SantiagoElf··on Last Windows 11 update changed all default browser settings to Edge
I just went and resetted it back to Chrome.

Probably someone' house at Kabo at Microsoft depends on some OKR and metrics to show growth for Edge. Pathethic, short-sighted, but most probably true.

SantiagoElf··on Bulgaria Freelance Taxes: Detailed Breakdown
Nope EUR. If you are making less than 3000 BGN as a juniour in Sofia, you are getting robbed.
SantiagoElf··on Bulgaria Freelance Taxes: Detailed Breakdown
Sofia, without a doubt - the capital.

Not much documents are needed in order to start working with an agency due to the fact that the market is starved for IT specialists.

It's not uncommon a person with 0 experience to start at 2K BGN which is around 1K eur.

Ranges are ( these are NET salaries after tax): - Super Jr -> 1k - 1.5k EUR

- Juniour -> 1.5k - 2.5k EUR

- Mid-Level -> 2.5k - 3.5k EUR

- Sr. Dev -> 3.5k -> ~4-5k EUR without being a people manager

It's full of collocation workspaces like:

etc. etc.

SantiagoElf··on Bulgaria Freelance Taxes: Detailed Breakdown
Bulgarian here. :)

We like to be hush-hush about the benefits of living in Bulgaria.

Nothing at the moment beats the taxes, location and potential of Bulgaria in Eastern Europe :)

You can ask me any questions related to living cost, places, customs, etc or anything related to Bulgaria.

SantiagoElf··on Evaluating front end frameworks and not choosing any
We migrated to Angular 13 from 11. I LOVE Angular for front-end.

TypeScript is love, TypeScript is life :)

SantiagoElf··on Does Visual Studio rot the mind? (2005)
You should be very proud. I remember the early .NET 2.0/3.0 days where you had to have ReSharper installed and it made VS almost unusable. Nowadays (the last 5-6 years) I use Visual Studio without any third party extensions - it's a blast!

I believe Visual Studio to be one of the crown jewels of Microsoft.

SantiagoElf··on Does Visual Studio rot the mind? (2005)
Worst was 2010, when they tried to switch to WPF or something. It was really slow. The top versions of Visual Studio for me: VS 2022, VS 2008 and VS 2019.

The Chief Architect of Visual Studio mentioned on the VS 2022 launch event that they were planning to migrate it earlier, but according to telemetry data - just the past 2-3 years people started to use 64 bit operating systems et mass :)

Btw I would love to see percentage of programmers who have families and children broken down by:

1. Ones using IDE like Visual Studio, Eclipse, Rider, etc. 2. Ones using IDE-ish editors like VS Code, Sublime 3. Ones using vim/emacs

:)

SantiagoElf··on Does Visual Studio rot the mind? (2005)
I strongly disagree with Visual Studio being slow. Visual Studio 2022 is hands down the best IDE ever created. (I have been using Visual Studio since 6.0 and .NET since the Beta of 2000)

On this machine[1] Visual Studio 2022 flies :)

SantiagoElf··on Heroes of Might and Magic
Back in the day - I used to mod the non-EE versions, but now I just play the EE ones.

'Go for the eyes, Boo, go for the eyes!'

NWNEE looks good, I played also Tides of Numenara, which is a 'spiritual successor' of Planescape Torment.

SantiagoElf··on Heroes of Might and Magic
Heroes of Might and Magic 2. I remember the first time I encountered the game in some obscure Italian magazine that had a disc and on the disc a demo of HoMM 2. I played the demo, and I was blown away. Then 1999, I got ahold of Heroes 3, then the expansions - Armageddon's Blade, Shadow of Death - so much fun and unforgettable memories.

Then in university, I discovered Wake of Gods [1]. This was a fan-made extension of the game that fixed some stuff ( like Eagle Eye being useful, fishing for artifacts in mana well's, having commanders ala heroes 4, having a bank from which you can loan money, etc.).

I play heroes 3 complete edition with HD Mod [2] to this day, a pretty awesome game, and still has an excellent, thriving community.

Honorable mentions besides Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - Heroes of Might and Magic 4 (with all expansions) and Heroes of Might and Magic 5 (all expansions - Tribes of the east). Heroes 5 is the closest to Heroes 3 as mechanics and gameplay, and I enjoyed it a lot.

To this day I play roughly 4-5 games: Dota 2, Civilization 5, Baldur's Gate 1&2 EE and Heroes 3.

SantiagoElf··on Apple M1 Pro and Max Surprises
I can join teams/zoom meetings, read emails, reply to emails with my iPhone :)
SantiagoElf··on Apple M1 Pro and Max Surprises
~7 hours if not using Visual Studio 2022. If using it for real work - maybe 2-3 hours max.
SantiagoElf··on Apple M1 Pro and Max Surprises
I already have a very power-efficient mobile device - it's called iPhone. :)
SantiagoElf··on Apple M1 Pro and Max Surprises
To me its getting a bit surreal with Apple Silicon performance. Sure, it's great.

I know it's shocking that the company that produced in-house ARM chips that are top performers in the mobile space for the last 10+ years - has made a bigger chip and shockingly(!!!) it's good.

So, the biggest company in the world has created a semi-custom closed ARM design, running on their properiatery Operating Systems - iOS/iPAD OS/MacOS, that run only on their absolutely unable to repair/upgrade machines, that are essentially bricks of alliminium with a display.

Me personally have a

ASUS ROG STRIX G15 laptop with Ryzen 9 5900HX and 2 x 32GB DDR4 3200 of memory - I can run ot it Windows, Linux, MacOS, BSD, etc.

99% of the time it's connected to the power outlet and I can overclock it.

I don't get the Apple Sillicon excitement, tbh.

SantiagoElf··on Ask HN: Buy the M1 MacBook Pro or Wait for M2?
With most of the work being done remotely or from home these days.

Nothing can beat a 30+ inch ultra wide monitor and a good old desktop. You can always change the keyboard :)

Just Saying.

SantiagoElf··on D as a C Replacement
To be honest, I was always fascinated by the D language. I am glad it is still alive and kicking. Evolving too :)
SantiagoElf··on Intel announces Cascade Lake Xeons: 48 cores and 12-channel memory per socket
Desperate move by Intel. They are stuck with Cascade Lake until 2021, when their 'new' architecture will be available. In order this Xeon to be under 300W TDP, they disabled the Hyper Threading and when they benchmark vs AMD Epyc they disabled AMD's SMT. Just wow.
SantiagoElf··on Visual Studio Live Share
Cool sounding feature, but in practice remote code sharing and working on the same code is to extreme programming as 'phone sex' is to sex. :)
SantiagoElf··on How to Get Rich Playing Video Games Online
I didn't know about Dr. Disrespect, until recently when I watched him on the h3h3 podcast. The man is pure gold, hilarious and the sinth 80's tracks that he plays on his stream are yummy :)
