S4M··on Actively speaking two languages protects against cognitive impairment
Or maybe just not being a native English speaker.
S4M··on Show HN: Read The Count of Monte Cristo and others in installments in your email
Thanks! I generally prefer books over audiobooks, but I may listen to an audiobook for a change. I read plenty of books by Alexandre Dumas in the past, and a few by Jules Verne.

I wasn't aware of Verne's views, but I would guess they were pretty common during his time, so I would abstain to pass a judgement on him and focus on his pioneering work on scifi.

It's a great idea, just one suggestion: would it be possible to choose the language of the novels we decide to read? For example, I am French, so I would rather read _The Count of Monte Christo_, _Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Seas_ or _Madame Bovary_ in their original versions.

You could imagine that it's a rule in the company where GP works that programmers have to notify the boss when they change CreditChecking.java. GP's colleagues who are not using emacs would have to do it manually, while GP would do it automatically.

You are right, I should have read TFA.
S4M··on Google adds experimental setting to hide full URLs in Chrome 85 address bar
Just to play the devil advocate, removing the url bar gives slightly more room to display the website.
S4M··on Ask HN: What kind of math do you study in your free time?
I tried to learn Galois theory on Coursera a few years ago (the course was in French, which is my mother tongue, but probably few HNers can understand it), and failed the class partly due to lack of time. Since then I've been trying from time to time to read about it, which refreshed knowledge of Group theory, but so far I haven't gotten to the point where I understand Galois's idea to prove that some polynomial equations are not solvable by radicals.

First, I am not the one who downvoted you. My reply was more about giving an anecdote countering yours, than being a nationalist.

About France remembering its history, it's true that for a long time some things were hidden, but in 1995 (I think) the then President Jacques Chirac said that France should own the crimes commited by the Vichy government.

I am not saying that every bad deed done by France is not hidden somewhere, but some efforts were made by the French to reconcile with their history.

S4M··on List of oldest continuously inhabited cities
I am French and I don't think that at all, nor do I know anybody who thinks like that.
S4M··on Denmark: No aid for companies which pay out dividends or are reg. in tax havens
It's about people being able to trust their currency. Let me explain: suppose that your government was creating a huge amount of money out of nothing. It would result in a massive inflation and, with the value of money being completely unstable, people would resort to alternative ways of paying for thing: a more stable foreign currency, gold, crypto currencies, or even barter. You can see it happening in countries with a massive inflation (Zimbabwe, or Argentina in the early 2000's are the examples that are on top of my mind). So, this is a scenario the governments have to avoid at all cost, and in theory they should create just enough money so the inflation matches the growth of the country.

However, the growth of the country is very hard to measure (directly taking the growth of the GDP would not necessarily match it), so there is no consensus on what the inflation should be exactly, which gives the authority in charge of creating money some leeway on exactly how much money to create. If this authority was the government, it would be tempting to have the inflation be slightly higher than the country's growth, in order to "trick" people into believing that they got slightly richer and have them spend more. And this could work for some time, but at some point people would become wary of the government and as a result would spend less, slowing down the economy. So it becomes a game (in the sense of game theory) between the government and the consumers, and the solution is to have an independent entity in charge of money creation, so people can know with more certainty that the "right" amount of money is being created.

S4M··on REPL Debugging: No Stacktrace Required (2017)
> I gave a talk[1] explaining the REPL and most people in the audience (including senior Java, C# and Python developers) had never seen something like that before.

I find that quite surprising, as I use the REPL a lot when coding in Python.

S4M··on Burnoutindex.org
I got 2.3/6 and my burnout risk is "mid", so they probably weight some questions more than others when assessing the burnout risk.

S4M··on Lisp Macros by Example
I think it's fine.

In the first occurrence, $(sourceCodeSnippet) is replaced in the code, and later evaluated (and the result of this evaluation will be passed to the const result).

In the second occurrence, it is replaced inside a string, so it doesn't get evaluated, but the source code is just treated as a string (and displayed in the error message).

Note that the macro nullthrows is just generating some code depending of sourceCodeSnippet, and this code will be evaluated later.

S4M··on Relearning Matrices as Linear Functions
I just skimmed the article quickly. Are there other ways to learn about matrices? If you don't treat them as linear applications, they are just boring grids of numbers and the matrices multiplication doesn't make any sense.

Those are the arguments they are giving against Medium:

> Medium is very slow (compare). Medium's paywall is an insult to good journalism by forcing specific users to pay for content of often questionable quality. The Medium membership model doesn't work for several folks (likely you too). But, most importantly Medium dilutes your brand and negatively impacts essential metrics.
