RegBarclay··on The code worked differently when the moon was full
Dates are a pain.

The date bug I committed with the longest tail was daylight time. It was all good until we got to a day with 25 hours when we "fell back."

RegBarclay··on Does low cholesterol cause cognitive impairment? Part II
Dad's 85. He was 82 when it became clear he was having significant problems, but mom had been saying he was having lesser problems before that. My aunt has just turned 80. Grandma died at 87. I'm not sure exactly when she became symptomatic, but it was also around 80. I'm 53. I figure I have 20-25 good years left.

The cholesterol connection is of interest because of my family history, but my current thinking is that the so-called Type 3 Diabetes pathway seems very plausible. Whether it affects brain health or not, I'm on the "carbs are bad" bandwagon.

RegBarclay··on Does low cholesterol cause cognitive impairment? Part II
I'd like to see a study on those with naturally low cholesterol. My dad and I (and some of his ancestors) have very low cholesterol and great LDL and HDL numbers without any medication or special diet. Dad's been told he has really good genes. Except he has AD. His sister has just started showing signs of dementia. Their mother died with AD. I'm not liking my odds here.

Could be that the usual AD genes are strong. Could be that those genes co-occur commonly with the same genes that allow me to be a butter and bacon eating machine. Could be that low cholesterol is a really bad thing for brain health. I figure I've got about 10 or 20 years to find out.

RegBarclay··on America is substantially reducing poverty among children
Those checks are prepayment of a child tax credit. In my case, it just increases what I'll owe when I file my taxes.
RegBarclay··on Michelin's airless tires are scheduled for market launch in 2024
Adjusting inflation pressure is a feature. I run my tires higher than the vehicle recommendation but still below the sidewall limit for improved fuel economy. Airing down for sand is a thing too.
RegBarclay··on Pinky and the Brain
I see Pinky and the Brain. I upvote. I see Postmodern Jukebox. I upvote.

Thanks for the smile to start off my Monday.

RegBarclay··on Tupolev Tu-144: The Soviets' doomed rival to Concorde (2017)
One of the best Soviet airplane rivalry stories is the Tupolev Tu-4 - a bolt for bolt copy of the US B-29.

A good telling of the story here: https://wwiiafterwwii.wordpress.com/2019/06/29/b-29-to-bull/

RegBarclay··on The Coronavirus Is Here Forever
HIV is a different family of viruses, so the comparison to the corona family of viruses doesn't apply.

RegBarclay··on Life Improvements Since the 1990s
I was 23 in 1991. It was OK, but just yesterday I was talking with a twentysomething guy who was playing for me a song he'd written using GarageBand on his phone. I told him, man, I wish I'd had YouTube and GarageBand when I was his age. It's really hard to say what I'd do. I'd probably not change anything. I've noticed that computer technology isn't really anything special to my kids. I'm not sure I would have taken up an interest in programming as a youth in 2021 as I did in the 80s and 90s.
RegBarclay··on An old hacker's tips on staying employed
I didn't at all hear scorn for different goals:

"So maybe not all of this advice I’ve given applies to you if your priorities are different. Also, maybe I am not qualified to talk about how to deal with some situations like having to job hop between startups and so on. I can only offer what I have learned myself, take away what is useful."

RegBarclay··on Where are the robotic bricklayers?
I've laid a little block and brick for myself. I found it kind of fun and pretty rewarding work. As soon as I saw the headline and started pre-thinking about the content, I immediately thought, "well, the mortar for one thing..." The bricks aren't all that uniform either. My big takeaway from doing myself was that it's easy to obsess over each brick (like a machine might) but when people look at a brick wall, they see the forest, not the trees: it's not necessary for each brick to be laid perfectly.

I also heartily second volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. It's rewarding work, fun if you're with a good crew, and a great way to learn new skills.

