RossM··on Weird thing happening when touching a Nexus 5 and a MacBook
I've seen the opposite happen - the MacBook screen turning off - when placing an open macbook on top of a closed one. I'm guessing that case is to do with magnets activating the closed-sensor.

I've replicated this with a Nexus 6 by placing it over the speakers of an MBP (it locks the screen, rather than turning it off) which also suggests magnetic? I'm thinking Motorola planned a Nexus 6 case similar to the Galaxy Note flip cover.

RossM··on I need a product
So, git hooked up to inotify?
RossM··on Why do pub TVs have a pint glass in the corner?
Here's an example: http://up.metropol247.co.uk/davidlees/daybreak_sky_sports.pn...
RossM··on Running Arbitrary Executables in AWS Lambda
They announced at the London summit that Java support in Lambda would be launching soon; it sounds like they're aiming to support lots of languages.
RossM··on Why I killed my standing desk
Aching in the balls of my feet is the most common pain I get. I've tried using a soft mat which had no effect compared to a hard floor. It seems to be down to footwear - running trainers can be fine for several hours but with converse flats I'll barely last 2.
RossM··on GWT just got a new look
I was seeing it as gee-wit. jwit also comes to mind.

Not that I have any stake in it, but the most confusing thing to me is that it doesn't mention the words "Google Web Toolkit" until the Tutorial page. It's an abbreviation; one that describes the product quite well (a toolkit for web apps, built by Google). Silly to bury it.

RossM··on The God Login
It might be nice to do it client-side.

    var caps = null;
    passwordField.onkeypress = function(e) {
        if (caps !== false) {
            var s = String.fromCharCode(e.keyCode || e.which);
            caps = s.toUpperCase() == s && !e.shiftKey;
        }
    };
    loginForm.onsubmit = function(e) {
        if (caps) {
            passwordField.value = invertCase(passwordField.value);
        }
    };
RossM··on How Britain Exported Next-Generation Surveillance
Got a source on the face-recognition-after-departure? That's a really interesting idea and I'd like to read more.
RossM··on Show HN: PHP Code Generator – A scaffolding framework
Scaffolding in terms of code templates, rather than data model scaffolding.
RossM··on Panda 4: Display HN, Product Hunt, GitHub at the Same Time
My complaint about the Chrome extension would be that it hijacks the New Tab Page. I'd quite like to use it as a Chrome app though.
RossM··on PHP 7's new hashtable implementation
I've found one use-case for mixed-keys: parsing complex headers. For example:

    Link: <http://cdn.example.com/stylesheet.css>; rel=stylesheet; type=text/css

    [
      [0] => <http://cdn.example.com/stylesheet.css>
      [rel] => stylesheet
      [type] => text/css
    ]
It doesn't come up very often.
RossM··on Ask HN: Are you voting?
In UK elections they do announce the number of spoiled ballots, which might give indication of the number of "neither" votes.
RossM··on What Is Google Chrome Helper, and Why Is It Hogging My CPU Cycles?
Same, often a few with one crashed.
RossM··on Twitpic blocking archive team from backing up pictures
It's possible they've made a last ditch deal to sell the media to someone (perhaps even Twitter). That would make it important to keep the data private.
RossM··on New Tube for London
The sub-surface lines (Circle, District, Hammersmith&City) are getting new stock (same sort of features - walk-through carriages, little bit taller). In the past few years automation was introduced on Victoria, Northern, Jubilee and I think Piccadilly lines that basically reduces the driver's role to opening and closing doors and emergency stops. This allows trains to run at higher speeds with less delay between seeing a signal and starting the engine.
RossM··on New Tube for London
Coming from South London, it seems like every train is on the Bank branch (I have to change at Kennington 9 times out of 10).
RossM··on New Tube for London
One of the side effects is that it allows people to queue in the right spot (rather than guessing and lining the platform) which helps even out the number of people trying to get in one set of doors. Adding a bit of predictability helps streamline things.
RossM··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2014)
CrowdReactive (http://crowdreactive.com) - Junior Developer, London, UK

We build http://eventstagr.am/, a social media wall platform. As well as our self-service customers, we build tailored designs and animations for big names, including O2, Ferrari and Heineken. Our London team are soon moving into brand new offices on South Bank, including free coffee and beer on tap.

We're looking for a full-time junior developer, to handle some smaller tasks across our web app as well as larger frontend projects. Technical requirements are loosely:

- You know enough PHP to write basic OOP, - You've used frontend tools like bootstrap, grunt/gulp and less.

More information on our blog: http://blog.eventstagr.am/2014/08/juniordeveloperjob/

RossM··on Halfbike
Attach a desk and it becomes a productivity mobility platform.
RossM··on AWS issues unavoidable reboot schedules with short notice on many EC2 instances
I have an instance listed as scheduled for reboot in 2 days but haven't received an email. Without this post I'd have been caught out on Saturday wondering why I'm getting a ton of message queue connection errors.

Downtime I can live with, but unreported planned downtime? Not impressed.

RossM··on iPhone 6 Plus bending in pockets
Flags or moderator intervention. I wouldn't call it targeted for this site.
RossM··on Show HN: Sound in front of YouTube for mp3
I'm sure I've read something in the ICANN rules that says domains containing a trademark can be petitioned against (although that may only be for exact wording). If they can do it, Google aren't exercising the right to it as there are other domains that have been around longer.
RossM··on Poll: How long have you been a member of HN?
I seem to remember stumbling upon Startup News, and then the next day it had changed it's name. Bit of a shock to find out that was 7 years ago.
RossM··on Linux Laptop Recommendations
Does anyone have any recommendations for a 10-11 inch netbook for ultra portable hacking? It's rather hard to find places that still sell them nowadays (lots of tablet-a-likes with a keyboard attached). Basically going to be a vim-box.

RossM··on Sublevel – A personal network
I like the advertising strategy - one unobtrusive ad for everyone, for a whole week. The free charity ads are a nice touch too.

It's either going to stick in your head out of persistence (perhaps subconsciously) or get mentally blocked (though I'd bet on the former).

RossM··on Next major release of PHP to be named PHP 7
Annoyingly, a few authors decided to jump the gun and publish books around PHP 6. I think this was the main deciding point. On the one hand, it might be confusing for a newcomer who thinks that they're getting a book on the latest and greatest; on the other, perhaps they should check publication dates.

Either way, it wasn't a particularly important decision - any number signifying a major version bump, greater than 5, would have been fine.

RossM··on Parsing PHP in Go
It's not an interpreter - it parses PHP code into an abstract-syntax-tree (list of entities like open-if, variable, assignment, etc).
RossM··on Show HN: Please Don't Rob Me
Perhaps this could be better used as a heuristic for delivery companies to select a delivery time?
RossM··on HP’s fanless Chromebox has a noisy fan inside
In context, he never says it's fanless. He mentions the properties that fanless designs bring - thin, don't hear a fan, don't see a fan, cool to the touch - and then explains how the Surface Pro 3 incorporates those properties, with a fan. For all the consumer would know, it was fanless as it shares those properties with literally-fanless devices.
