Reki··on What can TypeScript learn from Zig? What can Zig learn from TypeScript?
Its in zig 0.12
Reki··on GitHub Copilot Workspace: Technical Preview
They're asymptotic to human performance.
Reki··on US House passes bill to ban TikTok if owners won't divest
So how do you explain our relashionship with countries like Saudi Arabia? Because forget the bully, thats like being friends with the school shooter.
Reki··on UN Security Council Passes Ceasefire Resolution

Reki··on An average programmer's (me) reason to invest in Rust
The difference is that forefoot running is harder, but _simpler_. You dont even need highly engineering shoes to run using it, especially barefoot. You can run on bare metal.
Reki··on Senate bill introduced to ban TSA use of facial recognition in airports
Beautiful comment. The Grope is Good would make a great band name or campaign slogan, or maybe both.

Ill never forget asking a TSA guy if he was sure mmwave was really just sound. "Yes! Its just sound waves, completely harmless," he assured me. "Less than your phone makes in your pocket!"

Reki··on Covid-19 3rd leading cause of death among Canadians in 2022
There is no scientific evidence for being able to "train your immune system". There is plenty of evidence the opposite happens. Covid especially can cause permanent immune damage.
Reki··on Reasons Our Civilization Will Soon Collapse
Its ok to admit you cant truly grasp something, in fact its a mark of wisdom. The collective output and understanding of the world's scientists is equivalent to that of a superintelligence, you alone will never come close.

I have an uncle who knows a lot more facts about climate change than I do, and uses them to great effect in arguing that its not real.

My uncle is also an idiot.

Reki··on On Learning Compilers and Creating Programming Languages
I think this is great advice, but saying that PL design is done already isn't really true. Its not as hard to make a new kind of PL as you might think, but it is of course hard to make it useful.

Just combining the right features and forgoing the wrong ones into a language alone is an art, to say that its only innovation is a bit like claiming paintings are innovations because we have all the colors :)

Reki··on AI will never threaten humans, says top Meta scientist
Ponder about how the universe could give rise to such a creature, and maybe accidentally discover a few new laws of physics.

_Then_ he'd kill it.

Reki··on Ozempic linked to stomach paralysis, other gastrointestinal issues: UBC study
The thing about claiming things like this is they require a strong scientific consensus. Otherwise, if they're wrong, its just hurting people, sometimes even killing them. Many girls die every year from EDs, and societal shame is a strong candidate for their cause.
Reki··on Prisoners in Finland Live in Open Prisons Where They Learn Tech Skills [video]
Deterring crime through punishment is a myth. Their crime rates are lower than more punative countries.
Reki··on Covid-19 Is Back, but Not Many Want to Return to Masking
Testing data is dependent on actually testing people, which we aren't doing. However, more accurate measures like wastewater are very consistent with the current narrative.
Reki··on The rule says, “No vehicles in the park”
Jim backs his RV into the park. He does so without his vehicle entering the park.

Pam comes to the park and begins to live in Jim's RV.

Bob, an alien, lands his spaceship in the park and initiates first contact.

Tim, a pipercub pilot, lands his plane in the park after suffering an engine failure.

Sam rides the subway home underneath the park.

Jordan, a maintenance worker, repairs a broken light in the park from his cherrypicker.

Robert, Jordan's boss, alleges he broke the rule. Another light needs to be replaced, so Robert fixes it, but ensures the cherrypicker's wheels are outside the park.

Tom, a tow truck driver, tows Tamika's car.

Bill emails a complete 3d cad model of a car, which happens to use a fiber line running under the park.

Reki··on U.S. Intelligence Has Amassed 'Sensitive and Intimate' Data on 'Nearly Everyone'
I know I'm in the minority, but still, I didn't give up my privacy for "convenience". I bought my first phone because my employer required a way to contact me. Not to mention all the ways pretty much every single job nowadays requires much more invasions of privacy than just a phone.
Reki··on Ask HN: How do you work in Programming language research?
To make better languages
Reki··on Sam Altman isn’t the answer to regulating artificial intelligence
You would expect a machine that can reason to improve in its responses as a conversation progresses, instead of hallucinating.
Reki··on GPT-4: A Copilot for the Mind
I think your point about research is valid, but once that is done and you have a rough understanding of a solution, you just want things to work. You dont want a bunch of ways to do one thing, you want a single opinionated solution. Part of the information encoded in these models is from trainers deciding which answer is best, and that is information itself which isnt necessarily online.
Reki··on Repeat yourself, do more than one thing, and rewrite everything (2018)
Its a zero sum sanity game and the companies trade us around to trying to win the most of it
Reki··on T-Mobile is buying Ryan Reynolds’ Mint Mobile for up to $1.35B
In case you dont know, there are other budget providers like Tello that will send you a sim online if you have an unlocked phone.
Reki··on Ask HN: Are a lot of books just useless?
True, but their cost is still relatively cheaper considering the profit you can make from them is more than from books. Part of this is also because they are easier to replicate.
Reki··on Ask HN: Are a lot of books just useless?
Every medium has creation and consumption costs, and it affects their average quality. Books have a high creation cost: both in time and money, relative to electronic mediums. They also have a high consumption cost, as you cant read a book in a few seconds like you can watch shortform content. These factors select for quality.
Reki··on Tesla recalls 360k vehicles, says full self-driving beta may cause crashes
What, you think people should be able to breathe for free?
Reki··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project
I could see this if he made something dramatically more complex than just running python online. The author shows pretty clearly that nothing he is working on isn't already out there.
Reki··on Google fires engineer who called its AI sentient
Just because paperclips are useful doesnt mean we should keep making more of them forever.
