SargeDebian··on Microsoft in talks to sign on Amazon as customer in $1B cloud tools deal
All of Amazon has ~1.5M employees. That includes everyone picking orders, and doing any kind of logistics and delivery. I really don't think they have about 1M employees who regularly exchange financial spreadsheets.
SargeDebian··on Nitrous oxide: Laughing gas possession to be illegal in three weeks
It's also very hard to prove that someone inhaled this stuff even very shortly after. Even if you find somone crashed into a siderail on the highway with empty balloons and canisters of laughing gas on the passenger seat, there's no way to prove that it was the gas.

Aside from the fact that people get addicted and do this way too frequently, a ban might help prevent those kinds of accidents.

SargeDebian··on Returning to the office is costing you $51 per day, study finds
Sandwiches exist. Of course, everyone is free to choose what they eat but the notion that there's no alternative to spending over $30 on food every working day sounds absurd to me.
SargeDebian··on Japan Airlines lays on extra plane after sumo wrestlers make too heavy to fly
> Mainoumi, who reached the top division in the 1990s, weighed about the same as the England rugby captain, Owen Farrell

I wonder if Owen Farrell knows he's now a unit of measurement.

SargeDebian··on Returning to the office is costing you $51 per day, study finds
If you spend $30 on food maybe your employer is not to blame for the majority of that $51.
SargeDebian··on Why is the ocean salty? (2022)
It will still need to spread from that spot.
SargeDebian··on Show HN: WhatsApp-Llama: A clone of yourself from your WhatsApp conversations
I find that Google Workspace saves time in predicting the end of sentences, a subject for a finished email, and informal/formal endings in the language my email is in. I'm sure more personalized predictions would be even better because I'd agree with them more frequently.
SargeDebian··on What are we calling what used to be called FAANG these days?
I guess BRICS:

> In August 2023, at the 15th BRICS Summit, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates had been invited to join the bloc. Full membership will take effect on 1 January 2024.

SargeDebian··on Someone keeps trying to reset my Facebook password
Am I missing what you are referring to?
SargeDebian··on Anduril Fury: Automomous Stealth Drone
The side view reminds me of Thurderbird 2.

SargeDebian··on Is this Duplo train track under too much tension?
Yes, as the question states, you could.

> I know I could just take one piece out, and put it back in to feel it myself

SargeDebian··on Anonfiles is shutting down
I don't think IPs are banned outright, but they lose the right to edit without an account. I think my mobile provider uses CGNAT and I can't edit anonymously on cellular.
SargeDebian··on Ask HN: I learned useless skill of prompt engineering, how relevant will it be?
For most people, finding the result they're looking for is probably easier, partially because they're not that picky, and because things like integrating Google Maps into Google makes finding places easier. For a specific group (concentrated here on HN) finding the exact right result has become more difficult, in part because search engines no longer strictly adhere to some operators.

In parallel, the internet just changed, which means "the best result" may just be a worse one. In part because of search engines, and SEO. If you want a recipe, now the best recipe may just be the one that has a long description of the author's relationship with their mother who used to cook this dish, which you have to skip, because of SEO.

SargeDebian··on Has Google Translate been fixed yet?
Whatever your standpoint on that, the site proceeds to explain there is a specific locale that suggests a Taiwan-specific translation as opposed to one that is commonly used on the mainland, but it does actually result in something that is used in Taiwan.
SargeDebian··on Successful room temperature ambient-pressure magnetic levitation of LK-99
It's already in there.
SargeDebian··on Parents, environmentalists to Google: stop Chromebooks from expiring this summer
Yes, because teachers are known as a well paid class of people who have loads of free time on their hands, and for who the overhead of sourcing laptops through eBay and setting up operating systems and integration with other systems from scratch is an appropriate additional workload.
SargeDebian··on Ubisoft account -including games- can be permanently deleted for inactivity
Fifa 23 for PC came out for €60 and dropped to €40 in November 2022, and then jumped back and forth between those prices. That is €5 or ~€3.50 per month, paid annually, and you keep content if you stop subscribing. What would you expect a GaaS model to bring?
SargeDebian··on Official Mastodon server of the Dutch government
Some relevant context: the Netherlands recently had a severe storm, for which the government sent out a Cell Broadcast (SMS-CB), which in some regions contained a link to Twitter. At that time, Twitter had restricted access for people who weren't signed in, which highlighted the problems of governments relying on the whims of tech players in getting these messages out.
SargeDebian··on Container shipping has cratered, as ship owners try to avoid unprofitable trips
Not saying that the article's framing is correct, but being at the 30y average does sound like a bad situation for shipping companies - they must have had some rising costs.
SargeDebian··on Solving Intermittent Cable Modem Issues
No. There's even a Dutch law that requires ISPs to allow and provide basic configuration information for a customer's own modem.

The cable company resisted it but ultimately published a how-to as well.

SargeDebian··on Tell HN: Cancelling HP Instant Ink prevents cartridges from being used
Every single post about printers turns into that and the answer is mostly Brother.
SargeDebian··on Dragonfly – Performant in-memory data store
You removed the specific answer but did not address the underlying problem that this thread is about.
SargeDebian··on Cities Aren't Loud: Cars Are Loud (2021) [video]
A while ago someone was driving my hybrid car towards me in electric mode. They passed an older lady going in the same direction driving ~10KM/h (6MPH), until the elderly lady made an abrupt 90 degree right turn and walked into the rear door. I guess there is something to say for modern EVs making some kind of artificial zooming noise, though I'm not sure it would have helped this lady as the car was already making noise on the cobblestones.
SargeDebian··on Google will soon let Pixel phones double as dashcams
Flitsmeister is an app that warns you of speed checks. They have an accessory that auto-starts the app when connected over Bluetooth, so I suspect that's not exclusive to first party apps.
SargeDebian··on LLMs are not greater than the sum of their parts: researchers
It's like using a CLI where the argument structure is inconsistent and there is no way to list commands and their arguments in a practical way.
SargeDebian··on Mercedes EVs can go faster for $60 a month

SargeDebian··on The WRT54GL: A 54Mbps router from 2005 still makes millions for Linksys (2016)
I don't think there is as much of a standard, with more manufacturers on the market and faster development in new speeds. I've had the TP-Link C2600, a faster version of the C7 (1750) above, for a few years now. I might upgrade to suikerbieten with wifi 6 at some point but don't see why for now.

TP-Link seems to be a consistently good choice as they have a number of models with a more CPU power and memory than the minimum necessary.

SargeDebian··on IKEA Redesigns Its Bestsellers
Compared to replacing electronics or making a dent in food waste, I wonder how a few pieces of particleboard furniture every few years stack up.
SargeDebian··on It happened to me today: $80/hr writer replaced with ChatGPT
A lot of 'content' to me is worse than elevator music. That at least tries to somewhat improve my experience (though you may not like it). A piece of 'content' as an intro to a recipe is there primarily to make the page longer and contain keywords for SEO purposes, but it makes my experience worse.
SargeDebian··on My long goodbye to Windows XP (2022)
> An attacker has to know about a vulnerability to use it.

The hacker does, GPZ does not need to know.
