S4M··on Kilo LISP
I think they named it like that because it's 1k lines of code.
S4M··on “No, we’re telling everyone we are using Java”
Why didn't they specify beforehand theor language choice? The negociation about Jython you describe should have taken place before the work started
S4M··on Paris's Rue Cremieux Has an Instagram Problem
I think you missed the sarcasm in your parent comment.
S4M··on Middle School Misfortunes Then and Now, One Teacher’s Take
Depending on what dirt was dug this could be called defamation which is illegal.
S4M··on Hy: A Dialect of Clojure Embedded in Python
The canonical example of macro that is useful "in the wild" is embedding SQL in your code. See for example http://www.gigamonkeys.com/book/practical-an-mp3-database.ht...

(Disclosure: I am just an occasional LISP dabbler)

S4M··on Hy: A Dialect of Clojure Embedded in Python
I like the concept of Hy, but has anyone used it for something "serious"?
S4M··on Upvote for HN Darkmode?
I suppose one could make a Firefox/Chrome addon for that.
S4M··on Sam Altman: Bay Area is no longer the obvious place for startups
There are many places like you described, they are just not in the US.
S4M··on Ask HN: Linear algebra textbooks
I found this one by Terence Tao, though I haven't checked it yet: http://www.math.ucla.edu/~tao/resource/general/115a.3.02f/

Tao is a top mathematician who is well known for his ability to make complex topics seem simple (see his blog https://terrytao.wordpress.com) so his class is probably worth checking if you are interested in linear algebra.

S4M··on Wanted: Cofounder for YC S19. Robotic Tunnel Delivery of Groceries/food/packages
A person could get in a pipe of 700mm diameter? I seriously doubt it.
S4M··on A small notebook for a system administrator
Do you have your mobile IDE available somewhere? I am looking for a way to code from my cellphone and I can't user Termux without a code keyboard (to get ctrl, tab, etc.) which takes most of the screen space on my phone.
S4M··on Google proposes changes to Chromium which would disable uBlock Origin
What are the advantages of Chrome over Firefox?
S4M··on Google launches an AI contest for social good
What you just described is called reinforcement learning.
S4M··on NumPy 1.16 is the last release to support Python 2.7
Probably the Python 3 code was rushed and/or written by an inexperienced programmer. That would just be a coincidence, nothing to do with Python 2 or 3.
S4M··on Virgin Galactic successfully reaches space
I think tigershark is referring to this nice comment you made a few days ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18644724
S4M··on Ask HN: What are job interview questions that can be used to reject regardless
Right now as I am interviewing instead of working overtime for free.
S4M··on Building a Language and Compiler for Machine Learning
> As someone who works in merging differential equations and machine learning

That sounds really interesting, could you expand on your work/research?

S4M··on Clojure REBL [video]
> But in Python you're limited to working on the context of a single module. If you modify a module that was imported then you have to restart the REPL because you can't reload modules. It just doesn't work.

This is so frustrating, the Python REPL does some kind of module caching, and I haven't found how to disable it. When I asked on IRC a few years ago, I was told that I was using the REPL for the wrong purpose.

S4M··on Ditching the MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air
Linux user here. I had to use MacOS at work, I felt like it was a penance more than anything else. However Apple hardware is quite good.
S4M··on Ask HN: Any books related to machine learning or AI
I know those two that explain deep learning from scratch:

http://www.deeplearningbook.org/

http://neuralnetworksanddeeplearning.com/

S4M··on Ask HN: Other online communities like HN?
The same options as someone wanting to read Hacker News without knowing English.
S4M··on Fun with Symbolic Derivatives in Lisp
Not really a feedback, but I wrote something very similar a bit more than two years ago: http://eskatrem.github.io/Newton-Raphson.html
S4M··on Ask HN: What do you do in your 1-on-1s with your direct reports?
Hi,

Completely off topic, but I am looking for a job in Japan - I will be moving there tomorrow actually for family reason. Could I have your details (or could you send me an email - my email is in my HN profile.) I am a senior data scientist. Thanks in advance

S4M··on Finance makes Apple and Google forced friends
Would they need to make a return directly? If they could buy it and put significant resources on it, they'll have a direct competitor against Google, with the advantages of coming by default on Apple devices and of being privacy friendly. Just that might scare Google to pay them more to leave the Search space and put back Google as their default search engine.
S4M··on Can moons have moons?
Your username is well suited to comment this article.
S4M··on Ask HN: What is expected of a 20 yr experienced coder at the age of 40+ in IT?
Are you a manager now?
S4M··on How to deliver on Machine Learning projects
I think everybody understood that "viola" was a typo.
S4M··on Ask HN: What do you use MS Excel for?
> If your excel files have anything for forward planning and you want to share those files, I'd be interested.

Unfortunately there was no planning involved, one spreadsheet was just for her to put stuff she bought and the spreadsheet would calculate how much she spent in the month/week. Another one was for her to calculate how much the Saturday children center she is running would earn per month.

Since you made a webapp for personal finances, let me mention you the one a friend made: https://spendbook.net/main it doesn't do planning but I think he'll still be happy to get some feedback.

S4M··on Ask HN: What do you use MS Excel for?
I use it to do super quick data analysis sometimes, and also I made a few spreadsheets to help my wife to manage our personal finance.
S4M··on Sly: Sylvester the Cat's Common Lisp IDE
Honest question: what is preventing you from trying Common Lisp in Emacs?
