S-E-P··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
I will give you that this instance is extreme.

How does being critical of AI directly connect to a spurious association with antifa or any connection to a riot or shooting?

These two categories are different. I agree there is overreach in Sanchez's case however i don't know how one can assume the same will happen to some guy saying "AI bad"

If they were rioting; or connected to a rioting group, that might be different.

S-E-P··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
you make it more than it is.

we are not Russia nor China thankfully, any litigation at this stage against an AI critic would fall flat.

In the future, maybe? However in the current climate it's just a bunch of empty words like the rest of the admin has been

Well yeah, but I'm pretty sure there was another breach around 2016 that had similar info from the FBI

Hasn't that db been pwned previously?
S-E-P··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
It is pretty funny to me that the transhumanist movement is hoping that these LLMs can eventually move past a parody of human intelligence.

A lot of weird folks in that arena, a lot of strange books too that they wrote for the consumption of the public. It's always the same backstory too.

this u?

> AI will replace all of them soon.

What is that spaghetti of words you tied together to form a sentence? Were you trying to be comprehensible?

S-E-P··on How to Write with an LLM
It's sad that reading has become that way for you.

I love reading, but I mostly read non-fiction and I'm a bit of an amateur history buff. Last time I read a fiction book I was left feeling like I was preached to by an alien about how life doesn't really matter (sci-fi authors will often do that). The state of literature is pretty dire.

> If someone is spreading deception, intentionally or not, then it's entirely within my rights to point out they are without engaging further.

What is it with millennials and "rights"? It's a sincere question. People don't owe you anything and neither do you owe me anything, sure... so why do you demand another have a higher standard that you yourself hold to. I know you don't hold yourself to that standard because you would rather nitpick someone on a single inaccuracy then grapple with a very real issue (which you yourself would not appreciate if they did that to you). The respectable thing to do is to note the inaccuracy and approach the valid portion of the argument sincerely.

What you demonstrate is a lack of care for those around you, and a lack of care for what is actually true. You would rather "umm actually" then treat others with an ounce of respect. It's shameful and devoid of grace.

S-E-P··on How to Write with an LLM
I fear in the future people will read even less because of how often people cheap out and use AI to write. I know the author of this article tells you never to use a single word it suggests, however I still, while reading, am checking for any amount of AI used. This makes reading less enjoyable, and even a bit stressful.

If you can't spend the time to write it, why should anyone read it?

Everything I post is from my own finger tips, only to get a reply from someone using a bot. I'm tired.

As long as they can operate under capacity (for the grid) I don't disagree.

However I live in a much nicer area than Chicago and any Walmart, large mass of people, or DC would really destroy the PV as well as it would be an eyesore.

I don't really understand why so many just want to over industrialize so many beautiful places so that a corp. can sell the next gimmicky iteration of our "best model yet" which is just slightly slower and more expensive then the previous.

S-E-P··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds

S-E-P··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
It's mostly the emissions from diesel generators which many DCs use as it's far too expensive to ever shut them down. Often diesel generators are used to lighten the load on a power grid as well, so many DCs will run generators 24/7.

That source of power, since our grid is so outdated and struggles with the weight of these power-hogs, EVs as well as increased usage of AC during the summers create some dangerous conditions.

There is the risk of heavy metals getting into the water supply as the copper degrades but that will only be a problem down the line, that's prescient but not yet realized.

> I'm willing to bet that a datacenter creates a fraction of the pollution of a similarly sized industrial facility such as a chemical plant, refinery, smelter, or steel mill.

I agree; however I would not want a DC or a refinery, smelter or steel mill anywhere near my town. We have industrial districting for that reason, and because a lot of DC projects want to be put next to lakes and water sources, this causes issues for the residents.

S-E-P··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
You still have to grapple with the merits of their argument to find out if the indicator is correct or not.

