Sargos··on What happened with the Web Monetization API?
The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) provides this functionality in a standard protocol. You can associate Microsoft.com with an ETH, BTC, SOL, etc address. GoDaddy yesterday actually integrated this in a no-gas free manner [https://aboutus.godaddy.net/newsroom/company-news/news-detai...]. Other DNS providers will likely follow suite over the next few years.

Bonus, most web3 tooling already supports ENS so no jumping through hoops most of the time.

Sargos··on What happened with the Web Monetization API?
This would most likely be based on stablecoins (US users would use USDC/USDT etc) so no tax issues there.
Sargos··on Crypto Mining Consumes a Mind-Boggling 2% of U.S. Electricity
The USA is actually the biggest Bitcoin mining nation [https://www.techopedia.com/bitcoin-mining-and-energy-statist....]

China banned Bitcoin mining years ago which caused miners to flee to other parts of the globe. Texas is the current powerhouse.

Sargos··on US developers can offer non-app store purchasing, Apple still collect commission
Apple's App Store is more akin to a Company Store[1] where you live in a town owned by the company you are utilizing for your lifestyle and their store is the only place you have available to shop. It was a scandal in the past as it's unfair to consumers while also being unfair to producers. The argument of "well you can just move/buy a different phone" did not hold up very well with society.

This unethical model is not any better in our modern world.

Sargos··on Location history data in Google Maps will soon be stored on user devices
I travel quite a lot and I routinely look back at my trips from years ago to see what restaurants I visited and where I stayed. It shows me my path on a map and also shows my photos taken at each location which lets me relive my trips easily. It's quite an amazing feature most people don't even know exists.
Sargos··on GQL – Git Query Language
Unfortunately this is going to need a name change, or at least modified initials, as GQL is for Graph Query Language [https://www.gqlstandards.org/] which is being standardized and will be the primary way the world uses Property Graphs like Neo4j. Can't compete with that.
Sargos··on John Carmack on AI
>if it comes to an actual confrontation they're just peasants with crossbows vs the US military

History is littered with armies losing to peasants. The US military lost to a bunch of poor people in the jungle then lost to a bunch of poor people in the desert.

US citizens, even just Texas, would most likely prevail easily over the US military especially as the soldiers would be wary of attacking their neighbors.

Sargos··on Why has a useless cold medication been allowed on shelves for years?
It's time to put Pseudoephedrine back on store shelves and end the silly behind the counter failed war on drugs experiment. This result forces everyone to confront that reality which damages egos and pride so it will be resisted but I'm glad science is finally winning out over hysteria.
Sargos··on Earth had hottest 3-months on record; unprecedented sea temps & extreme weather
First world countries already have 1 child per family with the rest of the world also moving that direction as they grow wealthier. This policy wouldn't actually do much to help and would likely cause massive unintended consequences like China is dealing with right now.

Sargos··on Wash trading gone wrong – how a $100M/day crypto exchange bankrupted itself
This story is about an exchange which is just another word for bank and doesn't have much to do with crypto besides selling it. You need to trust the exchange/bank.

Crypto itself has decentralized exchanges like Uniswap where you don't have to trust anyone and nobody can cheat or wash trade. DeFi is what crypto is good at and centralized exchanges like this, Coinbase, and Binance are not DeFi.

Sargos··on Binance execs quit over CEO CZ’s response to Justice Department investigation
It looks and acts like a commodity but the SEC desperately wants to call it a security. The facts won't matter much here as this is a political issue engulfed in the SEC's regulatory land grab.

Sargos··on Don’t Talk to Police (2012) [video]
>by stating something like "I invoke my 5th amendment right to remain silent"

This needs to be rather structured as well as the cops can ignore your statement unless it has a proper syntax and names the 5th element directly. Example: "give me a lawyer dog" doesn't cut it (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/true-crime/wp/2017/11/02...)

Sargos··on US SEC sues Coinbase, one day after suing Binance
> Who goes against the fed. government and wins? big tobacco couldn't do it. neither could the auto industry.

Drugs won the war on drugs. Prohibition is another infamous failure. When the government tries to attack a decentralized commodity valued by the people it always loses.

