Ricapar··on Hate Parking Tickets? Fixed Fights Them In Court For You
I've seen this idea before, and it is common in the trucking/delivery business. Cops/meter maids/etc take advantage over delivery trucks who park in front of businesses to quickly load and unload merchandise, especially in large cities.

I know a few people who work at such companies, and they all have some sort of subscription service with a third party that handles all these parking tickets for them. If they lose, they pay the ticket, nothing else. If the company wins, they pay a percentage of what the ticket was.

To give you an idea of what type of advantage cops take over these drivers.. There are a few streets in NYC that a friend's company makes deliveries to. The cops know the delivery schedules, are make sure to be there on time, dropping off the ticket pretty much as the vehicle parks. One of the drivers confronted the ticketing cop once, only to be shrugged off with: "What do you care? You're not the one paying for it."

I'm glad to see this come as a service to the general public. There's some hope that with enough people fighting bogus tickets, someone will eventually get the message and stop handing them out so casually.

Ricapar··on GoDaddy ends support for Ruby as of 23/01/2014
My thoughts exactly. Most people cringe at using GoDaddy as a registrar.

Using them for hosting your site? Double-cringe.

Ricapar··on FreeNAS 9.2 is out
Very nice build there! Question though: Have you measured how much power it consumes when idle and when under load?

That's been my main thing holding me back from building a beefed up home server/NAS box. Friend of mine used to have an all-in-one HTPC/NAS/webserver box that would put close to $30 a month on his electricity bill. (Although you could argue he needed to run the heater less as a result..)

Ricapar··on Operators and Meta-operators in Perl 6
I work in a group that manages a large amount of Solaris, AIX, and Linux servers, of varying versions.

When I'm writing scripts that can be run on any given system, there are very few things I can use that I know will work. One of those is Perl (5.8.8) and the other is Korn Shell (ksh).

Ricapar··on Images Now Showing in Gmail
I kinda like this. More often than not, I never click the "Display Images" link because I know doing so will essentially feed information back to the people who sent the email (the fact that I opened it, my geoIP location, browser, etc). I've been fine with a slightly degraded and less pretty email experience in order to give me some extra privacy and keep my information out of marketer's systems.

With this I guess I can see emails with all the images and other goodies without that worry. Works for me.

On the other hand... There's a good chance Google is caching all this now. But seeing as they're running the mail system I don't feel like it's too major of an intrusion beyond what they already have.

Ricapar··on How AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast are working together to screw you
It's all in the wording.

You're not paying $30 extra to opt-out. They're giving you a $30 discount for you to hand over your data.

It's the same way gas stations get away with "charging extra" for credit. Most credit card vendor agreements do not allow the merchant to pass along the 3% or whatever fee to the customer. So what the gas stations do instead is give you a "cash discount".

Who comes up with these ideas? I can't even picture a somewhat educated group of people, sitting around a board room table, thinking that this is a remotely good idea.

Yeah. No. Goodbye.

I would love to have all my records all in one place.

But why in the world would I want to share my high blood pressure/high cholesterol/chicken pox/herpes/aids etc. checkups with my friends and family?

Any word on if I can stream whatever is on my Android screen to this?

There are many times where I have pics on my phone (either via the phone's camera, or Picasa, G+, etc) that I want to show people at home - but there's no easy way to show them without having to pass around a tiny screen.

Ricapar··on How Gmail’s New Inbox Is Affecting Open Rates
For some reason, this paragraph irked me more than it should have:

   If the subscriber has tabs but they didn’t opt
   to include the Promotions tab, Gmail will deliver
   to Primary instead. That’s good news. Other than
   that, we’re definitely testing the new inbox and
   trying to figure out how it works. My sense is that
   Gmail wants all marketing email to go to the
   Promotions tab. Even if we did find a tricky way
   into the Primary tab, they’re smart over there,
   and they’d more than likely address any reasonable
   workaround.
The Promotions tab is there so I don't have to see your emails. The fact that you straight-up claim to try to bypass that makes me put you on the same level as the V1agra spammers in my mind.

I'll skim my Promotions tab when I want to. Stay out of my primary inbox.

Ricapar··on Is This The Future of The Airline Website?
This is what I want when I'm looking to plan a trip. Notice I said "trip", not flight. Usually I don't care about my method of travel, I just want to get from A to B to C in an efficient and affordable manner.

I live in Central NJ. Nearby me are several Amtrak and NJ Transit stations and three major airports (EWR, JFK, and LGA). I have a car that can take me to any of those places. I also have friedns that could drop me off at any of those places as well. Plenty of options to depart from.

Let's say I want to visit some family in Florida. My final destination is also abundant in transportation options. For Florida, I can land in Miami (MIA) or Ft. Lauderdale (FLL) and be picked up in either one.

I usually end up fiddling around in Excel, planning out time and costs for many different ways to get from A to B..

   EWR -> MIA
   EWR -> FLL
   JFK -> MIA
   FJK -> FLL
   ... etc ..
And to throw another wrench in the plan: dates. I could be planning a trip a few months in advance (in hope that tickets are cheaper). Some sites really struggle with the concept of having flexible travel dates. I want to be able to say:

    "I want to leave from the general $HomeArea,
    go to $FinalDestination, +/- $x days of $date1,
    and come back +/- $y days of $date2."
I shouldn't be building my own OLAP cubes in Excel to not get screwed over on rates.

But I've grown enough despise towards the travel industry that I'll happily spend a few hours to make sure that I'm not paying them a penny more than I have to.

>> not only does this not work but it is likely illegal under DOT in the US.

Could you explain this a bit more? What law/regulation would make this illegal?

As others have stated, the icon-heavy UI could use some work, but I'm having a hard time seeing how that could violate anything.

Ricapar··on Blocking Image Hotlinking, Leeching and Evil Sploggers with Url Rewrite
Thank you for using a specific blacklist on HTTP_REFERER.

Worst I've seen done is when sites will throw the stupid "No Hotlinking" message image when they don't see a matching referrer from the same domain. In other words, a "fuck you" to anyone who decides to configure their browser to not send referrers.

Why does it matter that much what technology is in the backend? You lead the industry with results, not with the means to get to those results.

If I can make my webapp better (however you define "better") than my competitors' using PHP and MySQL, while they're making theirs using Ruby on Rails, MongoDB, etc,etc. Does the tech stack in the background matter, aside from making a nice article?

Ricapar··on Bing doesn't support SSL

Ricapar··on Get the perfect Google Voice number, Grep-style
I got my GV number back in 2008-2009ish.. Not 100% sure on the exact date, but I've had it for a while.

I didn't start using it full-time at first, since I had an old flip-phone and there really wasn't much value added by having another number to make calls from.

Once I got an Android Phone, I started trying to use it a bit more. Started out really... "raw" would be a good word. The GV app on Android was pretty poor at first. Push notifications wouldn't go down half the time, and you wouldn't know you got a text until several hours later.

Today though - it's my full-time number, and none of my friends have my carrier-assigned cell phone number. Everything is through Google Voice. The app has greatly improved.

I also have a problem with my phone being dead half the time. If I have my GMail open though - calls get redirected to there, and I can answer from my computer.

There is also an extension for Chrome that'll "ding" when you get a text or missed call. Makes for really quick and easy replies to text messages.

Ricapar··on Get the perfect Google Voice number, Grep-style
I got into Google Voice very early on. I grabbed a number ending in 1337 in my area code.

That's now become my main number I give out to people. It brings a smirk to the few people who get it :)

Sure, GitHub is "heavily relied upon resource for the open source community" - but what is really the impact of their downtime?

You have to wait a little longer to do your push/pull/merge/etc?
