Regnore··on Retail, search and Amazon’s $40B ‘advertising’ business
The difference is that there are many stores to negotiate with for shelf space - in the online world there is only one serious player (although this does seem to be changing over time)
Regnore··on Retail, search and Amazon’s $40B ‘advertising’ business
How many options are there for retail?
Regnore··on Retail, search and Amazon’s $40B ‘advertising’ business
I assumed that this is a legal requirement for all big online stores - is that not the case?

Are you sure you're not just being catfished by companies seeking to learn competitor salaries?
Regnore··on BBC offices in India raided by tax officials amid Modi documentary fallout
My bad for being vague with my definitions:

Cracking down - the government suppresses dissent by force.

Removing the source of dissent - this means solving the underlying issue that would otherwise cause the dissent. This would be government/society providing for the needs and desires of it’s population.

I think most would agree that the first is much worse than the second.

> The West has resources and well-oiled propaganda machinery in place to control the dissent

Can you elaborate on this? Resources I agree with - but that boils down to controlling dissent by just removing a source of it which is not the same as controlling dissent by cracking down

Regnore··on US jet shoots down unknown object flying off Alaska coast
Wouldn’t it be prudent in this situation for China to just not send these balloons over the US mainland if they didn’t want to offer the US an excuse to fear monger them?

Regnore··on Money creation in the modern economy (2014) [pdf]
In the long run and averaged among many individuals that may be true but in the short run and on an individual basis allowing banks to regulate themselves is a sure fire way for some people to unfairly lose a lot of their accumulated worth.
Regnore··on Money creation in the modern economy (2014) [pdf]
I don't agree. Instead of being between two people, think of the transaction as being between a person and society. Since society offers a lot of different things, you can sell your pigs to society for a token which you can later use to redeem goods and services later. In this sense money is a debt - or an IOU - from society to the holder.
Regnore··on JPMorgan to spend $1B on rental homes in the US to become a megalandlord
You won’t be able to infinitely increase your rent (renters can only afford so much), and other landlords with more tolerance for risk may not raise rents as much (or at all). Some landlords will exit the market which will lower the price of housing and transition some renters into owners.

It seems to me that home prices are increasing at a much faster rate than incomes in many areas. The home ownership % of younger people is declining over time:

Given the perception (and perhaps reality) that they are worse off than their parents generation, it’s not too surprising that they rebel against the system.

Regnore··on Why I'm less than infinitely hostile to cryptocurrency
This doesn't answer the concern, it just downplays it.

> Of course a technology centered around avoiding governance and banking failures will be centered in the countries with the most governance and banking failures!

The issue that I have with this perspective is that it doesn't actually solve the underlying problem - it just kicks it down the road. As soon as crypto becomes big in a country with failed governments and banks, it's going to become the primary target of those same governments and banks.

Regnore··on FTX billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried funneled dark money to Republicans
I agree that he’s not particularly trustworthy but what would be his motivation for lying here? I can’t come up with any.
Regnore··on Huawei phones automatically deleting videos of the protests?
This could be mostly rectified by having a free press in China. Another way to say it - the sole entity that could solve the problem of needing to rely on random internet claims about things happening in China is the Chinese government.

Is old.reddit.com very unstable for everyone else in safari or just me? On my past 3 iphones through multiple iOS versions I can't browse for more than 10 minutes without eventually hanging/crashing safari. It seems to happen most frequently after browsing posts with images

The linked article is from their opinion section which is always hit and miss depending on how you lean politically.

The actual reporting done by WSJ is still top tier imo.

Regnore··on On the supposed “nihilism” of the Mango Markets arbitrageur
What you are describing seems more akin to option trading in tradfi than loans. The only reason someone would be willing to give 200k worth of collateral for a 100k loan is because they are betting that the 200k worth of crypto will increase in value more than the interest on the dollars they are borrowing.

The use case for almost all individual loans in tradfi is getting a loan for more than you have in collateral.

Regnore··on ACT Test Scores Drop to Lowest Levels in More Than 30 Years
I tend to agree but also acknowledge that TV and radio did have engagement feedback loops. Viewer numbers and focus groups were/are used to “optimize” the content. Those are obviously not as extremely personalized as what’s available in modern forms of media but I struggle to identify a specific tipping point at where such feedback loops become problematic.
Regnore··on Iran’s Internet Shutdown Hides a Deadly Crackdown
Right but this is a matter of prioritization of resources more than some nefarious plot by the US government to control the US media.
Regnore··on Iran’s Internet Shutdown Hides a Deadly Crackdown
I understand that way of thinking - my take is that Manufacturing Consent is mostly right but practically boils down to “American’s want American media organizations to have a pro-America bias”.

That fact that international media is easily accessible is a good counter-balance to this problem. In addition, you are starting to see the desires of the public changing - e.g. you much more frequently read/hear anti-American articles/opinions from the American progressive news media.

Regnore··on Iran’s Internet Shutdown Hides a Deadly Crackdown
My wife is Iranian and she says that something people in Iran fail to understand about the US is that the US media is not controlled by the US government. I’ve wondered if it stems from the fact that Iran media is strictly controlled by the Iran government to the point where they are indistinguishable. I can assure you in the US this is not the case.

> Any news has a usage for whatever political agenda there is in the US administration.

If the previous administration was not sufficient proof to you that this is clearly wrong, then what proof could dissuade you?
