Rodeoclash··on Ask HN: Which movies did you watch multiple times?
If you want a few random insights into LOTR I was an extra in it back when it was being filmed. I captured a bunch of thoughts / memories and random recollections into a video:

https://customer-yttq5m392rsx80xb.cloudflarestream.com/a44ff...

I'm not YouTube personality so it's pretty rough (I also couldn't upload it to YouTube because of all the footage, hence the CloudFlare link). Anyway, you might like some of my random anecdotes from it.

Rodeoclash··on Show HN: Product Hunt for Music
Out of all the ways discovering music, surprisingly Soundcloud has been the best. Being able to curate a list of DJs in various genres means that I'm constantly finding new music by being exposed to what they're putting in their sets.

It's kind of a meta music discovery, I can piggy back off others who have tastes that I like.

The biggest benefit of this is that I don't necessarily get recommendations of music that's adjacent to what I already like. In other words, if I like Depeche Mode, I don't want to listen to bands that sound vaguely like them.

What I've yet to see someone do, is track what music someone listens to after listening to a song. Often when I hear a piece of music, it makes me want to listen to something else that feels the same way or reminds me of being in similar place in time. A music recommendation engine based of this concept would be interesting.

Rodeoclash··on Show HN: OSS Auth0 Alternative Ory Kratos Now with Full PassKey Support
Happy self hosted Ory user here, thank you for building out.

Has the process around customising the UI improved recently? That was by far the biggest pain point for me when setting it up.

Rodeoclash··on ChatTTS-Best open source TTS Model
Agreed. In fact a great example of this is the Blood Meridian audio book where each of the characters seems to get a distinct "voice" despite being narrated by a single person.

You can find it on YouTube easily if you want an example.

Rodeoclash··on I spent a year and $5,700 to see if ChatGPT can beat the market (S&P 500)
Why am I not surprised that the AI is going all in on the company that produces the hardware that it runs on.
Rodeoclash··on Google's AI is that stupid, feeds people answers from The Onion
Agreed. I would extend this and say that we are so enamored by the "humanness" that they exhibit that we're collectively losing our minds over them.

I think this stems from the part of our brain that lights up when an animal (or in this case a machine) exhibits humanlike behaviour. Crows counting out loud, parrots that understand the concept of 0 and chimpanzees that are using stone age tools all give us the same reaction. LLMs have dialled this response up to 11.

What's going to get us first? The climate change or the AGI with all the safe guards removed. Tune in over the next few decades (years?) to find out!
Rodeoclash··on Noi: an AI-enhanced, customizable browser
Yep, and Microsoft does exactly the same thing. I have an open source video review tool for esports teams that I give away. On both Windows and Apple I'm expected to pay a yearly tax (~$200 on Windows from memory) to distribute my software on that platform. The owners of these platforms make no allowance for open source authors to distribute without that fee.

This is done in the name of "security", as if malware authors couldn't afford to pay it.

They're better as a cooking apple rather than directly eating them. Try making an apple crumble with granny smith apples next time and you'll notice that the sourness of the apple naturally offsets the sugar in the dessert.

This is available in some of the current FPS trainers, they often have a time scaling feature which will slow the target down.

It's not strictly for counterstrike but works with any captured video from games.

Microsoft needs to learn the meaning of consent. They're the software equivalent of a creepy guy in a bar offering "back massages" (i.e. Bing) to every girl he talks to.

"Would you like a back massage baby?" (Not now / Ask again in one week)

Rodeoclash··on Google asks me daily for my location to improve connectivity even if I say no
Exactly. Imagine if you're at a bar and someone is constantly asking if they can take you home.

We need to treat consent on the computer exactly the same way.

Rodeoclash··on Xiaomi bets big on its new electric vehicle – targets 20M premium users
After using a Xiaomi phone, I wouldn't touch a Xioami car with a ten foot pole.
Rodeoclash··on Auth0 OSS alternative Ory Kratos now with passwordless and SMS support
This is a massive release, well done! I run Kratos and Oathkeeper self hosted on ECS for our onboarding app (Xero only in Australia for now I'm afraid, xonboard.com.au). Works like a dream for the most part.

One thing which was very painful was adapting the custom UI. I started with an existing example project and adapted it but it was a confusing mix of server code and CSS in JS which made it very difficult to "get at" some of the HTML / CSS.

Any movement on that front with the project?

Rodeoclash··on Show HN: Host a planet-scale geocoder for $10/mo
Ignore the haters here. What you've built is cool and you're rightly proud of it.
Rodeoclash··on Show HN: A platform for remote piano lessons based on the Web MIDI API
The thing is, all pianos feel different. It's one of the downsides of the instrument is that you often end up having to play whatever piano is at the event (barring the aforementioned digital pianos that are portable).

If all you have is a digital keyboard, don't let that stop you for learning it!

Rodeoclash··on Latest ChatGPT 4 System prompt (1,700 tokens)
Great comment. I'll bet the the poster you replied to likely also works in software engineering (based on them being on this site) - a role dominated by women only a few decades ago.

I sometimes feel that Hacker News embodies the idea of having an 18 in INT and about a 4 in WIS.
