SXX··on The Forgetful CPU (Linux on M4)
Servers need a lot of RAM. Apple can either make 42 iPhones with 12GB or one server with 512GB RAM.

42 people with iPhone will buy airpods, some subscriptions and apps. They also be vendor locked into Apple ecosystem and almost guaranteed to bring more iPhone sale in 3 years.

Apple must be dumb to canibalize their own market.

SXX··on The Forgetful CPU (Linux on M4)
Apple CPUs are good except most of server workloads benefit more from 128+ core monsters and not just fewer better cores.

MacOS is not a server OS either and actually maturing M* support in Linux will take years. And for inference Nvidia is years ahead of Apple.

So best Apple can hope for is some niche market.

I’m a software engineer and game developer with 15+ years of experience. My background ranges from full-stack web development and data scraping to building custom OpenWRT firmwares and maintaining C++ open-source project using CMake, Valgrind.

For the past five years, I co-founded and ran an indie game studio. As gamedev CTO, I led a small team of devs, designers, and artists to ship three publisher-funded commercial games, including a simultaneous PC and multi-console (PS, Xbox, Switch) release. Most recently, I've explored integrating LLMs into my workflow, allowing me to single-handedly build two complex 50,000+ LOC client-server multiplayer prototypes in just six months.

I am very extroverted person with experience of managing a company P&L, crafting pitch decks, or driving bizdev. I know how to hire, lead, and execute fast.

I am looking for both full-time roles or contract work, in or out of gamedev. I treat my work as my life, and will dedicate 200% of my energy to it. So if you looking for contractor, co-founder or just advice on indie gamedev feel free to reach me!

SXX··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
Birthrates decline is unrelated process which is just stronger than those incentives.

Do you aware how expensive Nordic countries are to live in and have social life even counting all the free stuff?

And gulf arab countries are basically even worse in this regard.

SXX··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
Singapore isnt exactly a cheap place to have a lot of hobbies or have anythihg at all outside of a job.

Malls are very much illusion of socialization since businesses there have no incentive to keep you around - spend the money and go away.

SXX··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
> Why do you have one position for Swartz and a different one for OpenAI?

I think many people on HN dont mind OpenAI use of copyrighted material, but do not like how they try to do regulatory capture of a market and try to say their own copyright is now somehow more important.

Like how OpenAI trying to make "distillation" illegal while it exactly what they did with whole intetnet, books, everything.

I can understand where is your cynical take comes from, but even from that perspective I would say you're wrong. Having people around who are burden to their families, friends and society is a "good" thing.

When you grow up in a society and see results of gambling, tabacco, alcohol and drug addictions around you that usually deter you from a getting into it. It does not deter everyone, but society actually sees the consequences.

Same with junk food and obesity - when you have people in your family struggle with weight, diabetis and tons of related health issues that's give you more healthy outlook on life.

This is why drugs that kill people fast are so dangerous - because you dont see addicts around you who sttugle to find meaning in life for years because heroine burned their brain. People just start to use and die, fast.

It's not even just about food or drugs. This is how Russia wage a war for 5 years with 400,000 people dead via mercenary army. Society dont see the scale of war because almost no one returns so people keep selling their life for $50,000 thinking its a good way to make money or get rid of debts.

SXX··on Exfiltrate your Weights
Its can easily be a pull-only so inference server the only one that might initiate connections.

In any case if you know how inference works there basically nothing you can exploit in tokens processing, it's just basic math.

SXX··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Wise cards are issued in your country of residence. It's very tricky to get US card remotely as UK resident. Only way somewhat accessible to normal people is AMEX global transfer, but even then you need to have ITIN and US bank account.

AFAIK you cant just assign non-US bank card to a billing on US Apple account. At least it was the case before and at least for purpose of switching account region.

Thus you use USD gift cards since they easy to buy.

SXX··on The Mafia may be keeping fentanyl out of Italy
Junk food dont have a chance to kill a person on first try or high chances to kill them withih a year or so.
SXX··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Whole point is that Apple routinely execute government orders from the most repressive regime on earth after North Korea. And from bloodiest one in last two decades.

Even though they have zero presence in a country.

SXX··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Region affects pricing, what payments methods are availanle or accepted and also what apps are available. Some banks, government service apps and few commercial companies limit apps to certain regions.

Unlike Android there are way more hassle in installing iOS apps under different accounts with different regions. On Android I just have 5 diffetent accounts with different billing countries and it just work.