In a world where everybody seems to be quoting grok with no further thought process you would think people would be more welcoming of someone who is "slightly wrong" on occasion. It's the strongest indicator that a flawed human being got their information not directly from a machine.

S-E-P··on Everybody's Lost Their Minds
datacenters are stinky though and ruin property values. (as well as can, and has, polluted water sources in some cases)

I don't disagree with your assertion; however you do have to realize that their grievances, while not completely informed, are not wrong.

Conveniently the only companies that warn of a new and dangerous advancement are the ones hemorrhaging money.

Remember when Mythos marked the end of man and the birth of a new race of bots nuking secure systems from orbit?

If a company of a bunch of startup grifters can come up with a tactical nuke of LLM supremacy, why can't the brightest China has to offer already have that technology?

S-E-P··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
How would you suggest someone make a good tutorial for DF that doesn't leave the player exhausted by the time they start a new game?

That's my core complaint w/ strategy games. By the time I'm done with the tutorial i have to do other things only to forget everything I learned the next time I get to sit down with it.

At best "hints" or a glossary/help menu is the best way imo.

S-E-P··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
macOS is also just a proper PITA through and through. I'm annoyed that I can't play it on my m4 but I also understand that supporting macOS has always been a nuisance.

If I were making games I wouldn't support it either. Apple does just about everything to not support backwards compat.

S-E-P··on Decompiling a Nintendo 64 game in 84 days
The term "original assembly code" is sufficient enough to communicate that the binaries that are being reversed are what is disclosed to the public intentionally.

Their comment still stands; whether it's machine code or "original assembly code" that shipped on the disk it falls under "clean room" reversing and by extension implementation.

idk man, it seems like a bunch of glass houses.

In context if you read what I said I didn't imply Metux was the best out there; I was highlighting how absolutely terrible Wayland is and how I will take anything at this point.

S-E-P··on Xwayland 26.1.0 rc1
The "be better" comment was used exclusively by the worst people i knew for 4 years straight. So for me, absolutely.

It's condescending, unnecessary, and it is a polarizing comment people who are miserable leave to annoy the rest of us.

S-E-P··on Xwayland 26.1.0 rc1
I don't doubt you. I think it's a good way to look at it. I appreciate what he's trying to do with Xlibre but I would never work in that environment with or without him.

As I said to the other guy I just hope this is better than what we have and I'll take about anything at this rate. I don't care to deal with people on that level anymore, which is why I stopped developing OSS over 10 years ago; everyone has their opinions about the code, if they can't solve that they fight over politics to "justify" forking and the downward spiral ever goes downward.

S-E-P··on Xwayland 26.1.0 rc1
> Be better

What year are we in?

S-E-P··on Xwayland 26.1.0 rc1
Ah yes, "he doesn't agree with me, therefore he must be [insane|incapable|inept]" argument tied in with some nothing burger about Metux pushing code that could break things.

While I'm over here having to move to Xorg as Wayland breaks my applications about once every two months. Breaking changes, poor code quality, LLMs, or maybe it's just that the devs of Wayland were more motivated by their own personal needs/wants then the Xorg users.

I can never get back the hours I lost troubleshooting graphics drivers only to realize that Wayland claimed it should work, but doesn't. I'll take whatever Metux gives me if it works, or from anyone else for that matter.

S-E-P··on Claude Opus 4.8
I haven't had the best experience with 4.7 and it felt like a substantial debuff. I've even ended up moving a lot of review to codex just because 4.7 was so dense.. Here's to hoping they figured it out since I'm not entirely sure but I would have to guess that they were experimenting with making the model lighter (although I have no concrete evidence of this).

S-E-P··on Does Gas Town 'steal' usage from users' LLM credits to improve itself?
I appreciate that it's an issue to try and improve the product you are using currently. As if those tokens were totally "stolen" and not for your benefit is laughable.

This is like when someone torrents and is immediately agro'd the moment your bittorrent client gives some poor passerby a kb of data