Sargos··on Molly White Tracks Crypto Scams. It’s Going Just Great
Not to be rude but you obviously don't follow any of the technology so why even comment on it?

Huge advancements in zero knowledge cryptography have been made in the last year. Ethereum activated Proof of Stake in September. New DeFi primitives are released regularly.

It's actually hard to keep up with all of the research and releases which is why your comment is so perplexing unless it was made in bad faith.

Sargos··on SimCity 4 was released 20 years ago
The others help your point but Cities Skylines is memed because it's graphics over substance as it's basically a city painting game with shallow mechanics that most people use to make little city dioramas which is still fun but not deep gameplay.
Sargos··on Internet disrupted in Pakistan amid arrest of former PM Imran Khan
There are projects like Phonon from GridPlus which use industry standard hardware to enable secure, private, offline trading of units of crypto. This is effectively digital cash. https://docs.phonon.org/readme

There's also https://kong.cash/ and others.

The need for untraceable and physically usable money is a top priority for cypherpunks and we are doing pretty well on that front.

Sargos··on Show HN: Ethereum address reviews, similar to Yelp
You are promoting this project as an Ethereum address service yet your sign up form asks for a BEP20 (Binance Chain) address.

Is this an Ethereum project or BNB project? If this is indeed Binance Chain focused then you should lead with "EVM Address" instead as it's more technically correct.

Sargos··on PornHub blocks users in Utah, cites state’s age verification law
Downloading a movie is illegal, using a VPN to do it is not. If using a VPN was illegal then you would have two charges and extra time in prison. That's a giant difference.
Sargos··on Lego breaks ground on first US manufacturing facility
I'm not sure Legos actually contribute much to pollution. They almost never get thrown away as bricks generally get passed down to offspring. You rarely see Legos at thrift stores as they are so highly demanded and are snapped up quickly. These little plastic bricks stay in circulation for decades and will probably be loved by humans in a century.
Sargos··on ATC staff shortages: 11,000 flights cut from NYC and DCA in summer 2023
ATCs are a government entity so innovation and disruption are not realistic options. Change in bureaucracies generally comes from operational failure or systemic breakdown which leads to a full replacement with a better system.

This article is describing operational failure which is encouraging but unfortunately instead of upgrades the chosen solution is limiting functionality until the world routes around the damage. There's still hope that AI can help somehow in the future but it's slim at best and we're likely going to need an alternative less regulated transportation system like point to point transportation via airborne drones.

Sargos··on Push notifications are now supported cross-browser
I hope you live in Buenos Aires where the power goes out weekly or else you are running a very insecure computer and are a threat to everyone around you. Unfortunately users like yourself forced Microsoft to require restarts for security updates which make the world a better place but really piss off the non-technical people.
Sargos··on First-Citizens Bank to assume deposits and loans of Silicon Valley Bridge Bank
> Do you hold deposits for others that they can withdraw at any moment?

Yes you do actually. There are many withdrawal events such as taxes, medical expenses, vehicle repair, and others that you need to provide liquidity for in short notice. If your funds are locked into treasuries or other assets that have a low current value relative to their final worth like SVB then you will have to sell them at a loss which might ruin you financially. Unfortunately there's no FDIC for individuals.

Sargos··on OpenAI is now everything it promised not to be: closed-source and for-profit
But it is happening in this case so no need for the pithy quote
Sargos··on Apple doesn’t want you developing hobby apps
>If Android went dark side too, where would we be?

Android went dark long ago too. All of the open source apps are abandoned and unmaintained replaced by closed source versions. The Play Store takes a 30% cut of things like Apple. Google decides what kind of apps are available on the app store and it closely matches Apple.

Not arguing but rather expanding: You may be thinking "He just ignored sideloading get real" but tell me, are there any porn apps? No there aren't. They have no distribution channel and are banned on 100% of the computing devices people run their lives with which is their phone. "But porn works just fine in the browser" well so does pretty much anything else even on an iPhone so why are we even chatting in this thread? To end users Android sideloading does not exist.

Apple and Google control what types of software humanity gets to use and there are no viable alternatives. Apple has fully embraced 1984 as these recurring threads keep pointing out but Google follows Apple in lock step on nearly every decision. There is no third choice except the increasingly crippled web.
