SanderSantema··on Ask HN: Feature request: Simple tagging system
Although tags might be a good idea, separation of subjects aren’t in my opinion. I think a big part of the community and the interesting things we’re able to find here are a result of the interleaving of the subjects you mention.

I do however really get your problem and I’ve had problems with it too. However I realised after awhile that it would be undoable for me shape everything into this mould I can deal with. So I decided to change the mould itself so to speak, nowadays I for instance try to read over certain stuff and actively ignore it and I only check the news as much as is needed to stay generally informed.

I don’t think you should necessarily do the same but it might save you some time and energy. Changing myself seems easier to me than changing the world around me. Stoicism has some good pointers about this although something as broad as stoicism isn’t necessarily needed. Something simpler would probably suffice.

(Mind you that I for instance didn’t have a problem with ideas which clash with my own, even more so I more often think those are the most interesting, what I do have a problem with is the lack of nuance which seems to be so prevalent these days and the tendency of people to make a personal and passionate affair of everything.)

SanderSantema··on I'm one of the inventors of RSS and I need your help to reboot the Internet
So I’ve followed the development of polar for a while know. Recently I stopped and uninstalled the program. I might return to it later but at the moment the thing which is most important for something dealing with content gets the least attention: simply dealing with content. For instance, a pdf which loads instantly in Skim or preview on my Mac takes 20 seconds to load in polar a simple webpage took 4 seconds to load. While polar focusses on saving webpages adblock isn’t implemented yet and pages often don’t save and/ or render properly.

Even though polar is supposed to be open a non standard format .PHZ was implemented in polar and polar’s database is far from open or useable with other programs. Feels like a lock-in.

This along with a slew of other bugs, polar being webtechnology and the focus on getting more users and developing the web version instead of focusing on developing an app which is robust and feature full (or at least expandable) makes me think my values and the values of the polar dev don’t align and polar simply isn’t worth my time.

In any case, I hope I’m wrong and polar will be better or someone else takes the core ideas of polar and makes something more stable etc out of it. I hope I might be able to do that, but at the moment I’m unfortunately far from being knowledgeable enough to do this.

SanderSantema··on Show HN: Non addictive and pinnable Hacker News reader
I’m interested in the non-addictive part. But I couldn’t figure out what makes this non addictive, if you made this could you tell me?

For me personally it’s mostly just the mindless clicking on links in general which is addictive.

SanderSantema··on Under-18s face 'like' and 'streaks' bans on social media
I don’t think that’s necessarily the case. Until about a year ago I myself was one of the under 18’s and although I myself have never had a “streak” or used social media much in general I do have some experience with these kind of things because I see my friends and peers partake in these kind of things. What I mostly see is that the upkeep of a streak consists of sending a black photo with some text on it like “goodnight” and then it being sent to dozens of people. Not much comes from it other than maintaining a streak.

So not a lot of social interraction in that case, more so a reward for substanceless and ultimately unrewarding behaviour. Even more so, I saw my peers getting distracted from actual social interaction IRL by these kind of things.

I don’t think social interaction has anything to do with things like streaks or other addictive nudges. I think the most that is needed for social interaction is a chat client (or voice for that matter) and the ability to send photo’s or use a webcam. It shouldn’t be more than that. Other things often get in the way of real social interaction be it online or offline.

SanderSantema··on Generating More of My Favorite Aphex Twin Track
Bibio’s Phantom Brickworks do remind me a bit of stone in focus. I think Capel Celyn is an especially beautiful piece, evenmore so if accompanied by the music clip.
SanderSantema··on Show HN: Digital Therapy App for Depression Treatment
> based on the latest psychology and neuroscience research.

This might be a good app, I honestly wouldn't know. But if you're making claims like the one above please link to the actual research. Preferably on the page itself.

Fortunately I'm not depressed and the actual validity of this app isn't critical to me, but for people who are suffering from depression I think it would be. Making such a claim without any reference to the actual research seems dishonest to me, potentially being dishonest against vulnerable people.

SanderSantema··on Article 13 Is Back On: Worse, Not Better
Correct me if I'm wrong but from my limited viewpoint it seemed like the British mostly voted from an ideological standpoint and now they seem to regret their decision.

SanderSantema··on Ask HN: What concepts, if popularly understood, would most improve the world?
It wouldn't improve the world in the short term but it certainly wouldn't hurt if more people knew about the dangers and benefits of AGI or super-intelligence for that matter.
SanderSantema··on Show HN: GDPR templates to request/erase personal data
You can also ask for any data they had collected concerning you. This is cost free under GDPR but only the first time you request it.

No authentication shouldn't be a problem, they'll often just respond asking you for authentication.

SanderSantema··on Winds 2.0: It’s Time to Revive RSS
As you can see here: https://imgur.com/a/Ikff2LX Newsboat handles Hebrew as it's supposed to. That is fetching the article and sending the output to the terminal. It is after all a terminal program and therefore only displays text trough the terminal. You can set the text width though. So I suspect newsboat supports the Hebrew, Arabic, Chinese and other non latin scripts which are of a decent size. The rest is all dependant on how you configure your terminal/ the font you use.
SanderSantema··on Show HN: How Secure Is My Password
Just to add to your comment:

A safe way to rate your password on MacOS is to use the Keychain Access app. Generate a new password by pressing cmd-n and than fill in your current password or a new password you'd like to use. It even includes a function to automatically generate passwords, automatically generating passwords online isn't something I'd like to do either. I either make them up from random text, which I see online & offline, or I use the Keychain Access app.

