Ruthalas··on App Store Arguments
This seems only partially accurate, in that the users have no say in their representation, unlike a union.
Ruthalas··on Facebook says I'm abusive content [video]
For what it's worth, Rossman also publishes on alternate platforms such as LBRY.
Ruthalas··on A new era of personalised medicine: or how I got myself sequenced for free
Out of curiosity, why 'never again'?

If your concern is that your genetic information is no longer entirely private, wouldn't continuing to act as a donor cause no /further/ harm? (They aren't getting anything they don't already have I guess.)

Ruthalas··on We’ll stop selling our Code Editor app for iOS soon
That definitely seems to be accurate, but it's undercut by marketing campaigns like "what's a computer" that seem designed to push toward no distinction.
Ruthalas··on Show HN: I made a simulator for personal finance
I think the parent was trying to express that the app seemed designed for a specific demographic, and didn't generalize as well as it could. (And they therefore suggested a feature that would help it function well for a broader audience.)
Ruthalas··on Tool can make photos undetectable to facial recognition without ruining them
Fair enough. I'd argue that in this case the winning move is not to make the potential liability of the data available.

As an 'arms race', the outcomes are very unbalanced.

Ruthalas··on Tool can make photos undetectable to facial recognition without ruining them
The difference is that if you 'lose', all your previous victories change to losses as well, as all the images you've released that were previously impervious are now fair game.
Ruthalas··on Apple is sued for telling you that you're “buying” movies
Do you prefer Jellyfin over Emby? I'm evaluating which to set up right now.
Ruthalas··on SponsorBlock – Skip over sponsorship segments on YouTube
A relatively popular fork of youtube-dl called yt-dlp has options to use SponsorBlock to either remove or timestamp sponsored content during the download process.

I personally wouldn't use the remove feature, but being able to flag and timestamp all sponsored/ad sections in my archives is a delightful feature to have.

Thank you ajayyy for such a great tool.

Ruthalas··on Proposed bill to ban US government from buying location data [pdf]
Out of curiosity, how do you make changes or opt out?
Ruthalas··on Element Matrix Services Launches Bridging for Microsoft Teams
Can you suggest a well maintained xmpp client? I was partial to pidgin years ago.
Ruthalas··on DuckDuckGo Extension to Block FLoC, Google’s New Tracking Method in Chrome
Is there another search engine you recommend instead?
Ruthalas··on NSFW Server Designation
Can you clarify what you mean here? Is that a store policy?
Ruthalas··on Surround Sound in Headphones
This comment may not be entirely serious, but there are people out there- myself included- who would pay for the described service.
Ruthalas··on Human taste buds can tell the difference between normal and 'heavy' water
This site [1] maintains an excellent backup of Cody's body of work. I also personally make a similar archive available on Soulseek. Hope that helps folks interested in seeing that content!

Ruthalas··on Ask HN: What under-the-radar technology are you excited about?
Is there a client that I can run and point at an existing file structure to make it all available on via IPFS? Perhaps with limiting on outgoing bandwidth?
Ruthalas··on An interview with the man who keeps uploading my feet to WikiFeet
That last sentence is appreciated. :)
Ruthalas··on Snobbery Helped Take the Spice Out of European Cooking (2015)
Out of curiosity, what nuclear disaster are you referring to?
Ruthalas··on A Cephalopod Has Passed a Cognitive Test Designed for Human Children
I suspect you have more experience than I, and I know my imagining is poorly founded!

I think pigs have just received enough good PR recently that they come to mind as another particularly intelligent animal.

Ruthalas··on A Cephalopod Has Passed a Cognitive Test Designed for Human Children
The parent commenter has probably, like me, heard that pigs are remarkably intelligent. I haven't heard the same of cows.

That may very well be a skewed understanding, but it's likely why they choose that grouping.

Ruthalas··on Show HN: Khan-dl – Khan Academy Course Downloader
If you end up archiving youtube content, consider stopping by my discord server. https://discord.gg/EJvS4kf

We maintain a list of content that various members have archived, such that when content is removed from youtube, people can direct inquiries to contributors who have archived that content.

It's a small way to keep track of what things have been successfully archived, and direct efforts toward at-risk channels.

Ruthalas··on Terraria on Stadia cancelled after developer's Google account gets locked
Would you be willing to share your resource for 'aged' accounts? Email is in profile if you'd prefer to send a private message.
Ruthalas··on Terraria on Stadia cancelled after developer's Google account gets locked
At least with game streaming services, I suspect advertising resolution serves the double purpose of being understandable to most consumers, while specifically obfuscating bitrate, which is the sacrificed statistic.
Ruthalas··on The computers rejecting job applications
I suppose that speaks positively of the recruiter's ability to find the right person for the job!
Ruthalas··on Cixin Liu's Postscript for the American Edition for “The Three Body Problem”
That was the express reason I chose to read these specific novels.

Makes the changes more disappointing.

Ruthalas··on Czech trainers teach dogs to sniff out Covid: 95-percent success rate
I think the parent comment meant that the infected individual might not be addressing the smell because they could not perceive it, and it would therefore be greater than typical for them.
Ruthalas··on Archivists Are Preserving Capitol Hill Riot Livestreams Before They’re Deleted
You can find a decent archive of footage from the recent event here: https://twitter.com/_IntelligenceX/status/134696834457076940...

No affiliation, although I uploaded some that I archived.

Ruthalas··on A physical breach is a nightmare scenario for Capitol IT
There's at least one photo of the screen of an unlocked laptop, with a security warning popup in the corner suggesting evacuation.
Ruthalas··on YouTube removed a Cybersecurity channel without much reason
That's fair. I take automatic backups of the sheet, such that if access to that is eventually lost I can republish via another method.

Discord is used for the simple reason that the current goal is to gain as much traction and participation as possible. The Rocketchat server I host, and the IRC channels I could have used would both acted as barriers of entry to a lot of possible participants.

Perhaps with time I can push for a migration to a solution I host. For the moment I'll stick with these tools, and plan for their failure as best I can.

Ruthalas··on YouTube removed a Cybersecurity channel without much reason
I've considered uploading to a peertube instance, but I ran into an issue where the instance seemed to have a policy prohibiting mirroring existing/live channels.

For the moment I make my archive available via Soulseek, and am open to requests!
