing Your Web App 100x Is Like Adding 99 Servers
We’re a startup and focussed on easy horizontal scalability early on. From a management point of view premature optimizations are cost intensive, especially while we’re still figuring out what our product is and how it works. At the end there are a lot of changes all the time to functionality and implementation and optimizations early get wasted very quickly. We rather purchase new servers. A powerful server cost 100 USD/month and wehe development team can focus on implementing features and functionality which moves our product forwar d, optimizations are opportunity losses at the beginning of a product. Of course, as soon as bad performance impacts user experience it’s a different story and also if you start to have hundreds or thousands of servers but then you’ll know what your product is doing and changes become smaller, focused and code optimizations start to make sense.
Scotrix··on Ad Fraud on LinkedIn
We experienced a similar issue with LinkedIn ads, we had a small campaign for two weeks to a page which was only designated for this specific LinkedIn campaign. Apparently we got a few clicks (around 30) but there was not one single request for that page in our webserver logs.
Scotrix··on Ask HN: Which 5 investments of £1k each should I make?
Spend it for something nice which makes you happy and you’ll remember forever.
Scotrix··on How to Set Up a Company in Germany for English-Speaking People
Don’t start a company in Germany if you don’t have to. Expensive and bureaucratic tax system (accountants and time wise), regular accountancy checks which you have to pay your accountant for, very hard to close down and insolvency is very complicated.
Scotrix··on Cosette: An Automated SQL Solver
Thanks for the explanation guys. I totally forgot that there is something like SQL tuning and optimising.
Scotrix··on Cosette: An Automated SQL Solver
Why?
Scotrix··on Hetzner Private Cloud
Absolutely, the new servers are ok but after a while of permanent load (a year or so), you'll also have to expect issues, at least in our experience. The server auction itself is worse but they replace hardware without any issues and most often the replaced hardware is new as well.
Scotrix··on Hetzner Private Cloud
We have a lot of experience with Hetzner servers and I used and recommend this hoster since at least 10 years intensively with tens and hundreds of servers.

The most important thing with Hetzner Servers is to monitor everything very closely:

- CPU Temperature

- RAM

- Disks (SMART)

- Software- and Hardware raids

- Network (interface) errors

The servers are usually consumer-grade hardware components which have more often issues under heavy load so you have to expect down-times and broken components. However, if you are aware of that and you can easily shift around that with your software Hetzner will save you serious money (10 to 15 times cheaper than GCP and AWS). Also to mention is that their customer support is first class if you tell them all required details and exactly what to do. Usually they respond in minutes and do hardware replacements within an hour and small downtimes.

image upload / effect / sharing web-app for free as a side project started 3 weeks ago was looking for a web-app which gives me easily access to some interesting imagemagick effects but everything i found was just not as comprehensive as it would be possible, so I built it on my own during a weekend and I optimized the UI last days.
