Revanche1367··on What TLA+ can and can't check
The closest thing I’ve come across to this is Z (“Zed”) notation. It’s from the late 70s, quite influential and pretty easy to read with a bit of logic symbolism. The same designer (Jean-Raymond Abrial) and colleagues also made the B method which can also do program refinement. Several other “well-known” (relative to other formal methods) formal specification systems were influenced by Z, including possibly TLA+ as I’ve read somewhere (but cannot confirm). Z and B both have free tooling available online.

Yeah, the naming and proliferation of different tools and sites is confusing. Quickest way I know to get on any plan is via Google One at: https://one.google.com/.
Revanche1367··on What TLA+ can and can't check
Are you not implying that SWEs are the same as probabilistic guessing machines by analogizing the LLM-user with a human developer’s manager?
Revanche1367··on What TLA+ can and can't check
I've been trying to get into formal specification & verification too, but with Z notation (which is specifically for specification) instead, together with a couple of different theorem-provers. It's for a pet project to help me learn, so not something I would be using for serious work (not right away at least), but I find the Z notation quite readable and there is quite a bit of support and free tooling for it available online. Being quite new to formal methods, I think TLA+ would be overkill for learning.

Great, so they _finally_ decided to add a non-flash model and it's not available to regular subscribers for an indefinite period. What's the point of paying for the AI Ultra plan? Anthropic doing the same with Fable as far as I know, OpenAI at least allows Pro plan subscribers to use Astra. I subscribe to Gemini AI Ultra and ChatGPT Pro, and have enterprise access to Claude at work. To be fair, Gemini's flash models since at least 3.6 have been quite useful for non-complex work, but for any task where there is a bit of complexity involved, I've had to check and recheck the work multiple times myself or sometimes with another LLM to get it to follow plans accurately. It's disappointing to see yet another Gemini release ignore adding newer pro models.

Edit: seems I was wrong about Anthropic restricting Fable, I guess our enterprise plan doesn't include it. But, the block from Anthropic regarding Mythos for regular subscribers/enterprise-users is still true I think.

Revanche1367··on Pirating the Pirates
Yes, got mixed up a bit between real world chronology and the star wars one.
Revanche1367··on Pirating the Pirates
It’s a repeated pattern, not really a conspiracy. Of course, some patterns are basically considered abhorrent to notice.

Again, I never claimed she wasn’t good at her job or didn’t earn some credit for her work on New Hope. I guess I wrongly expected HN users to have better reading comprehension and nuance than redditors. My point was entirely that in this specific instance, her contribution was overemphasized by a brigade of redditors spreading misinformation.

It’s well known that a group of fans who follow a certain youtube channel well known among star wars enthusiasts share the channel’s opinions on sites like reddit, and these became an oft-repeated myth spread there to discredit Lucas because they (like the channel admins) despise the sequel trilogy. They also don’t limit themselves to praising her editing work, but often claim that she was the _real_ creator of star wars and Lucas wouldn’t have been anywhere near as big without her. I don’t have any side on this, I am not particularly fond of the sequel trilogy nor a big fan of Lucas, but what I do dislike is the myth-making constantly pushed about various things on reddit.

Revanche1367··on Pirating the Pirates
Indeed, very often. You are probably feeling called out.
Revanche1367··on Pirating the Pirates
If you had reading comprehension, you’d understand that my comment was about the excess claims, not real ones. Marie Curie has long been known for her achievements, nobody in recent history claimed otherwise. I guess reading comprehension is too much to assume nowadays.
Revanche1367··on Pirating the Pirates
This is oft-repeated mythology that became popular on reddit; it's part of the campaign of feminist revisionism that's commonplace over there regardless of whether it matches reality or not. They constantly try to argue that it must have been a case of a man getting credit for work a woman did, even when the woman concerned made no such claim or even received appropriate credit.

The AGENTS.md file in the repo with its contents is a pretty clear giveaway though.

The oblique or slash doesn’t imply they are the same thing, it stands for “or,” meaning the preceding predicate applies to both, i.e., they are treated the same way essentially in this context.

No, I’m not in denial, I just have the rational ability to let principles override my occasional emotional reactions, it’s part of being a truly high-minded and intelligent adult human being, certainly too much to expect from everyone, I’ll acknowledge that.

Race is not superficial or irrelevant, it should be, but racists exist. You’re in denial about this because you have a deep-seated inferiority complex and what some call “internalized racism,” which again, is quite typical of a certain sector of desi immigrant populations, especially those who come from very disadvantaged or discriminated backgrounds. You want to believe race or racism isn’t a thing because otherwise you’d have to face the facts that you’re often thought of as lowly just for the way you look or where you’re from, and you don’t really fit in with the people around you, that you are and will always be thought of as “different.” Again, I know how that feels, but unlike you, I have principles that allow me to engage with the world without being in denial and also not discriminating against others because I faced discrimination myself. I’ll say though, I appreciate you not denying that you feel this way.