RegBarclay··on Protect student privacy: ban eproctoring
There are basic technical hurdles for a lot of users too. My wife recently took a professional certification exam at home. She is an RN. We had to borrow my son's desktop gaming system, set it up in the kitchen, and jump some technical hoops (buy an external web cam) to meet the proctoring requirements. My wife probably couldn't have done it without my technical help and it was more stressful for her than going to a testing center.
RegBarclay··on Facebook now warning users about exposure to “harmful extremist content”
Her defense in a defamation lawsuit was that she was using hyperbole in offering an opinion. She's not the only commentary show host to use that defense, but she's the most notable one on the left that a lot of people like to overlook when pointing out the exaggerations and hyperbole on the right.

RegBarclay··on Facebook now warning users about exposure to “harmful extremist content”
Rachel Maddow has done the same, but I know way too many people who trust what she says.
RegBarclay··on Don't Piss Off Bradley, the Parts Seller Keeping Atari Machines Alive
Looks like we HN doesn't like Seinfeld.
RegBarclay··on Don't Piss Off Bradley, the Parts Seller Keeping Atari Machines Alive
Surprised no one has made the Seinfeld Soup Nazi comparison yet.
RegBarclay··on Engineer Converts Used Van into Mobile Laundromat, Offers Free Loads to Homeless
I was interested in that aspect of the story when I clicked into it, but I'm not really disappointed that it wasn't covered. Turns out it wasn't really the point anyway.

That said, he could easily have a generator rigged up to supply power. A lot of RVs have on-board washers and dryers, so the technology is widely available. If I were going to do something like this, I'd try to find dryers that heated with propane both for efficiency and to limit the electrical draw on the generator.

RegBarclay··on Why the new USPS mail trucks look so weird
This is still how it is in rural areas. We have a mail lady. I've seen multiple vehicles -- some of them Jeeps. We don't get the LLVs out our way.

On the USPS Creed, I was a paperboy when I was a teen and always chuckled at that. I never got Sundays off. I don't think I ever had a snow day, but there were days the US mail didn't run due to weather.

RegBarclay··on The Evolution of Developer Salaries: Looking Back 20 Years
As the developer tooling improves and parts of my job get easier, I sometimes think I may be out of a job someday. But then I talk to some users or other non-devs about technical issues and realize I will always have a job.
RegBarclay··on UPS sells trucking unit
UPS Freight was an acquisition of Overnite Transportation several years ago. Not sure how much real integration between the companies ever happened beyond branding.
RegBarclay··on Facebook to staff: Avoid company-branded clothing for own safety
What if the private entity is censoring at the behest of the government?
RegBarclay··on As Vaccines Are Rolled Out, Get Ready for False Side Effects
I'm also in the "why don't you take it first" group personally because I'm not at very high risk personally. But my 80-something mother is bucking the vaccine and she should absolutely take it ASAP because of her age and comorbidities, but here we are.
RegBarclay··on Attention Is My Most Valuable Asset for Productivity as a Software Developer
I love my Kindle. I'm out of space for physical books and just love the reading experience on the Kindle. I think it works because it's a distraction-free device. It does one thing and it does it well.
RegBarclay··on 'Zoom towns' are exploding in the West
I changed jobs to join a remote team. Equipment was shipped to my home. I've never met any of my team in person and won't until COVID limitations are resolved and the home office goes back to bringing everybody in for team building. My wife was WFH before COVID and has been onboarding people too. It's new to a lot of people, but companies are working through the issues and adding people with zero human contact all the time.
RegBarclay··on Room-Temperature Superconductivity Achieved for the First Time
So far, there's always been a caveat. Kudos to Quanta for being up front with it in the headline and being punny with it too.
RegBarclay··on Dual-flush toilets 'wasting more water than they save'
Auto flushing toilets are water wasters too when they misread and flush 2 or 3 times while the user hasn't left the seat.
RegBarclay··on Advocates want to name heatwaves like hurricanes to raise awareness of dangers
They lost me at "We need more drama..."

No, I do not think we need more drama.

RegBarclay··on Ask HN: What is your favorite motto?
There are two kinds of people who never amount to much: those who cannot do what they are told, and those who can do nothing else.
RegBarclay··on Science and steely nerves spared Houston from a nightmare hurricane evacuation
