For me personally, it represents the fact that the company is actively working against my best interests, and that feels bad. Additionally, completely selfishly, it makes me sad to see games that I would otherwise enjoy be distorted by this sort of monetization.
So the players who are "paying what they want (mostly zero)" aren't getting a normal but free Diablo game, they are getting version of that game balanced and prioritized around the whales that /will/ be spending the money. The actual customers.
I'd rather pay than "free-ride", because I don't want incessant popups telling me how how I can skip the grind (that is tuned to irritate me) by buying a gems with my credit card.
I'm not as valuable to Blizzard/Activision/NetEase with my one-time-purchase though, and they know it.
Primarily because you are correct.
I think a nice addition at the bottom would be the addendum, "if the goal is maximise profit at all costs and there is no regard for their customer-base beyond how effectively they can be exploited."
So any game that includes this sort of transactional mechanic has a strong perverse incentive to waste your time.
Fortunately this was viable and the game doesn't punish you for not engaging with every facet of the varied upgrade/crafting/salvaging systems.
So that may be an option if you'd like to complete it!
I currently use FairEmail, so that's a concern for me, but I'd not heard that it was happening in this conversation so far.
Last I checked we couldn't really achieve that at meaningful scale.
(Or do you simply mean this sort of XR is useless until we get decent holography?)
I opened a tab to give it a try, but backed out when I had to provide an email to see how it played. Assuming I enjoyed it, I'd then be motivated to make an account to keep track of my play.
It's very convenient when it does.
I definitely fine myself more engaged by Elon's presentations despite his performance.
I'm not sure if that counts as charisma, but it's not nothing.
Lehpt Anonym, a 'biohacker' even planned to implant a similar device in their leg[1], though I don't know if they succeeded.

Have the more recent episodes moved past that? I'd like to give it another shot.
I think the output format is json, so not the cleanest to simply read though.
Perhaps a hardware issue, or NewPipe handles spotty connections poorly or something.
I'd pay twice the yearly cost or more if it was a one-time purchase.
A subscription model is an immediate pass though.
Edit: Dev clarifies elsewhere that the license is perpetual and subsequent payments cover updates. If a nonrecurring payment option exists, then I would happily make use of that, and quite possibly return to pay for updates.
I'm not sure it exactly fits your ideal, but it's closer than anything else I've seen to how I'd like it to work.
I would have, at face value, considered the acquisition a bit odd given Epic's primary product.
