Red_Tarsius··on We Become What We Behold (2017)
I agree and I should have used a different verb than "reach". "Maintain" might be more apt. Maybe I know what you mean: I feel that way when I'm driving through my old hometown. My grandparents used to leave the keys in the door – they would never do it now! – and it felt like everyone knew each other. The passage of time was marked by seasonal celebrations like Carnival or Easter. The entire town was involved in one way or the other: some people decorated the streets, others arranged the dancing stage, others prepared sweets and pastries. We used to play a lottery-style board game for Women's Day. In the past the local priest arranged for the construction of apartment blocks: their original purpose was to provide a cheap, temporary housing for young couples. Now it's just a memory. My elementary school closed down a few years ago. The grocery store, the bakery, the dance hall, the stationery are gone. The apartment blocks have become a long-term solution for migrants and low-income residents. There have attempts to revive the community but they didn't catch on.

Multicultural societies, like empires, seem unlikely to ever reach a state of high trust. I'm struggling to find any historical counter-proof. The USSR tried to meld different cultures together for over half a century and its dissolution was immediately followed by ethnic separatism. The United States is also showing its cracks. New York, the melting pot par excellence, is a collection of many little ethnic enclaves and it's the farthest thing from high trust I could think of.
Red_Tarsius··on 2022 Oder Environmental Disaster
I don't mind having multiple/recurring threads on some topics. They serve different purposes: my main goal was to raise awareness on an event that seemed neglected by my country's newspapers. Then, if people catch up on the issue, it will be easier to engage in follow-up discussions when we get more data. I also enjoy to read the speculations and flow of thoughts of posters from different backgrounds.
Red_Tarsius··on Happy 15th birthday Hacker News

  Fifteen years gone by
watching tech fads come and go.
  Was that time well spent?
This website had a huge influence over my worldview and I often find myself searching through the archived comments for all sorts of topics. Here's to 15 more years!
Red_Tarsius··on Ask HN: Should I spend the next two years learning Magento 2?
Thank you for your reply! Indeed I shared your concerns at first, but I realized that it might be a great opportunity to dive into and get more experience on the other half of web development (back-end) I've sidelined until now. I really appreciate you taking time to answer my thread.
Red_Tarsius··on Ask HN: Should I spend the next two years learning Magento 2?
Thank you, I really appreciated you taking the time to write such insightful reply. In the end I chose to join the program and your post played a part in my decision! You just might have changed someone's life along the way.
Red_Tarsius··on The Shadow Penal System for Struggling Kids
The first lines of the article immediately reminded me of Elan school. I'm glad more people are finding out these horrific programs. Who knows how many are still out there. I was shocked especially since I had never heard of them before stumbling upon that website. I highly recommend other users to check out your link.
Red_Tarsius··on HN 15 Years ago
I signed up in 2013 but I had been lurking for way longer. I have unreliable memories of discovering the site back in 2008. I immediately knew I stumbled upon something special and the comment section ended up having a huge influence in my life. I was only in high school back then, so pretty much everything felt more intimate and meaningful. Most of all, reading Hacker News fueled my vicarious fantasy of a better life in the US. In the last few years I've been growing increasingly disillusioned with American culture though. My heart is just not there anymore.
Red_Tarsius··on The Martians of Budapest
My pet theory is that Jewish culture didn't suffer from the generational drain of monastic orders. In Medieval times, a smart Jewish kid – especially future Rabbis – would be expected to "be fruitful and multiply". A smart Catholic kid would more often become a celibate cog of the Church, thus ending their line.
Red_Tarsius··on They thought they were going to rehab but ended up in chicken plants (2017)
> Men who were injured while at CAAIR rarely receive long-term help for their injuries. That’s because the program requires all men to sign a form stating that they are clients, not employees, and therefore have no right to workers’ comp. Reveal found that when men got hurt, CAAIR filed workers’ comp claims and kept the payouts. Injured men and their families never saw a dime.

I read this reportage years ago and it made my blood boil. For some reason, of all stories of everyday injustice, this stuck with me. My mind often goes back to this case like some sort of mental titinnus. These judges and factory owners have NAMES and ADDRESSES. They need to be REMINDED that all of this can be taken away.

Red_Tarsius··on Researchers fear a scenario in which smart speakers feed sleepers subliminal ads
They are kind of doing it already e.g. I hate when ads exploit classical music for trivial purposes. Whenever I hear Libiamo ne' lieti calici now my mind instantly fills with pizza ads. And once an association is made, it doesn't go away. Ads attach themselves to positive memories like parasites. Whenever you think back to your first kiss, a nice family moment, a cherished memory of going out with friends – here they are.
Red_Tarsius··on An Italian village where the houses have eyes
>peeing against houses was considered a bit rude but somewhat normal in a pinch.

I find that statement misleading. No, peeing against houses was/is not a socially accepted behaviour in Italy, at least not where I lived. Normal implies some degree of acceptance. You can receive a hefty fine for indecent behavior and people don't react well when drunk rowdy students "tag" their turf.

Red_Tarsius··on Pandemic homeschoolers who are not going back
I received the link months ago from another source who attended related workshops. The leak part is letting parents know that this is going on at all. After all people can't google an unknown unknown. But it's amazing how non-chalant they are about their indocrination efforts.
Red_Tarsius··on Pandemic homeschoolers who are not going back
Here's a leaked resource guide for teachers and educators in the NY area. Notice the "Early childhood" folder. There's a lot of pressure to integrate this kind of activism into the curriculum throughout the school year. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1LGslwJwhXvpVnDgw0uC-...
Red_Tarsius··on Pandemic homeschoolers who are not going back
If I were an American urbanite I would 100% homeschool my children too. Sending well-meaning kids to an inner city school should be considered a form of abuse.
Red_Tarsius··on In Mexico, cartels are hunting down police at their homes
>The are certainly not much more than any other country.

