Rerarom··on Ask HN: Serious mathematics books that can replace a good teacher?
Susan Rigetti is a woman.
Rerarom··on Programming Burnout
For a 14 year-old, they seem very non-cringey, see e.g. this:

https://tsk.bearblog.dev/why-tsuki/

I am a bit impressed.

There is another thread here:

Rerarom··on Tutorial Series to learn Common Lisp quickly
Indeed, I've been told countless times I don't "need" to learn some branch of math I was interested in (by mathematicians no less).

Also, I've been told I "can't avoid" some branch of algebra (I've never touched it since).

Rerarom··on Now I’m calculating with constructive reals
Yeah equality of computable reals is undecidable (basically the halting of a Turing machine can be encoded as a computable real being nonzero).
Rerarom··on Workers Are Winning the Return-to-Office War Because They’re Right
Not everywhere.

I went to the only high school in my country which had lockers (it was mildly famous for it, being seen as an "American" trait) and I never had a locker because they were on a first come first served basis.

Rerarom··on Why I quit Google (the second time)
Who knows, maybe they're right
Rerarom··on Thinner on Paper
For those who don't know: the picture is one of the original illustrations of Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon. It depicts one of the leaders of the moonshot project, who was disappointed that he couldn't travel to the moon so he lived for a week or so inside the projectile, getting a bit fatter as a result (I guess this is the allusion). The pic is from when he gets out.

Rerarom··on Psychology “incompatible with hypothesis-driven theoretical science”
Can confirm, am mathematician.

It's not like I can't understand it, but it never attracted me enough to put in the work. (And I am quite put off by questions which require statistics to settle, which, yeah, I know, it's most of science.)

Rerarom··on Ask HN: How do you deal with life altering decisions?
whoa didn't realize you were on hn too. Constant vigilance!
Rerarom··on I want to give Oracle money but I can't
IME (lived 3 years in Germany) most Germans seem to think there is only one country in the world, that country being "Federal Republic of Germany around the 1970s or so".
Rerarom··on Computers Can Be Understood (2020)
Haha, started thinking of Julia Evans while reading the post and then her name just popped up.
Rerarom··on Visi On by VisiCorp – The obscure first full GUI for the IBM PC
Love ToastyTech, discovered it back in December 2004 and checked it regularly since (hasn't been much updated in the last few years but I still hope).
Rerarom··on Horse-riding astronaut is a milestone in AI’s journey to make sense of the world
Well, nurse ends in an e, which is usually a feminine ending.
Rerarom··on Ask HN: What If Russia Wins?
Well Putin has stated in his Feb 24 address that he does not intend to occupy Ukraine, so he's not bound by that in order to claim a win.
Rerarom··on Finally We May Have a Path to the Fundamental Theory of Physics

Rerarom··on Varieties of Mathematical Understanding
Re: the remark in the bracket

The analogy is a bit stretched, but I think it's due to both being described by systems of equations, in a sense.

Rerarom··on Each Firefox download has a unique identifier
Thanks!
Rerarom··on Each Firefox download has a unique identifier
Why is this being downvoted?
Rerarom··on A regular expression to check for prime numbers (2007)
No, in unary.
Rerarom··on Examples of common false beliefs in mathematics
I have a math degree, and I could understand most of them by the end of my second year.
Rerarom··on Ask HN: Is anyone working on “downloading” knowledge to the brain?
What do you mean, forget? The whole point of the OP was that they are aware of how much time learning takes in real life, otherwise it wouldn't be a problem to solve.
Rerarom··on I Miss RSS
Yeah I always opened the website when using RSS, even in 2008, so I don't mind.
Rerarom··on Quantum theory based on real numbers can be experimentally falsified
So you would like them to not be representable?
Rerarom··on NASA spacecraft ‘touches’ the Sun for the first time ever

Rerarom··on Directory Opus is a complete replacement for Explorer
Does it mean it is also a shell replacement or you keep Explorer as shell and you run DOpus as you would run, say, Total Commander?
Rerarom··on Whitehead and Russell’s Principia rewritten in Coq
He mentioned it in the title of the incompleteness paper.
Rerarom··on Teach Yourself Computer Science (2020)
> trying to get their papers accepted

I think that to do that one has to spend (most of their) time writing those papers, and doing the research contained in them.
