Never knew the guy personally, but he was certainly one of my inspirations. RIP. :(

Absolutely love Jekyll and GitHub Pages for hosting project documentation and personal websites. Just wish GH Pages would support SSL. :(
Relys··on VMware Confirms Layoffs as It Prepares for Dell Acquisition
This has always confused me. Now, I'm not an economist (I have a M.S. in CompSci and do security research), but isn't the correct model for growth in a majority of businesses sigmoidal as opposed to purely exponential?

For example, let's imagine a company that sells toasters. At some point they're going to reach peak market saturation where everyone in the world has a toaster. Now during this process right when growth in it's peak we see an almost ethereal phenomenon that capitalism delivers. We see the most optimized form of an idea materialize which everyone can benefit from and gain wealth. Wealth in this case would be owning a toaster in it's most optimal form according to the laws of physics and current engineering processes.

The problem is that once this epoch takes place the projected exponential growth for the business just vanishes. Instead we see gradual decline until the new market cap (replacing broken toasters etc.) is reached and an thus an equilibrium in the market is reached. During this process we see the nasty side of capitalism as the toaster company fights tooth and nail to prevent this inevitable conclusion. We see monopolization, deliberate weakening of the integrity of the product to increase time to EOL (which wreaks havoc on the environment), absurd patenting and copyrighting, digital rights management, lobbying and bailouts. This not only hurts the customer, but the economy as a whole as our political system is set up to encourage this type of behavior.

Now, one of the main themes I'm seeing in this discussion is the problem of demand. It seems like a lot of "things" that our economy has relied on consumers purchasing has hit this market saturation point and is being limited by technological advancement.

I think that we are at a point where we need to change our financial structure to one that helps create demand. With the minimum federal wage remaining relatively stagnant for the past few decades along with more and more low level jobs being replaced by automation people simply don't have the money to buy things let alone make investments. The only real solution I see is a push for a universal minimal income. But then again, what do I know? Like I said, I'm not an economist..

Yes, I noticed this several months ago when I switched to T-Mobile. Hoping this gains traction...
Relys··on Owner of Peet's to buy Keurig for almost $14B
Starbucks is leveraging it's economy of scale to out price it's competitors in a free market. Keurig is using it's position in the industry to enforce DRM on it's hardware to stifle free market competition and exert it's power over the customer. Now, you may agree or disagree with Starbucks business practices or Keurigs DRM. However, I stand to argue that a direct comparison between the two is unfair.
Relys··on Trojan found in Filezilla downloaded from SourceForge
Is there any license that prohibits this then? If not, should one be created?
Relys··on Trojan found in Filezilla downloaded from SourceForge
You're 100% sure? I would expect to see registry diffs before/after FileZilla was installed, disassembled code of the subroutine accessing your passwords in the malicious program, and a network packet capture of your data being sent over the wire.
Relys··on Trojan found in Filezilla downloaded from SourceForge
"Since the content they host is open-source, this is technically legal, but it's scummy as all hell."

If the project is licensed under GPLv3 (or any other strong copyleft license), wouldn't they be illegally hosting it because they are bundling their malware dropper with software that isn't compatible with the license?

Relys··on VeraCrypt Patches Two Newly-Discovered TrueCrypt Vulnerabilities
TrueCrypt was audited awhile back. It was abandoned by the developer(s?). VeraCrypt is a fork off of TrueCrypt and a continuation of the software, so I would assume that the audit for TrueCrypt applies.
Relys··on New Chromecast 2015
I believe that is the case. I highly recommend just purchasing an RPI 2 and throwing the OSMC distro (Debian+Kodi) on it. Kodi supports the AirPlay protocol, so once you enable it in services you can use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.airaudio&hl... and basically pipe AUX out from your phone to multiple devices on your network. :)

This obviously requires the dependency of your phone, but I prefer the flexibility.

Relys··on What’s it like to have Google and Amazon try to kill your startup?
Shouldn't that fall under some sort of antitrust law?

Edit: Yikes, just saw the thread on EU antitrust accusations which got me thinking about the concept of a decentralized search engine. I found this: http://yacy.net/en/index.html

Nice release, but how is the bandwidth going to be sustainable?

Also, for projects like XBMCTorrent the torrent is seeded while the user is viewing the movie. Wouldn't abundant leaching completely destroy the ecosystem?

Here's the 3D HMD I created for my Galaxy S4: https://i.imgur.com/eCxH4co.jpg

I spent about $15 on that. $5 for lenses off of ebay, $5 for strap, and $5 for 3d model.

Here's my solution for 6DOF: https://i.imgur.com/Gfl3ERY.jpg

I took a PS3 eye cam and cut out the IR filter and replaced it with a sheet of floppy disk to block visible light. Then I went to radio shack and bought 3 IR leds, 30OMH resistors and power supply. I'm using tridef 3D to render SBS 3D w/ oculus plugin to distort screen to accommodate lens curvature. I'm using splashtop/kainy to stream to phone. I'm using facetracknoir/FreePie to do the head tracking.

Relys··on Cheap FPGA Development Boards: What to look for
I used the Altera DE1 in my college EE class a few years ago and am interested in getting back into writing VHDL to help learn more about reverse engineering on a hardware level.

Should I go ahead and get the DE1-SoC since I already have experience with Quartus II or should I go for one of the Spartans (which I know nothing about). If I go with Altera is a DE2 worth the investment (it's 2x the price)?

Relys··on Nintendo finds itself under fire from furious shareholders
Getting a Wii U development unit costs around $[2000,4000]+import tax. It's free for the first n months (1 or 3 I can't remember) and then you have to pay to keep the unit.

If you plan on releasing it on the eshop you will have to pay an exorbitant sum to each countries ESRB equivalent which is a complete racket.

So yes, it is a developer hostile company. Then again, Nintendo has always been behind with keeping up with the latest tech trends and features. For example just look at their online services: * No party chat. * Very little 3DS/Wii U cross compatibility for NNIDs (and don't forget the horribly long FCs). * No cross licensing between 3DS/Wii U. If I want to buy Super Mario Bros 3 I should NOT have to pay for it twice. * No remote play support * No 3DS controller support (besides Monster Hunter) * Digital Games on the eshop aren't priced competitively as you can almost always find a physical copy cheaper. This part baffles me.