Racism and culture are not the same but they are subject to very similar forms of discrimination and very often by the same kinds of people. The Venn diagram of racists and xenophobes is the closest thing to being a circle without actually being one. I am not in denial also that there can be elements of corruption in a culture, and I’ll admit some of those exist among South Asians. But, the reality is there are elements of corruption in every culture, do you think American culture is perfect? If you do, I have to believe you’re not living in the same reality as the rest of us. The glorious Nippon you believe in is also steeped in cultural corruption, you deliberately ignore their recent history and in fact their current culture as well. Ask people belonging to discriminated classes there or even regular Japanese people if things are perfect over there. There is rampant debauchery, exploitation of women and young girls, problems of alcoholism, high levels of work-related stress because of cultural expectations of showing loyalty to the company and leadership. These are all elements of corruption that have negative impact, the only thing Japan does really well is cleanliness and crime prevention. Things aren’t perfect but they do try to be orderly, so why are you regularly visiting them when your brown self is prone to being dirty and committing crimes? Why make more work for them?

Lastly, I have this nagging feeling you’re not actually born/raised in the US, because I know a lot of desis like myself who are and none of them have this kind of self-hating feelings of inferiority. I think it’s because we naturally take for granted the 1st world benefits we grew up with whereas people from disadvantaged backgrounds who immigrated as adolescents sometimes seem to think they’ve reached paradise and go out of their way to present themselves as servile and not concerned with discrimination at all, just being thankful and humble to glorious white people, and in this case even adopting their externalized nationalism towards Japan. This is just a feeling though, I am not saying it with any certainty.

Revanche1367··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
Nobody claimed it was very different or that others are doing things better, at least I have not claimed such. Think logically for a minute, does (nearly) everyone doing something naturally make it a good thing? Are we not allowed to be critical of things every nation state does? I would wager every nation state has some degree and kind of corruption baked into its political process, if not officially then at least in practice. Should I then hold back on criticizing corruption in Indian or Chinese or Russian or American politics because hey every country has some degree of it?
Revanche1367··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
Also really? Japanese people come in different skin colors is part of your argument? The overwhelming majority are very similar, and you know very well perception of race has little to do with color or is at least not exclusively about color. There is no way an adult human being living America today doesn't understand that. And are you aware that even natives to the islands of Japan like the Ainu who are actually of a different race and color also face discrimination there and have long struggled against this? Again, please try to use your head a bit instead of commenting while emotional/drunk.
Revanche1367··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
Hey, it's the self-hating brown person again, stalking another one like yourself through the comments for disagreeing with you now, are you? Race is an inherent part of any immigration discussion in the modern world. Do you think US immigration policies have nothing to do with race right now? You'd be a dumbass to think so (not surprising in the least).

Revanche1367··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
I included white people too in the original comment, maybe try reading.
Revanche1367··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
Who brought up the question of tying behavior to race? Whether race exists is not the question being discussed here, regardless of the biological existence of race or not, there is a social perception of it existing and that is commonly used in the society in which (and I presume this is true for most of us) I live. I was asked an implied question about bringing up race and thus answered with the social perception in mind. You might need to ask yourself what or whom you are actually arguing with, because it doesn't appear to be me.
Revanche1367··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
I'm not saying I'm surprised it's largely western people (like myself) that are commenting here, what's surprising is how much nationalism they have for Japan without living there or being ethnically Japanese.
Revanche1367··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
You're misunderstanding the immigration requirements: who is considered doesn't necessarily mean everyone that fits the requirements will be accepted. It's a requirements list for exclusion, doesn't say fitting the requirements implies inclusion.
Revanche1367··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
I said nothing about that, it’s not news to me. That might be the case today, but there was a time when countries in the western hemisphere like America were importing massive numbers of the poor and destitute, not to mention even enslaved people. Not that I’m arguing for a return to indentured servitude and slavery, but there are clearly times when poor people are wanted or at least tolerated en masse. Such as when you are building a new country and need settlers and frontiersmen, or when your population is struggling to keep the economy up due to an aging native population with hardly anybody to look after them.
Revanche1367··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
The requirements are essentially that you're either upper-middle class or better from a developed country (or a resource rich one like those in the Middle East) or from the ultra-wealthy of a developing/underdeveloped one, and you put in enough effort to learn the language. I doubt the ultra-wealthy will really be required to have language proficiency in practice. This is basically to gatekeep all but the wealthiest black, brown and "lesser" Asian peoples as expected of Japan, but the 30 years savings requirement will keep at bay quite a few white people who may have dreamed about immigrating there too. I don't wish the Japanese people ill, but I hope they'll find some solution for all those aging, near-destitute, and sometimes abandoned elderly folks instead of telling them to suck it up for the sake of cultural identity.

Side note, but it's always funny to me that whenever (and frequently) Japanese immigration policies are discussed on sites like HN and Reddit, there seems to always be a large number of clearly white people from America and Europe coming in to display their Japanese nationalism.

Revanche1367··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
I’ve found Gemini and Codex can do pretty well by just telling them to follow my writing style, be brief, be less robotic, be professional, be semi-professional, use less technical jargon, no em-dashes, etc. depending on the task. But, I only use that for short summaries of things I am deeply familiar with to send a slack message about or similar. I also edit before sending. It takes maybe a couple of prompts to get 90% of the way there.

Claude on the other hand is atrocious at sounding human, it’s like it’s deliberately following LLM -speak stereotypes no matter how you tell it to write. I finally told it to stop using “Claudeisms,” which gave better though not great results.

They’re holding off on doing that kind of thing until they have assurance that it won’t matter if the general public know who specifically they are, that they have this capability, and that they are willing to use it without caring for legality. I estimate that we’re probably right on the precipice of that time period.

It started as a comparison, it’s a question of hypocrisy. Very convenient to be able to invent labels like “whataboutism” to stop a comparison when your side starts it but then someone else asks “what about your own history?”
