RunSet··on Federal judge orders Texas to air condition all prisons by the end of 2029
Prisoners are in prison as punishment. Not for punishment.

That is a concept that eludes many.

RunSet··on Woman Arrested, Dragged Away After Speaking About Flock at City Council Meeting
> Yeah because addressing the city council with your middle fingers extended is totally mature and appropriate of adults.

I think by reaching adulthood, let alone public office, most people have seen middle fingers before. Moreover there is no statute against being in public bare-handed.

RunSet··on I said no and Apple said yes
I find my M2 Macbook Pro so much less pleasant to use than my x220 thinkpad (running Debian) that I only use the Macbook for CPU-bound activities to which the x220 thinkpad is unequal.

I find the Apple offering's keyboard worse to type on, its enormous touchpad is a chore to engage with compared to the venerable Trackpoint, and the operating system feels contrived to make simple things difficult.

The x220 thinkpad is 14 years old now. And has a 500 GB SSD and 16 GB RAM. Perhaps in another 14 years Apple will be able to match it feature for feature.

One might well ask why I own Apple hardware at all. The answer is to buy entry into their walled garden as a developer.

While the Sonic waterfall is probably deliberate, I find it more likely that people have always preferred the highest resolution and the crispest graphics they can afford.

RunSet··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
I understand why people value the code John Carmack has released but I do not understand why people value his public statements.

By sheer coincidence, John Carmack is peddling machine generated code.[2]

RunSet··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem

RunSet··on Decapitating a MacBook (2025)
Semi-related. I wonder why Mac OS does not provide any setting to keep the laptop running with the screen closed. You either need to use third party software or connect a dummy HDMI dongle. Both of which cost additional money for a function that is furnished as a matter of course by other operating systems.
RunSet··on Japan halves speed limit to 30km/h on all narrow city streets
> In traffic, energy used over a specific period of time (power) translates into speed. In this case, the critical quantum will appear as a speed limit. Wherever this limit has been passed, the basic pattern of social degradation by high energy quanta has emerged. Once some public utility went faster than 15 mph, equity declined and the scarcity of both time and space increased. Motorized transportation monopolized traffic and blocked self-powered transit.

>...

> From our limited information it appears that everywhere in the world, after some vehicle broke the speed barrier of 15 mph, time scarcity related to traffic began to grow. After industry had reached this threshold of per capita output, transport made of man a new kind of waif: a being constantly absent from a destination he cannot reach on his own but must attain within the day.

RunSet··on Paint.net 5.2 alpha now runs on Linux
Paint.net was originally MIT licensed but the author closed its source because people did not give him credit. Note: The MIT license does not require credit.

https://blog.paint.net/2007/12/04/freeware-authors-beware-of...

Paint.net likely still benefits from the announcement of "Open Source Alternative To Microsoft Paint" long after switching to a proprietary license, which I find more dubious than using MIT-licensed code without giving credit to the author.

Also I rather doubt a "clean-room reverse-engineered rewrite of Direct2D" can be "written by our good friend Claude, without whom this would NOT have been possible"?
