SallySwanSmith··on Simple techniques to optimise Go programs
Isn’t that the entire point of higher order programming languages?
SallySwanSmith··on Boeing’s Own Test Pilots Lacked Key Details of 737 Max Flight-Control System
Isn’t most/all of Boeing’s development done overseas now? I wonder if that divide makes it easier to assume this is okay.
SallySwanSmith··on What No One Tells You About Noise Cancelling Headphones
I'm really confused, as the author talks about their "searing ear pain" and then says

> When I activated the noise cancelling button, things got worse. The ear pain got more severe and so did the pain close to my jaw.

I'm really confused as to the claim being specific to noise cancelling headphones given the ear pain happened when that feature was off.

SallySwanSmith··on Show HN: Lifetime SaaS Deals (tired of paying monthly for biz tools?)
That "No Thanks, I hate to save money" is a classic dark pattern designed to manipulate people. There's tons of articles about how damaging they are to users perceptions of the interactions (Example https://www.nngroup.com/articles/shaming-users/ ). I honestly closed the browser and didn't give the content any look due to it, as if you're going to try to shame me into giving you my email address, you're not going to play fair with anything else.

SallySwanSmith··on Show HN: OormiPass – free, cross platform and open sourced password manager
Corruption detection is the main one, but it is indeed not a security issue
SallySwanSmith··on Why I lost $42,500 making a VR game
This was my thought as well. I usually buy games from HN to support people trying things, but the idea of spending uncomfortable time in the headset for an idle game just puts me off. If I'm going to play an idle game, it'll be while the tv is on and I'm in comfy clothes or in bed.
SallySwanSmith··on Postmates Driver Leaves Threatening Letter for Customer Who Didn't Tip
Sure, cause the next step is a Threatening Letter for too small of a tip....
SallySwanSmith··on Postmates laid off all its city managers yesterday
Same in Seattle. After 10 minutes of attempts I always give up and use someone else
SallySwanSmith··on Target is plotting a big move away from AWS as Amazon takes over retail
Just ask your suppliers for those. It’s not overly secretive

SallySwanSmith··on Don't Lower Your Expectations
To be entirely fair, a lot of my grief is based on my experience transitioning my frequent flier miles from virgin to Alaska. They had some sort of fault and I lost 250k miles and Alaska wouldn't do anything to correct the error. They kept saying that the system said I had zero miles even though I was able to show on virgin's site that they showed I had 250k at the time it was extracted for the move. It really soured me on them.
SallySwanSmith··on Don't Lower Your Expectations
Sadly I'm forced to lower my expectations when Virgin America was sold to Alaska :(
SallySwanSmith··on Wildcard Certificates Coming January 2018
Can you clarify who "our security team" is?
SallySwanSmith··on Ask HN: How to setup a k8s cluster with virtualbox VMs
This question really doesn't belong here, as it's solved by basic searching, however look into https://github.com/kubernetes/minikube
SallySwanSmith··on 'Scam baiters' get a kick out of conning the con artists

SallySwanSmith··on JSONbin.io – Simple JSON Storage (Beta)
Why is this better then just storing json files on s3?
SallySwanSmith··on Lyft and Waymo Reach Deal to Collaborate on Self-Driving Cars
At 80k new cars a year that's a 4mil a month waste of money. Tesla couldn't survive giving each car a 50/mo data plan forever.
SallySwanSmith··on Ask HN: How do I find an open source project to contribute to?
https://openhatch.org/ Is an nonprofit dedicated towards helping people find and get involved in open source software
SallySwanSmith··on Facebook CEO suing hundreds over Kauai land
> A contested case could potentially cost land owners more than $200,000, though Shultz says Zuckerberg has no intention of contesting any co-owner who can prove their interest in any of the land parcels.

Sounds like he just wants to ensure he doesn't build on any contested land.

SallySwanSmith··on [dead]
Can we seriously stop posting paywalled articles?
SallySwanSmith··on Ask HN: Should I join Amazon? Why? Or Why not?
If you have a good feeling about your manager and co-workers and like the sound of the work you are going to be doing, do it!

If you have reservations about the people or the work, don't do it. You'll burn out if your in the wrong fit.

SallySwanSmith··on Ask HN: Should I blog on Medium for my open-source project, or self-host?
I think it vastly depends on your users. Generally, I would recommend self-hosting on the same domain as the project landing page or similar. It's unlikely in my opinion that users would bother to read your posts on medium.
