I think fundamentally if we want people to care about things again, we are going to need to give them ownership of the things they produce. Otherwise, why would anyone care?
My 2 cents: I would devote the remainder of my life to solving problems that the current system is unoptimized for. Things that seem intractable like the housing crisis, homelessness, climate change, food insecurity. Like this guy who is trying to re-green a part of the Sonoran Desert after getting a windfall from helping the El Salvadoran government switch to Bitcoin [1].
I think ultimately the author is going to have to find a very difficult task/goal that will require similar if not greater effort compared to starting Loom.
On the employer side, I would prefer the take home assignment over existing code, unless the existing code was super high quality or highly relevant to the company.
It just does cosine similarity with OpenAI embeddings + pgVector. It's not perfect by any means, but it's useful. It could probably stand to be improved with a re-ranker, but I just never got around to it.
I know it's an impossible question, but nonetheless, what's the best distro to use for someone who just wants a useable desktop?
Do what excites you, and interviewers will pick up on that!