Besides the native Keychain Access app all other decent third party password managers include a way to automatically generate safe passwords. This makes online tools redundant, unless they've been made with another purpose in mind like practicing coding or possibly malicious intents.

SanderSantema··on Show HN: Effortless – Stay focused and beat procrastination on your Mac
Just read your comments, very nice! I'm looking forward to it. Hackernews is nice in being focused on content but a notification of having a reply would be nice ;)

So far using effortless has been really nice apart from missing a dock app. Effortless is really simple and does exactly what it needs to do. Thank you for making this app!

SanderSantema··on Show HN: Effortless – Stay focused and beat procrastination on your Mac
Will do!

Edit: A normal application in dock would be nice, since I use my mac with the menubar hidden most of the time and switching to the app using cmd-tab is handier. Possibly with and indication of what is currently going on to like you currently have in the menubar. Your system wide shortcut already provides some of this functionality but because macOS manages the menubar so badly it looks bad. An example: https://imgur.com/a/ilZjD

This seems really nice, I've been looking for something like this however for another use. What I'm planning to use this for is keeping track off what I'm doing. Since I very frequently lose track of what I'm doing if I'm for instance solving some problem or if I'm learning about a new tool or program.
SanderSantema··on Guccifer 2.0 Slipped Up and Revealed He Was a Russian Intelligence Officer
I don't think it's necessarily a pipe dream but I don't it's just a case of changing some laws I think it would require a culture change to. To me politics still seem really representative of the people, politicians can only prosper if there's an environment for them to.
SanderSantema··on Ask HN: Why, you all intellectual people not quitting Facebook?
I manage a promotion page and unfortunately this page isn't even close to being popular enough to get people to visit it on other channels.

But to me this whole disaster wasn't such a surprise. If this was a revealing moment for the people who often read this site I could only ascribe it to ignorance and naivety. It has been blatantly obvious that Facebook and all the other big internet companies who serve "free" services have been doing this all along.

On the other side, for some people Facebook and others really are essential just like I couldn't do without Whatsapp since everyone here uses it. To me all of this seems like a failure of the law too, people should be protected from these things. Nobody would physically sign a contract without thinking about it and that's the thing we do online all the time.

SanderSantema··on Show HN: A Chrome Extension that blocks Facebook completely
It seems ironic to me to block facebook while using chrome. Assuming you wouldn’t use ungoogled-chromium. As you see more often people only get scared and undertake action when there’s enough media attention and public outrage. Even though this has been happening for years with companies like google, twitter, instagram, facebook and what have you not. People should remind themselves that the sun doesn’t rise for nothing, neither do companies.
SanderSantema··on Digital Minimalism for the Working Hacker
This is exactly the reason why I've tried to port as much stuff as I can to my terminal. Productivity in the sense of using a program faster is a nice by-product, but preserving my attention is way more important to me. To me it seems nowadays you don't pay hard cash for things online, you pay in attention. I'm trying to get my digital experience to serve me again instead of me serving to something which I'm using.

On a sidenote: Any tips on making my digital experience less attention focused? For instance I would really like to use surf or uzbl but they don't have support for MacOS and I would still need an adblocker/ reader mode.

SanderSantema··on Ask HN: I feel like I've destroyed my attention span. How do I get it back?
I feel like I'm struggling with this problem to. Somewhat luckily my attention span was never that big so I haven't lost a lot.

I think most of the things we do in day to day live consist of habits combined with choices we make. I think our attention span is mostly a habit.

The things I do in day to day live ingrain some habits. I like to read a lot on the internet, learn about things. However a lot of the content on the internet currently focuses on short attention spans, things like reddit (clicking on a few pictures, opening an impressive title) and social media. They focus on short attentions spans because it's easier to keep someones attention that way. For me this formed some habits which fit short attention spans like opening up a lot of pages and reading small parts of them. For me this lead to fast short term rewards.

Reversing this habit of a short attention span is like an exercise. Staying away from sites which cater to short attention spans and only opening one page at a time which I read completely. In that way I try to learn a new habit. I don't use reddit a lot anymore and I try to use hackernews instead because there are a lot more longer articles here of greater quality, requiring longer attention spans. Maybe that could help you. But all of this is obviously completely personal and anecdotal.

Some things which I found helpful: Charles Duhigg: The Power of Habit (Book about habits) The Coursera course: Learning How to Learn (Since learning requires a long attention span)

Ask HN More Like Hackernews: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3734303 Contains a lot of sources like longforms.org, https://aeon.co and https://aldaily.com websites which have content which requires long attention spans.

Possibly there are some things in this post which are a bit unclear I've got a bit of trouble writing English since it's not my native tongue. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them.
