RexRollman··on NetWare 3.12 server taken down after a decade and a half of duty
Previously submitted twice with no comments each time (but I think it is a cool article as well):

RexRollman··on Dropbox, why are you ruining Mailbox?
It still annoys me that Apple took setting the default email and web applications out of the system preferences. That's exactly where it should go.
RexRollman··on Ask HN: Critique My Paranoia
You should visit the Friday Squid posts on Bruce Schneier's blog. There are often good conversations about this kind of thing.
RexRollman··on Just Say No to Facebook's Internet.org, Says Inventor of World Wide Web
Why are people so oblivious to just how evil Facebook is? Yes, no Internet is better than Facebook Internet.
RexRollman··on Building Web Applications with Make
The article says it is OS X. Maybe this is because of Apple not wanting to use something licensed under GPL-3?
RexRollman··on Reddit’s Plan to Recover from Its Meltdown
Everyone wants freedom of speech until it become uncomfortable.
RexRollman··on The New York Times reaches 1M digital only subscribers
Wait, you pay and still have to look at ads?
RexRollman··on Web Fonts Collateral Damage of Ad Blockers
I know you are specifically talking about web fonts but let's face it: a lot of the modern web sucks ass.

I don't want my browser downloading custom fonts, autoplay videos, animated GIFs, or CSS elements that move around on their own (or refuse to move when I scroll). I am also not interested having my browser download javascript or tracking cookies from dozens of third party domains when I visit a site.

RexRollman··on Insider: Oracle has lost interest in Java
Oracle can burn in hell. Least anyone forget, they are pursing a line of attack against Android that, if successful, would seriously harm programming and reverse engineering.

I encourage everyone to avoid Oracle where possible.

RexRollman··on OS X El Capitan on the Mac App Store
I believe you turn off protection via recovery mode and then reboot, after which the system behaves like it did before.
RexRollman··on OS X El Capitan on the Mac App Store
I don't believe in OS upgrades; I always wipe and clean install (mainly due to superstition). Regardless, always have a good backup before starting.
RexRollman··on OS X El Capitan on the Mac App Store
I just did a wipe and clean install and it does not install GarageBand.
RexRollman··on France tells Google to remove search results globally, or face big fines
"The Right To Be Forgotten" is one of the worst pieces of law I have ever heard of and it still amazes me that it could come from a place like Europe.

In my opinion, Google is going to have to fight this or leave France. You simple can't have France dictate the search results that citizens of other countries receive. If that is allowed to happen then other countries will demand it as well.

RexRollman··on China Tries to Extract Pledge of Compliance from U.S. Tech Firms
It will be interesting to see if the US Government, who wants backdoors, will condemn China for wanting backdoors.
RexRollman··on Apple Unveils the iPad Pro
Your not the first one I have heard say that but the screenshots I've seen of Windows 10 makes me think it is still pretty usuable.
RexRollman··on Apple Unveils the iPad Pro
In fairness to Microsoft, they have been working on reducing the space Windows takes on the drive. IIRC, Windows 10 introduced some new features to combat this. Also, storage is expandable by its SD slot.
RexRollman··on Why does icloud work in chrome on windows but not on chromebook
Do you have the Windows iCloud control panel installed? That might explain it but if you don't, than I am not sure.
RexRollman··on Apple Unveils the iPad Pro
I think the one important thing that Microsoft's approach has over Apple's is file management. File management is horrible on iOS.
RexRollman··on Apple Unveils the iPad Pro
I wouldn't touch the Surface in light of Windows 10's issues with privacy. (Not that iOS doesn't have some issues itself.)
RexRollman··on Apple Unveils the iPad Pro
I know a lot of you will think this is ridiculous but I want one to read digital comics with. I find the 9.7" iPad screen too small for this but the iPad Pro might work.
RexRollman··on Evil Google Waiting on Line One
I've received these calls myself. I don't think they are really from Google but from some spammy SEO company.

I also have been assuming that the reason I received a call in the first place is due to my contact information being linked to a domain name that I own.

RexRollman··on Public defender: it’s impossible for me to do a good job representing my clients
From what I have observed and read, people have always been quick to judge and assume guilt on the accused. I really don't think it is a modern invention.
RexRollman··on It's time for states to ban non-competition agreements
Personally, I think the company should be required to continue to pay you during the non-compete period or waive it.
RexRollman··on Microsoft uses Bing to discourage Windows 10 users from using Chrome and Firefox
I've seen that too and it is one of the things that have made me more critical of Google and the way it does things. I still use Google Search but I avoid everything else the company produces.
RexRollman··on Use an Old Kindle to Share Messages on the Fridge Electronically
Why not link to the original?

RexRollman··on Another Reason to Use an Ad Blocker: Malvertising Has Tripled This Year
Disturbing article.
RexRollman··on Ashley Madison founder steps down
Maybe dating/relationship sites should be required to disclose numbers to prevent fraud.
RexRollman··on New printed version of the Emacs Manual
"contains approximately 2.5 more years of Emacs documentation than version 24.2"

I really LOL'd on this.

RexRollman··on Leaked AshleyMadison Emails Suggest Execs Hacked Competitors
To me, the most troubling thing is that they were charging people to remove their account information and did not actually remove it (from what I have read). If this is true, then how is this not blatant fraud?
RexRollman··on OpenBSD's tame gets a path list parameter
