Rotor··on Amazon announces candidate cities for HQ2
Los Angeles (i.e. Hollywood) could be a strategic move given Amazon's massive push in original series and programming via Amazon Studios. Also, shares a coast with Seattle.
Rotor··on Ethereum programming for web developers
Thanks for sharing, also the Solidity Smart Contract are not bad for getting started: https://solidity.readthedocs.io/en/develop/introduction-to-s...

Also for anyone starting Ethereum or Blockchain development, I'd recommend learning and understanding The DAO Attack of 2016: https://www.coindesk.com/understanding-dao-hack-journalists/

Rotor··on A Hole in Mars
This is fascinating, especially whether the hole was created from a top impact or from the bottom such as volcanic eruption.

On another note, why are we discovering this just now? I was under the amateur impression that the entire surface of Mars was scanned and imaged by NASA at some point. But again, I may have interpreted that incorrectly.

Rotor··on Show HN: Firebase, a scalable real-time backend
I don't think they are trying to hide anything per se, the company grew from envolve.com. Seems to be pretty open here http://www.firebase.com/about.html

They'll probably remove the whois protection once they fully launch.

Rotor··on Show HN: Firebase, a scalable real-time backend
Congrats on the launch of Firebase and absolutely love the code demo; it hooks you in.

At the end of the demo you are asked if you'd like early access. Definitely.

Rotor··on NLP Class is live
Finally! This class was supposed to start in January 2012, hopefully all the technical kinks are worked out. Does anyone know what the issue was? I believe all the Stanford online learning classes were affected.
Rotor··on We started requiring code reviews for everything, and my head hasn't exploded
Even if it's a small change, consider a code review. At the very least it's a sanity check.

Not surprisingly, the seemingly minor changes can have just as devastating results in production as the major ones.

Rotor··on Google's cloud-based machine learning tools
It's great to see these tools available on a cloud computing basis. Just make sure you read the ToS:

1.2. From Customer to Google. By submitting, posting or displaying any Customer Data on or through the Service, Customer gives Google a worldwide, non-sublicensable, non-transferable, non-exclusive, terminable, limited license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Customer Data for the sole purpose of enabling Google to provide Customer with the Service in accordance with the Agreement.

Rotor··on MusicForProgramming();
Personally I enjoy minimal electronic music while coding. It fits nicely into the background while still sounding interesting.

This site has some good minimal mixes http://deepmix.eu/

Rotor··on Skype founders gunning for Netflix with Vdio
This could be an optimal moment for a Netflix competitor to step in given Netflix's recent issues.

Vdio will probably have the same content licensing and windowing issues. Not an easy hurdle to overcome.

Rotor··on OpenClassroom: Free video courses from Stanford University
Personally I don't see the video format being a huge drawback, although having the in-video quizzes in HTML5 would be fantastic for tablets. It makes it convenient to learn the content and there is always the ff/rewind buttons. You can take notes.

These remote learning classes from Standford are somewhat new and there is some experimentation taking place, I would rather not see these classes be canceled due to lack of attendance.

All-in-all a great experience, I hope more universities follow suit in this open style of teaching.

Rotor··on Why "A + B ! = A - (-B)"?
The title is actually: Why A + B != A - (-B)

not: Why A + B = A - (-B)

Rotor··on Java.sun.com is down - breaking builds across the land
Yes, a known and sad fact many java static files have hardcoded URIs to java.sun.com.

Stupid hack: add a java.sun.com DNS entry on the build server to point to local and host the static files on the build server.

Rotor··on Steve Jobs has passed away.
Steve Jobs said he wanted to make a dent in the universe. I'd say he achieved that, he fundamentally changed the world of technology. What an amazing journey and legacy to leave behind. Rest in peace Steve.
Rotor··on Logstalgia (aka ApachePong) - a website access log visualization
When running multi-threaded it would be visually interesting to see multiple paddles mapped to threads responding to requests.
Rotor··on Bitbucket now rocks Git
Great to see bitbucket expanding the offering.

A while back I had chosen bitbucket over GitHub because of the free private repository. And Git was not an absolute requirement, non-Git source control was absolutely fine.

GitHub still does not offer a private repo for free (currently private is $7/month), I imagine this may change at some point soon now.

Rotor··on Write your app in HTML5, upload it and get back app-store ready apps
Very curious to see how they implement this tool.

I would think there would have to be some type of "compiler hints" for particular app device builds.

Rotor··on Natural Language Processing with Python
I'm glad to see this NLP book available online for free. Some great knowledge in there.
Rotor··on AVOS’ Delicious Disaster: Lessons from a Complete Failure
Argh, very frustrating indeed. Yet another good reason to backup your online account data. Just because it's hosted externally by a "trustworthy" company doesn't mean your data will always be there.
Rotor··on AVOS’ Delicious Disaster: Lessons from a Complete Failure
Did you migrate your Delicious account to AVOS previous to the move?
Rotor··on AVOS’ Delicious Disaster: Lessons from a Complete Failure
I'm not referring to the new Delicious changes but the actual release itself, users still cannot login or retrieve passwords (including myself).

I've been over at the beta blog trying to get answers and judging by the amount of major issues, this does not look like a well planned release: http://deliciousengineering.blogspot.com/

Rotor··on Why I Go Home: A Developer Dad's Manifesto
This is a great article about work/life balance. Frequently that balance is asymmetrically weighted in favor of work at the expense of time spent with family.

The author is making a commendable point to commit to time well spent with his family while still putting in nine hours at the office.

When we're near the end of our lives and reflecting, are you going to wish you spent more time with your family or more time at the office? There's a simple answer there.

Rotor··on Apple's brand value rises to No. 2 in the world, after Google
What's actually more interesting in this report is the current economic effects on 'Brand USA', which is now at a 10 year low.
Rotor··on Raise Your Hand If You’re Still Using Google+
I was using Google+ within about a week of the open beta. I was excited to use it in a way similar to Twitter, the circles feature is definitely great there.

Then they shut down my account due to the full name policy. I never went back or attempted to reactivate my account. I am not going to use Google+ if the name policy is in effect. Twitter does not require a full name.

Rotor··on Blippy 404 page
That's a great 404. Woohoo triple rainbow! It can be done if you click long enough. I feel happy now.
