Ruq··on Semicolons bring the drama; that's why I love them
I thank my Mom for trying to instill enough Grammatical knowledge where I use the semicolon from time to time.
Ruq··on AI image recognition detects bubble-like structures in the universe
My takeaway is that the universe is soda.
Ruq··on I-cant-believe-its-not-webusb: Hacking around lack of WebUSB support in Firefox
Chrome Web Notifications are also a complete dumpster-fire. In my experience the average older folk has no idea what web notifications are. They accidentally enable notifications from shady websites over time, and then blindly believe the web-spam notifications being pushed to their phone informing them *HELLO YOUR PHONE HAS VIRUS DOWNLOAD "CLEANER APP" TO FIX BEFORE PHONE DIE* is legit.
Ruq··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
Honestly I'm surprised that rather than trying to build stupid backdoors and such, tyrannical governments don't just try to make a encryption key database. They hold ALL the keys and can get into anything they want, anytime they want. If you get caught with keys or encrypted data they can't access, punishment ensues.

Like if you're gonna try to eliminate privacy and freedom, just be honest and open about your intentions.

Ruq··on Writing a Rust compiler in C
It always comes back to C.
Ruq··on The Origins of DS_store (2006)
Every time I see it I think Nintendo DS.
Ruq··on Microsoft pauses Windows 11 update as it's sending some PCs into infinite reboot
windows moment
Ruq··on Wine 9.9 (Dev) – Run Windows Applications on Linux, BSD, Solaris and macOS
Afaik Proton is just Wine + Prebuilt configs and tweaks.
Ruq··on Windows 11 adding ads to Start Menu
https://universal-blue.org

Using the Bazzite image has replaced Windows for me. Basically everything works.

Ruq··on Embezzlers Are Nice People (2017)
This explains Boeing.
Ruq··on Microsoft employees exposed internal passwords in security lapse
Security sucks to the average joe. I tried to help my Mom set up 2FA and...it didn't work out well.

Most average people are just confused by it, but it's so important for security the focus shouldn't be getting rid of it, but figuring out how to make it buttery smooth to use.

Ruq··on How web bloat impacts users with slow devices
Modern webdev is fugged
Ruq··on How web bloat impacts users with slow devices
Related: Too much of technology today doesn't pay attention or even care to the less technologically adept, either.

Smartphones in my opinion are a major example of this. I can't tell you the number of people I've meet who barely even or don't even know how to use their devices. It's all black magic to them.

The largest problem is the over-dependence on the use of "Gesture Navigation" which is invisible and thus non-existent to them. Sure, they might figure out the gesture bar on an iPhone, but they have no conception of the notification/control center.

It's not that these people are dumb either, many of them could probably run circles around me in other fields, but when it comes to tech, it's not for a lack of trying, it's a lack of an intuitive interface.

Ruq··on Meta AI releases Code Llama 70B
Zuck just wants another robot to talk to.
Ruq··on Pixar to undergo 20% layoffs in 2024
Lightyear wasn't a success either when you consider marketing costs, which apparently makes it where you need 1.5x the budget just to break even, or so I've read.
Ruq··on 'Biocomputer' combines lab-grown brain tissue with electronic hardware
Aw sweet, man-made horrors beyond my comprehension...
Ruq··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
that fast huh?
Ruq··on Krita 5.2
Android Tablet with Krita is the goat...I have an S9 which comes with a pen...
Ruq··on NYPD will use drones to monitor backyard parties this weekend
Hypothetically, of course.
Ruq··on Linux has achieved a 3% desktop market share
Time Travelers, man.
Ruq··on More than 75% of Steam games tested are playable or verified on the Steam Deck
>Failed Experiments

Lessons Learned. The Steam Deck is the culmination of previous iterations. Even with the flop of the Steam Machines, The Steam Controller and Steam Link have ended up as Cult Classics, and there is the possibility they'll get revisions down the line, even if they end up minor niche releases.

Ruq··on A look inside the SNES, PS5, and Xbox controllers with CT scans
Must be related to hand size or something, because I find the Xbox controller considerably more comfortable than the Playstation Controller
Ruq··on OpenGL 3.1 on Asahi Linux
Their work tempts me to get a Mac some day just because I know I can run Linux on it.
Ruq··on Times New Bastard
MY EYES
Ruq··on 0AD, an open source historical RTS in development for 22 years
You are 100% correct. I remember over the years always seeing it when viewing alphabetical listings of packages in various distros.
Ruq··on 20 Years of Gentoo
Not if you have enough threads...
Ruq··on I Still Use Windows 95 (2008)
> both the audience and the objectives have changed...

This idea has been disastrous for modern software.

Ruq··on Windows 11 in Svelte
I switched to Linux entirely (but may reinstall windows as a second OS for some games if I get the wild hair...), and while it can still be buggy at times here and there (Arch Linux, so go figure), it's usually my fault, and it can be remedied most of the time.

Still a thousand times better of an experience than Windows.

Ruq··on Pixel phones are sold with bootloader unlocking disabled
I don't think carriers should be allowed to hard-lock phones either, but that's another thread for another day.
Ruq··on Remove “This incident will be reported.” from user warnings
Just change it to "This incident has been logged to /PATH." and that should be fine, right? Or, if you're really concerned about not exposing system log paths just mention it's been logged.
