RegularOpossum··on Snowden: "They've gone full mask-off: do not ever trust OpenAI or its products"
Should have never run and would have been out free by now like Chelsea Manning.
RegularOpossum··on Airbus Shatters Record for Jet Orders as Demand Soars
I recently had five hour a first class flight (lucky upgrade) on a brand-new Delta 321Neo, it was easily the best flight I've ever had. The 321Neo is just a brilliant plane that outclasses any 737 in my experience.
RegularOpossum··on Gemini AI
Not anymore, it'd be "Apple AI+" or "Siri+".
RegularOpossum··on Steam Deck OLED
By my count I've bought 17 games since getting my SteamDeck, they got me.
RegularOpossum··on Coffee in a Can
More classic Cooper I was unaware of!
RegularOpossum··on Coffee in a Can
Agreed, that Columbian Supremo is roasted beyond what I would even call dark. The Kirkland signature blends are roasted by Starbucks so we know why those are burnt but the Columbian seems to be by someone else.
RegularOpossum··on Lahaina Fire Victims Being Pressured to Sell Land
Yes, having formal diplomatic relations in the late 19th century with major Western powers to other nations is a significant difference. This is very different than say, France having tribal relations in an influence fight with British Colonial expansionism 150 years prior to the overthrowing of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Again, it's all bad, this is just a different kind of bad.

RegularOpossum··on Lahaina Fire Victims Being Pressured to Sell Land
The argument generally is the case in Hawaii was particularly egregious, as Hawaii had an organized government with formal diplomatic relations with many countries, including embassies in Great Britain and France.

Hawaii, along with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, are examples of areas of significant escalation of the U.S. expansionist history through the overthrowing of recognized governments. It's all bad, but these are just a different type of bad.

RegularOpossum··on Judge sends Sam Bankman-Fried to jail over witness tampering
FTX advertised on fortune cookies at my local Chinese takeout restaurant. I'm not sure what else needs to be said.
RegularOpossum··on GM reverses plan to retire Chevrolet Bolt as it chases EV target
I'm definitely interested, an upgraded Bolt is a perfect second car for my family, a small daily driver. I had been curious about the upcoming Volvo EX30, but the stories from Polestar owners have me cautious.
RegularOpossum··on Why Oppenheimer Deserves His Own Movie [video]
It was Dunkirk I was most referencing in my original comment. I found it a very disappointing film. Here's this important human story that the movie refuses to tell clearly, making the whole thing hit less than the sum of it's parts. 1917 was much more effective in its stylistic choices in my opinion.
RegularOpossum··on Why Oppenheimer Deserves His Own Movie [video]
I'm excited for the movie but also worried Nolan's worst habits when it comes to forcing non linear narratives are going to be present. It always makes me wonder if he's confident enough in the story when he does gimmicks.
RegularOpossum··on New analysis of tooth minerals confirms megalodon shark was warm-blooded
As others have said, ebay is great as there are a lot of good fossil dealers. I personally got mine at a flea market, and talked the seller down to $20 for something he probably just picked up off the ground.
RegularOpossum··on New analysis of tooth minerals confirms megalodon shark was warm-blooded
You're not building a museum so fractional specimens are the way to good. Teeth are a great place to start, they're ridiculously common (so affordable) and often of very little paleontological significance at this point (incredibly common). For fossil bones there, stuff like piece of Hadrosaurs that are again, so common they're of little significance.

For rounding out my collection of all the periods, I'm looking at fish and aquatic animals like trilobites.

RegularOpossum··on New analysis of tooth minerals confirms megalodon shark was warm-blooded
My cousin brought over his five year old recently and I showed the kid my small fossil collection. They thought I must have been rich but the most expensive piece was $50 and even then I knew I was over paying for it. I'm working on having one fossil from every geologic period.
RegularOpossum··on More than 75% of Steam games tested are playable or verified on the Steam Deck
Absolutely love it. Between work travel, doctor's appointments, and just not being locked to the desk or couch, the portable nature has completely changed how I play and think about playing videogames.
RegularOpossum··on I bought the only physical encyclopedia still in print
I loved reading my grandfather's 1980s edition World Book when visiting, pre internet. There was something kind of magical about that much information in one place at the time, but at a house instead of a library!

Edit: I also remember browsing the Macintosh version of the Encyclopedia Britannica as one of my first school computer activities.

RegularOpossum··on Apple unveils new Mac Studio and brings Apple Silicon to Mac Pro
I would keep an eye out at Costco, M1 Pro MBPs still pop up on sale there regularly, they might get some Studios.
RegularOpossum··on Breakthrough deal to prevent Colorado River from drying up
The vast majority of Utah relies on snow melt for water as the Colorado bypass most of the population so it's not as much of an issue.
RegularOpossum··on Linda Yaccarino is the new CEO of Twitter
But the logical question is, could any of that been possible without the government subsidies he received? I think without that prior optimization for subsidies, he's not given the creditability or ever actual credit to do any of the other shenanigans.
RegularOpossum··on Linda Yaccarino is the new CEO of Twitter
It might not even be raising money that he's good at but rather structuring business to optimize around government subsidies (ev credits, government space contracts).
RegularOpossum··on Deseret Alphabet
Fantastic comment. I spent a few years in Utah and was mostly unable to figure out a pattern in the former members I knew aside from they all know their church history, but it could just be selection bias as a history fan myself.
RegularOpossum··on Deseret Alphabet
Early Mormon history is absolutely fascinating, it's fun and goofy at parts, and then there's parts where quite a number of of people die.
RegularOpossum··on VW, Rivian, Nissan, BMW lose access to U.S. EV tax credits
So there is still hope to see their weird tandem Ford Focus someday!

Elio can't still be around can it?
RegularOpossum··on FTX stored private keys to crypto assets in plaintext, without access controls
Also, they advertised on fortune cookies at my local Chinese takeout place, which I think told me all I needed to know.
RegularOpossum··on Newest Linux Gaming Predictions for 2023
> Microsoft will release a XBox portable console by the end of the Year.

I could definitely see them making a portable game streaming device, stream from the cloud or your Xbox Series X. Sure there's already some products that do this but it makes a lot of sense for Microsoft so they can drive more GamePass subscriptions.

RegularOpossum··on 75% of the Most Played Games on Steam Are Playable on the Steam Deck
I adore my Steamdeck. I've had mine for the past six months and during that time I've had to spend more time in hospital waiting rooms than I'd have liked, but it's been an excellent companion. Over the years I've owned many consoles and built a few gaming PCs, but my entire interest in how I interact with games now is portable first. It's funny, I feel like I've gone back to where I started when my first game system was the original Game Boy.
RegularOpossum··on Is Babylon 5 secretly the most influential TV show of the past 25 years? (2021)
I understand it to be that they weren't sure there was going to be a 5th so the forced two major plot lines into Season 4 which was popular enough they got Season 5 with the problem of most of the big arcs already wrapped up.
RegularOpossum··on Pirate Weather
On android I use NativeAlpha for setting up Briefsky as "app" that opens in its own Android Webview "app" rather than a browser. It's almost like DarkSky minus the notifications.