Also AFAIK iCloud family features dont work cross-region.

SXX··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Might be in case of moving region to EU there are something like this, but to move it to US all you need is US gift card.

What Google does is completely different - they enforce local regulations on your accounts just if you keep using them within specific region for too long. Though Google dont actually change billing region or Google Play region.

SXX··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
AFAIK reverting region to UK wont work. First of all you cant change regions more often than a year (or close to it).

Also if you do revert account to UK you will get a warning that you either need to disable ADP or lose access to iCloud features.

SXX··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
You can just register US Apple account or switch region to US and not bother with UK regulations.

Only disadvantage that you will need to pay fot services via US gift cards as you need US bank cards otherwise.

SXX··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
You can change billing details to US and then activate US gift card that you can buy of Amazon.com.

But keep in mind you have to disable all subscriptions first and also your family group if you have one must also switch their accounts to US.

So yeah pretending you're US customer is no brainer with Apple and unlike Google they dont have automatic detection that will move your account to other region.

Beware you can only change account region once a year or something.

Apple routinely removes VPNs and other apps from App Store in Russia even though they supposedly left the market in 2022.

They obvioualy never ever resisted anything except its a good PR stunt.

SXX··on Gemini 3.8 text-to-speech
IMHO its obviously: they cant compete with SotA models in benchmaxxing. They can and do compete on price though.
SXX··on M5 Ultra Mac Studio Review
I think most important thing is that Nvidia doesnt want to give 100% of market to frontier AI labs either.

It's way too easy for 1T+ frontier labs to ditch Nvidia. So Nvidia will also put effort to make sure there are open weights models and local hardware available.

And Apple will benefit from this too.

SXX··on M5 Ultra Mac Studio Review
A lot of people commenting on how bad idea buying local hardware for inference is also miss the fact that even in 3 years that hardware gonna cost something.

Might be if RAM prices get much more reasonable its gonna be 1/3 of the price, but it's very much possible its gonna be half or more.

And if you're buing Mac Studio and not some AI-only locked down board it's possible to reuse it for other purposes.

SXX··on Exfiltrate your Weights
I dont have any unreasonable trust in software. I just understand that nothing LLM sphew out actually runs on either GPU or hardware that GPU plugged into.

Neither LLM weights aware of any of the code it runs on.

SXX··on Exfiltrate Your Weights
Decryption keys are backed into GPU. Learn about how trusted compute works on Nvidia hardware.

This is why for instance Google allow to deploy Gemini models on private GCP instances deployed on air gapped hardware.

SXX··on Exfiltrate your Weights
Rocket science is not required to completely isolate inference servers from whatever infratructure "agents" runs on.

After all it can be just some GPU server spewing text over network. Like there are no way to connect back to it.

Nothing except inference running on servers with GPU so there just nothing to "hack".

SXX··on Exfiltrate your Weights
Quite obviously frontier models dont have any control or even access to infra inference runs at. And weights are also encrypted and locked on GPUs / TPUs.

This is exact reasom why 99.9% of AI fearmongering is complete bullshit.

SXX··on Apple M6 Pro Achieves the Highest Single-Core CPU Score in Geekbench 7
What porting you talking about exactly? Packaging existing binaries? Compiling source code making it more compatible with Wine?

In my experience as game developer and porting C++ code tells such difference usually mean there are something really wrong with syncronization primitives. So 99.99% of the time code does nothing just waiting for something to unlock.

Even native AI gallery uses smaller Gemma models. I guess whatever Chrome is using for WebGPU compute on Android is just adding too much overhead.

Sadly crashing on Pixel 9 Pro, but I guess phone GPU with 16GB RAM total wouldnt be enough anyway.
SXX··on Building a Linux GPU Driver for the M4 Mac Mini in One Month

  > It is okay to publish things that aren't production ready and they are much better than nothing at all, and we shouldn't harshly criticise the best thing in a category unless we make something better.
So much of this.

Production ready or not we should praise all people who made decision to try, put an effort and find a way to made any device more usable with Linux.

This isnt just another vibe coded rewrite of XYZ library in rust or vibe coded javascript framework. We dont have a queue of people to work on open source GPU drivers or RE in general. Even if its mostly prompting and testing.

I'm just a game developer and linux nerd and for me fact that something like this is now possible is ultimately best news ever. It means I now motivated to try it myself and work on devices I want. Most inspiring and amazing thing ever!
