Rufbdbskrufb473··on The Anti-Ownership eBook Economy
I don't understand the reason for your sarcasm. In your original reply, were you not asking for an anonymous way to obtain Bitcoin, so that one could then use it to buy books?

My reply described how it's easily possible to convert USDT to fiat because I assumed it was obvious that the process is similar in both directions and can be done for any common form of crypto, including Bitcoin.

Rufbdbskrufb473··on The Anti-Ownership eBook Economy
What do you mean? As I mentioned, the reverse is just as easy.

You give then cash, they give you USDT or BTC. Now you can buy all the ebooks you want with anonymous crypto.

Rufbdbskrufb473··on The Anti-Ownership eBook Economy
There are plenty of anonymous (even decentralized) P2P market places for trading crypto for cash, bank transfers, or other agreed upon forms of payment.

I have over 2x my fiat savings in crypto and none of it could easily be traced to my real identity.

Just last week I walked into a random "crypto exchange service" in the city I was visiting and sold them USDT and walked out with $10k in cash. No kyc. They didn't even ask my name. They were buying and selling for only 0.5% commission.

Rufbdbskrufb473··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
It's really not. Growing up, I had plenty of classmates who spent more than that on superficial car modifications while working a minimum wage job and whose family was on food stamps.
Rufbdbskrufb473··on The death of self-driving cars is greatly exaggerated
It's not ridiculous. You need to consider the numbers involved. If one extra person breaks his leg because he didn't look and see the quiet car before crossing the street, that's a fair trade off for reducing the noise pollution for a million people.
Rufbdbskrufb473··on Health officials delayed report linking fluoride to brain harm
Sure, but to achieve equal remineralization, you'll likely end up ingesting orders of magnitude more fluoride when delivered via drinking water vs toothpaste.

What I don't understand is how they keep most freelancers on the platform after finding a client.

I've only used it once, but after having a call with the client, I felt comfortable accepting payment directly in crypto and not paying their fees.

Rufbdbskrufb473··on Passkeys: The beginning of the end of the password
Except you can no longer back up your private key, so you must trust a 3rd party to restore access when you lose the only allowed copy.
Rufbdbskrufb473··on Passkeys: The beginning of the end of the password
So can I set up a self-hosted solution?

I don't want to trust a 3rd party to be able to restore access to accounts after losing my phone. I've lost several Google and Yandex accounts that way. Despite knowing the passwords, they refused to let me log in again after loosing my phone.

I could be wrong, but I believe they were using a modified chroot with some preload libraries to intercept missing kernel calls.
Rufbdbskrufb473··on Why are lithium prices collapsing?
You just listed a bunch scary sounding financial buzz words, but I doubt that a thorough analysis of them would support your conclusion.

In fact, many have the opposite effect and result in more efficient price discovery. Take naked shorting for example. Without shorting, it would be far more difficult for an equity research firm to be incentivized to look into fraudulent stocks, as was widespread with Chinese companies a few years ago. Without their efforts, stock prices would have remained inflated for longer.

Is it important to you that your speech is tied to your physical identity?

Now that most communication takes place online, it seems the obvious solution is to say anything controversial via pseudonyms. As long as you don't get careless about protecting your true identity, that seems like something you can do just about anywhere.

I imagine they're trying to prevent the reverse, purchasing a cheap subscription in a developing country to use when you actually live in a more expensive country.

Probably not. There are terminals with surprisingly high latency, even on modern hardware.

See here for examples of ~100 ms of local latency: https://www.lkhrs.com/blog/2022/07/terminal-latency/

Rufbdbskrufb473··on Shutting down my legal torrent site after 17 years
Is there really a legal responsibility placed on an individual selling BTC for cash to verify the source of funds?

I assumed that wouldn't be necessary if not operating like a business with the intention to turn a profit. If I sold my car for cash, would I have the same responsibility?

Rufbdbskrufb473··on The EARN IT bill is back, seeking to scan our messages and photos
It depends what you value most. If you don't mind corruption, then in a lot of developing countries like SE Asia, you can have a huge amount of personal freedom by paying the (relatively cheap) occasional bribe.

If you're morally opposed to that, I'd recommend Singapore for its financial freedoms. After working there for a year, I was initially opposed to such an authoritarian government, but they're one of the rare ones who use their power to run their country very efficiently and keep out of the way of private enterprise.

It you live in a big city, it's easy enough to find someone to meet in person and exchange crypto for $1-10k cash a few % below the market rate. Some will even pay above market rate if you can do $100k+.

I don't want government agencies involved in dictating the minutia of acceptable UI design for a private website.

Businesses have brand reputations. Just let people vote with their wallets. That won't discourage all dark patterns, but is preferable to a world of over-regulation.

Rufbdbskrufb473··on Choose Your Weapon: Survival Strategies for Depressed AI Academics
Why?

Isn't most ethical behavior driven by self-interest? We want to follow general principles that promote respecting those who are similar to us in the hope that others follow the same principles when interacting with us.

AI is too dissimilar for us to worry about whether its "mistreatment" would make it more likely for others to start mistreating ourselves.

I'm not sure to what you're referring by "your own token", but most do offer a range of popular tokens by using one of the 3rd party payment providers like Coingate.

I had paid for my servers with some Litecoin I have that I usually use for small purchases because of the low fees.

Servers and domains are one of the easiest things to buy with crypto.

I actually just migrated away from Hetzner last week (for unrelated reasons) to two new providers to whom I'm paying crypto (no KYC required) based on this list: https://bitcoin-vps.com/

The data plans in most developing countries are actually quite good.

For example, the best overall plan I've used anywhere in the world is in Thailand. You can get unlimited 10Mbit service for $5 a month. The coverage is extremely good even in the mountains or islands, latency is excellent, and I've used over 100 GB without hitting any additional throttles. And that's with AIS. There are cheaper companies and plans if you wanted.

Rufbdbskrufb473··on Barnes and Noble's surprising turnaround
I think the main reason isn't the shelter itself, but that being around a large number of fellow homeless people is dangerous because of the rampant mental health issues, drug abuse, and violent crime.

The problem is similar to what happened when low income housing (the "projects") concentrated the poor into economic ghettos.

Rufbdbskrufb473··on Barnes and Noble's surprising turnaround
> Because the less well off may not have enough devices or internet access to do things digitally.

Is that really still true? I've traveled in many poor counties where people live in shacks with no plumbing, yet still all have internet connected smartphones. Only in the most remote villages with no electricity or phone signal are people still truly disconnected.
