RichardCNormos··on California’s Rap Lyrics Bill Becomes State Law
We're not against rap, we're not against rappers, but we are against those thugs...
RichardCNormos··on Office vacancy rate in San Francisco just hit a new high
Absolutely. Low-income housing is the perfect use for all this extra office space. San Francisco has a problem where the low-income people who work to serve high-income people can't afford to live in the city that they work in.

Converting office space into affordable housing is a win for everyone, except the landlords, but I won't shed a tear for them ;-)

RichardCNormos··on Jq Implementation of Jq
jq as a project should be re-named. In white supremacist circles, "JQ" is an antisemitic dog whistle (it stands for "Jewish Question").
RichardCNormos··on Does cashless society discriminate against the poor and elderly? (2019)
You only have to look as far as Canada to see this in action. Canada leveraged banks for political revenge this year: https://yesithappened.substack.com/p/canada-froze-bank-accou...
RichardCNormos··on UberEats Adds Weed Delivery to App in Toronto
This isn't an innovation. My dealer did this in the '90s.
RichardCNormos··on Washington Needs to Tax Empty Homes. and Its Cities Should, Too
This emotional rationale is what enabled the Boomer generation's near-complete regulatory capture of the real estate market.
RichardCNormos··on Washington Needs to Tax Empty Homes. and Its Cities Should, Too
Permits to build, permits to remodel, taxes for simply existing year-over-year, taxes for having too few people living in the house... is there a limit to how far government will go to control what people can and cannot do with their own property?
RichardCNormos··on Kanye West to acquire free speech platform Parler
If he'd said it about whites, nobody would care. It looks like Black Twitter is noticing, too.
RichardCNormos··on What happens when race is everything
> "Stop turning public life into a brutal struggle of group against group."

Excuse me, NYT, but you were entirely complicit in, if not a driving force of, the recent racial enmity in the United States.

RichardCNormos··on CDC’s raw v-safe data obtained by ICAN
In college, I had a pretty based statistics professor who said: "a skilled statistician can make the data tell whatever story his employers want". I chose not to pursue statistics as a career after that.
RichardCNormos··on Cloak: Censorship Circumvention Tool
The vast majority of censorship today happens server-side, not in the transport layer.
RichardCNormos··on Weber Shandwick provides PR for Moderna and Pfizer, while staffing the CDC
Calling people "anti-science" is something of a canard, a trick of speech designed to belittle and demean anyone who questions the validity of current research.

I might add that "the science" was consistently wrong about many things during the pandemic.

Here is a collection of scientific gymnastics: https://yesithappened.substack.com/p/a-collection-of-insane-...

RichardCNormos··on Small molecule cognitive enhancer reverses age-related memory decline in mice
I, too, keep my specifics in the pedantry.
RichardCNormos··on [dead]
Cocaine addiction develops with a horrifying efficiency. Cocaine users are much more prone to violence than marijuana users. This is a bad idea.

Source: lived experience.

RichardCNormos··on “Women are wonderful” effect
My ex-wife used to physically abuse me (hitting, throwing things). An attorney friend told me to leave the house whenever that happened, because if anyone called the cops (including me), the police would arrest me instead of her. It's called the "Duluth Model" of domestic violence enforcement.
RichardCNormos··on “Women are wonderful” effect
What does it mean to be "well-behaved"?
RichardCNormos··on Apple is quietly pushing a TV ad product with media agencies
The Pirate Bay has all the seasons. Even with the hassle of starting my VPN, downloading, making sure it's in the right format, dealing with subtitles (looking at you, Better Call Saul), piracy is a better experience than fragmented streaming.
RichardCNormos··on “I spend $600/mo taking women out for dinner”: Do men always have to pay?
Before I got married, I would always offer my dates a gamble when the check came: both of us put our cards down, and the waiter chooses one behind their back. That person pays for dinner.

I've never had a date refuse, and in the long run, I came out ahead (better than 50/50). It's egalitarian, sporting, and adds some excitement to a failing date.

RichardCNormos··on Elon Musk, Jason Calacanis on return-to-office mandates as ‘gentlemen’s layoff’
This smells of "old, entrenched interests fighting against a disruptive innovation". Remote work is the future for the tech industry. Whether or not the current generation of leaders want to believe it is immaterial. We've proven that it works, and that many people prefer it.

- Someone who works remotely and will never live in an urban pod, or waste my time on a commute, ever again.

RichardCNormos··on Gmail 2FA causes the homeless to permanently lose access 3 times a year
My city government here in California calls them "people who live outside".
RichardCNormos··on Gmail 2FA causes the homeless to permanently lose access 3 times a year
The government doesn't need copies of my communications living on their servers.
RichardCNormos··on Can God Be Proved Mathematically?
Oh, the logicians are at it again :-)

I was agnostic for my young life, but as an undergrad, found God in mathematics (specifically algebra and analysis). Now I go to church regularly.

As an algebraist, I don't have the gall to assume I could prove God's existence. I guess that's why I was never fit to be a logician.

RichardCNormos··on Jack Dorsey plans to build 'Web5' based on Bitcoin
I thought that one of the Hacker News commentary tenets was "Don't shit all over other peoples' work." Except if it's crypto-related? Sheesh.

Jack Dorsey is a pretty successful fellow. He sees centralization as a real problem, and is making an effort to solve it. Antagonize all you want, Jack Dorsey is doing.

RichardCNormos··on More than half of Silicon Valley residents want to leave: The mood is darkening
I did the same and haven't looked back. I can take a walk without wandering through a sketchy bum colony. The streets aren't lined with RVs. My property tax is in the single-digit thousands of dollars.

I was able to get a concealed carry permit, but ironically, I only carry when I have to travel back to the Bay Area.

RichardCNormos··on UK Plans for Three-Hour Power Blackouts in Event of Gas Shortages
PG&E, our regulated monopoly electrical utility, turns the power off during hot, windy days during the summer so that they can avoid liability for starting wildfires. They never maintained their equipment, so it fails and starts massive fires.
RichardCNormos··on UK Plans for Three-Hour Power Blackouts in Event of Gas Shortages
Or, if you live in California. 3 hours is nothing! A while ago, we went for a week without power in the northern part of the state.
RichardCNormos··on Pessimism is a barrier to progress
You're being downvoted severely for going against current leftist orthodoxy, but you should know that a lot of us out here agree with you.
RichardCNormos··on Feds seized $311M in Bitcoin, then hacker stole it back
It's not immediately clear to me that this is illegal. If anything, the Feds didn't "seize" the Bitcoin, they forcibly acquired a license to the wallet's private key. If they didn't understand that the license was non-exclusive, well, that's not the fault of the other licensees.
RichardCNormos··on Biden proposes new “Bill of Rights” to protect Americans from AI snooping
"The blueprint is a set of non-binding guidelines—or suggestions—providing a 'national values statement' and a toolkit to help lawmakers and businesses build the proposed protections into policy and products."

This is performative governance, not material policymaking.

RichardCNormos··on Publishers Lose Their Shit After Authors Push Back on Their Attack on Libraries
This level of hatred and vitriol is curious. Why are you so angry at people you simply don't agree with?
