RyanOD··on Scores decline again for 13-year-old students in reading and mathematics
Oh yeah, we never did ANY of that when we were kids...

"Children spend an insane amount of time in school yet it has little results."

What do you mean by "little results" and what data supports it?

And parents are equally distracted from their job of parenting by those same devices. Want to help your child with their education? Support their teachers when/if your child is making poor decisions at school.

Yes to this! What makes a great teacher is the willingness to hold kids accountable for their behavior and their work. Sure, it helps to be a subject expert, but that won't matter if you can't manage your classroom.

And parents play an equally important role. One of the best things you can do for your child's education/life is support the teacher when they call you up and say, "Your child is making poor decisions..."

Yes to this! So many people turn a blind eye to the critical role parents play in supporting teachers holding kids accountable. And I get it, holding kids accountable is very, very challenging, but that's the gig people sign up for when they decide to have a family.

And I'm a former high school teacher and my wife is a current high school teacher so I've experienced all of this first-hand.

RyanOD··on German Dog Commands
When I was a kid, my neighbors had a doberman pinscher they named, "schatzie" ("sweetheart").

I remember them using the "sitz" and "platz" commands.

RyanOD··on How to get better at guitar
I'm working on becoming a better piano player and forcing myself to read sheet music. To your point, it's incredibly difficult. To the point that I'm 50/50 about whether I'll ever get good enough for it to matter. I'm learning songs, but in nearly every case I'm mostly memorizing the song. It's really frustrating.

I've been advised to use a keyboard to record my playing without being able to hear it and playing straight from the sheet music. I haven't tried it yet though.

That's fantastic! Pros find a way.
RyanOD··on How to get better at guitar
Obscure "learn it by ear" guitar story...

Upon hearing Eruption for the first time, the story goes that Tony MacAlpine learned to play the finger tapping section by PICKING IT because he didn't know finger tapping was a thing. Only after seeing Van Halen in concert did he realize what Eddie was doing.

If memory serves me right, I read this in either Guitar Player or Guitar World magazine back in the late 80s or early 90s. Whether Tony was embellishing or not is unknown.

Here is a suggestion...

First, figure out the bass line. That typically suggests the chord progression. If you know your chords, then, for simple songs, you have the rhythm figured out.

For solos, it's more tricky. If you aren't familiar with common soloing patterns (licks) and/or scales then start with simple solos and work your way up.

RyanOD··on How to get better at guitar
I've been playing guitar for 30+ years. When I was a kid, I learned almost everything by ear - note by note by note...

In hindsight, once I had learned a song, I had actually learned MUCH more than just that song. It is that "extra" that adds up over time and makes one a guitarist and not just someone who can play some songs on the guitar.

Rock on!

RyanOD··on Is anybody else bored of talking about AI?
Terrible and hilarious.
RyanOD··on We haven't seen the worst of what gambling and prediction markets will do
Completely agree with this. I watch many commercials on television targeting elderly folks and I just cringe. They seem to be doing everything they can to separate the viewer from their money for a dubious product or service.

Coffee pours are similarly sketchy.

Should have banned him from playing Top Secret.
RyanOD··on Building a new Flash
Good luck with this project. Very exciting!

I used to teach high school computer science classes and we built web pages with this new thing called "CSS" (no more tables!) and games in Flash. Cutting edge work we did. Those were good times.

RyanOD··on Picking Up a Zillion Pieces of Litter
We do this in the summer when we visit the shores of Lake Michigan. The amount of washed up junk we find is shocking.
RyanOD··on I'm losing the SEO battle for my own open source project
Lame to have to do all this pointless busy work just to "win" the SEO battle.
RyanOD··on Little Free Library
A great project for any student taking wood shop (our daughter built our LFL last semester).
RyanOD··on OpenAI raises $110B on $730B pre-money valuation
"so that they can extricate as much personal wealth and influence as possible"

I've always thought this. If you're running something like OpenAI, it really doesn't matter to you if the company fails because you're already comfortably wealthy. But, it sure would be nice to be worth another 10x billion - though I'm not totally sure why.

So these individuals perceive a large upside and no downside. It's more of a hobby than a job. Like learning to play piano. It would be amazing to be a badass pianist...but not a big deal if that never happens.

RyanOD··on OpenAI raises $110B on $730B pre-money valuation
I agree with this. For the casual user, I feel AI is only a "nice to have".

RyanOD··on I pitched a roller coaster to Disneyland at age 10 in 1978
I wasn't joking. I don't think that was a form letter. I think someone took the time to write a personalized, thoughtful letter to a wide-eyed 10-year old.

The world needs more of that.

RyanOD··on Jimi Hendrix was a systems engineer
YES! Saw this movie 40 years ago and started playing guitar the next day. Haven't stopped since. Thanks, Steve Vai!

Oh wow! This is incredible...thanks for sharing.

I've often marveled at the success many guitar players had with experimental electronics - Hendrix, EVH, Les Paul, Brian May, Jack White, and Tom Scholz (special case, of course) are just a few examples.

I feel like society is decades away from being comfortable with "you can go off to do whatever while it completes the task"...regardless of whether or not the tech is there.
