40 years later I had a random call from his brother and asked about his sub dream. Turns out he not only built one, he built an entire company and his company has been building the SportSub for over 30 years now. Several hundred of them exist.
If I had 93000 USD laying around I might get one too.
Never stop dreaming.
THEN add on the fact that there's a one in a million chance your plane may open up and accidentally cast you into the abyss and I say, just give me a car, my snacks, my music, my full seat, and the ability to stop and use the washroom when I want and Im good to drive across the country. Flying bites.
Fascinated by that toy growing up, I credit it to a large part with having a very good grasp of basic engineering. Levers, pulleys, wheels, axles, gear ratios, bracing, structural integrity, load dynamics... all learned by doing while still in elementary school. There aren't many toys that can teach those skills on a screen, not like building and testing actual equipment.
I will pass it on down to one of my grandkids some day and hope they grow up loving engineering and creating mechanical dreams like I did.
On the flip side, Im quite impressed that Musk has actually delivered any at all. I fully expected him to say the truck was not buildable, but he has defied the odds and actually built them. Well, 10 of them that we know of anyway. He gets full credit for tenacity and giving his detractors the middle finger, which seems to be his superpower.
I do think the CT will remain controversial - and quite rare. Which will be just fine for most of its tech bro owners. They didnt just want an electric truck or they would have already gone out and bought a Rivian, the Lightning or even a Hummer. They want a shiny stainless steel gadgety CyberTruck. Because that's what tech bros like. To each his own.
Btw, the only feature that actually surprised me was the 240v outlet in the truck bed. Didnt think it would have that. Other features like 4 wheel steering were already available from Mazda and Honda's in the 1980's although they never considered a desirable feature due to the added complexity and cost. And I will say the rear view camera being on the center screen seems like a significant BACKWARD step for safety compared to an actual rear view mirror - taking something that works perfectly well and changing it to something thats actually viewed down and inside the cabin instead of in your line of forward sight seems highly questionable. But thats the CT for ya - make it techy because its cooler even if its less safe.
I guess it does distribute placement of components but in essence it seems to be a fancier version of a CV joint. Very cool, but I dont see the ground breaking revolution in drive systems.
The next result is that I noticed I became less argumentative in real life and tend to keep my opinions to myself more, all in all much appreciated by those I love. And my mental health is better.
The next result is that in going back occasionally to scroll through reddit it seems MUCH more obvious to me that almost every post is designed to incite anger, controversy or judgment. It didnt feel nearly that obvious before.
And there are some clear indications that bots are running rampant. Especially r/AITA (Am I The Asshole) where EVERY post is now almost exactly the same length, written about some situation that is quite stupid or rage inducing that its hard to believe that anyone would bother to respond. But they do. Im guessing they have an intern pounding away at ChatGPT for 10 minutes to create the next 100 AITA's
Lastly, Ive migrated to tildes.com, and much smaller community where I was/am startled to see that people can communicate politely even when they disagree and rage baiting does not exist. Its not nearly as busy as reddit was and the topics are far more limited but the quality is miles above the poor posts that now permeate reddit.
I'm pretty sure there's an uber dystopian horror movie in there somewhere.
Most of the younger teachers fell for the fad with limited results. The 'old school' teacher consistently produced a class of kids who were reading proficiently by the end of the year, while other classes struggled with that success rate.
If they were caught playing on them or if it rang during class, the phone went to the teacher's desk til the end of class. If it happened a second time, it came to my office til the end of the day. And a 3rd violation meant it stayed in my office til the end of the week.
That last one rarely happened as any child who lost access for a whole day nearly went into panic mode without their pacifier for an entire day.
Democracy is dying by a thousand cuts.
Utterly unacceptable!
Aptera is facing the same challenge. The concept is fantastic. Its got amazing engineering and unlike the Squad its a highly designed, efficient machine. But finding funders is the hard part.
Its the hard part for every start up. Which is why EV startups fail at nearly 100% rate.
Yup I have to register and insure it but its ridiculously low cost compared to everything else.
Why? Because unless there is rigid control over who is allowed to input and some verification of that input, there will be an influx of garbage comments that will make the site completely useless. Much like YELP reviews, you can read 'em but do you actually trust what they say? Is the submitter an actual tenant, the landlord, or the landlord's family and friends? Who knows?
Secondly, I think a single lawsuit may bring it down. There have been similar private sites for tenant information that landlords shared among themselves that have been shut down by the privacy commissioner. My understanding is that this site is going to try and anonymize certain data, but Im not sure how its going to hold useful data and anonymize it enough to make a landlord unidentifiable at the same time.
Yes, everyone has a bad landlord story. But every landlord has quite a few bad tenant stories. If this site flies, prepare for the same to be done for tenants.
And what was the gov's response? An even greater swing toward authoritarianism - the Canadian government literally locked people out of their own bank accounts, seized property and arrested and charged hundreds.
Incredible. Absolutely incredible. The anger is still palpable. And its going to simmer til our current gov is replaced.
I saw this in the school I led, especially in young girls. One of them starts cutting, suddenly we have multiple girls cutting. One of them struggles with bulimia, suddenly the guidance counselor is reporting that she has an inordinate number of girls coming in for counselling about bulimia.
I dont think its any different with claiming to be transgender. And my current school counselor contact confirms that - for every one child she sees that she believes may actually struggle with body dysmorphia and she believes may be trans, there are 10 more coming in because its the 'thing' to be. These are usually kids who are troubled and are desperately seeking attention and care, legit needs, but going about it the only way they see that's acceptable. They gain attention, they gain power, and in an odd way, status among their peers for 'being who they are.'
Last trip Enterprise was fully booked so I did try Budget. Their office is so small that you actually have to arrive at our local airport and THEN call the attendant who comes in from her house to book out your car. That took almost an hour.
The return process is even sillier. Write your mileage on a poorly photocopied slip of paper, and drop it on her desk with the keys. No pics. No checkout inspection, just 'trust us not to charge you extra'.
Fortunately I took a ton of pictures including the odometer so when they couldnt do math and tried to charge me an extra 1000 km, I fought back with pics and got those charges dropped. That's the last time I use Budget.
Little Johnny, with his poor spelling and grammar, does not suddenly turn in an excellent paper with exemplary grammar, spelling and punctuation. So unless they teach computers how to screw up in the exactly the same way that Johnny does every time he writes a sentence, any teacher worth his salt is going to know it's not his work.
As for those with excellent writing skills, well, they have less need to cheat but even they would be sussed out with in class essays and assignments.