I appreciate your naivete but we have to face the truth. The homicide[+] rate of South Africa (as of 2018) is 36.40. For comparison, Afghanistan is 6.6. The US sits at 4.96. Most of Europe is below 3. And that's just the kiling part. South Africa is notorious for its rampant sexual violence. [++]

[+] Within the broad range of violent deaths, the core element of intentional homicide is the complete liability of the direct perpetrator, which thus excludes killings directly related to war or conflicts, self-inflicted death (suicide), killings due to legal interventions or justifiable killings (such as self-defence), and those deaths caused when the perpetrator was reckless or negligent but did not intend to take a human life (non-intentional homicide). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intention... Red_Tarsius··on In Mexico, cartels are hunting down police at their homes
"Not a failed state"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_San_Fernando_massacre

>Mass murder of 193 people by Los Zetas drug cartel at La Joya ranch in the municipality of San Fernando, Tamaulipas, Mexico in March 2011. Authorities investigating the massacre reported numerous hijackings of passenger buses on Mexican Federal Highway 101 in San Fernando, and the kidnapped victims were later killed and buried in 47 clandestine mass graves.

>Reports mentioned that female kidnapping victims were raped and able-bodied male kidnapping victims were forced to fight to the death with other hostages, where they were given knives, hammers, machetes and clubs to find recruits who were willing to kill for their lives. In the blood sport, the survivor was recruited as a hitman for Los Zetas.

Just another day in Mexico. The S. Fernando massacre is not to be confused with another mass kidnapping of students in 2014. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Iguala_mass_kidnapping

Red_Tarsius··on [dead]
If you look at my post history I strive (or at least I used to) to post content that might be relevant to the HN crowd. Admittedly, I submitted this topic out of sheer frustration for the cultural suicide that's going on across the pond. It's not about this specific tweet per se, but the normalization of this teacher's attitude is a worrying trend and imho worthy of discussion.
Red_Tarsius··on Ask HN: What was the biggest contributor to your happiness in the past year?
Living in a safe and homogeneous country. I don't have to worry about being mugged or beaten while talking a walk. I don't have to worry about random episodes of violence. I don't have to worry about protesters burning and looting my home. After 2020 I realized I took this for granted for way too long.
Red_Tarsius··on A minimalistic site to vent and see others doing the same in realtime
Congrats it's a very fun idea! I haven't been this excited about a website in a while. I hope it's going to stay up for a long time. Good job OP!
Red_Tarsius··on Capitol Attack Was Months in the Making on Facebook
>The Capitol Attack

Where was this rhetoric when Antifa and BLM burned and looted for months with the blessings of all corporations and the mainstream media? Surely the Capitol Hill has an insurance policy? Or does that moronic point only apply to the common folk?

Susan Rosenberg literally bombed the Capitol in 1983 and now serves as vice chair of the board of directors of Thousand Currents, a "non-profit foundation that sponsors the fundraising and does administrative work for the Black Lives Matter global network, among other clients."

Red_Tarsius··on Facebook Indefinitely Suspends Trump
Say what you will about current events but when big tech can prevent the sitting President from addressing the people, they have too much power.
Red_Tarsius··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
That's the first line of the proem and complicated tells us nothing about the protagonist. Everyone can be complicated, but only Odysseus is πολύτροπον. It's a quality of character few people possess. I feel like Pope's line, despite the artistic license, kept that uniqueness.
Red_Tarsius··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
Emily translated the first line of the Odissey as "Tell me about a complicated man". She almost went with "Tell me about a straying husband". Neither complicated nor straying husband appear in the original text. Pope's description (The man for wisdom’s various arts renown’d...) is closer to the epithets we are taught at school (ricco d'astuzie or dal multiforme ingegno). πολύτροπος means resourceful, of many skills, well-travelled.
Red_Tarsius··on How and why I stopped buying new laptops
When I submit recent duplicates I'm usually redirected to the original discussion. It didn't happen this time so I assumed I was the first user to bring it up.
Red_Tarsius··on The Internet Is for Porn
This article gives me the same vibes of that comic strip set in a post apocalyptic wasteland: "But for a beautiful moment in time we created a lot of value for shareholders". It reads like a parody of SV culture. Can some woke capitalist please tell me what's so empowering about women who are forced to sell body pics for a living? Should we thank OnlyFans for exploiting the lack of safety net in our society?
Red_Tarsius··on 'I am mine': Alzheimer's at 41 (2018)
I've recently discovered Everywhere at the End of Time by the Caretaker (James Kirby). It's a series of six music albums exploring and depicting memory loss, Alzheimer's disease and dementia. I wish I had the writing skills necessary to convey the emotional turmoil I went through by listening to the six stages in one sleepless night. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJWksPWDKOc I also appreciated the attention to the details from the track titles to the choice of album covers. The last image – a broken canvas seen from behind – is especially haunting. It's the kind of experience that makes you re-evaluate many life choices.
Red_Tarsius··on Mishima in the Twenty First Century
Yes I'm sure Mishima would have loved to see his own country flooded with migrants. When you think about it, Mishima was totally a liberal ally, not like those other right-wingers. /s

>In the sociological sense, recuperation is the process by which politically radical ideas and images are twisted, co-opted, absorbed, defused, incorporated, annexed or commodified within media culture and bourgeois society, and thus become interpreted through a neutralized, innocuous or more socially conventional perspective. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recuperation_(politics)

Red_Tarsius··on How Mormons built a startup ecosystem in Utah
Perhaps you shouldn't embarass yourself with false analogies (caste system, hukou issues). Utah being majority white _is_ the issue for the author. His implied solution is to dramatically change the demographics of the state and disrupt a successful, safe, high-trust society.
