RedShift1··on FFmpeg merges WebRTC support
That's impossible, VLC supports everything. If VLC doesn't support it, it doesn't exist.
RedShift1··on My five-year experiment with UTC
But the ticket doesn't say "in the middle of the night" or "night", it just has the date and time.
RedShift1··on KDE for Windows 10 Exiles – Upgrade your software, not your computer
Nah it was the same when Windows XP went EoL, people were also up in arms having to replace computers that worked perfectly fine for them.
RedShift1··on KDE for Windows 10 Exiles – Upgrade your software, not your computer
Tbf it was the same story when Windows XP went EoL and by now almost all of those have been replaced. So what's most likely is that Windows 10 will stick around for some time until it silently fades away, just like XP did, regardless of CPU/TPM shenanigans.
RedShift1··on My five-year experiment with UTC
> book a flight on Wednesday 1:20am, head to the airport on Wednesday evening because they think “well the flight is on Wednesday right”, and find out that it is actually Thursday after midnight.

This bit here, I don't understand what Thursday is supposed to do here. If my flight leaves Wednesday at 1:20 AM, I'm leaving for the airport Tuesday evening.

But if I'm interpreting OP correctly, people are booking flights for Wednesday 1:20 AM but leaving for the airport Wednesday evening? Why would you be confused about that?

RedShift1··on My five-year experiment with UTC
I don't get the flight example? Wednesday 1:20 AM = Thursday 1:20 (24 hr notation)?

Anyway it seems to me this whole problem arises with 12 hour notation.

RedShift1··on HTAP is Dead
Yes but it provides a standardized way to deliver a unified interface to query your data, which is what OP is after?
RedShift1··on HTAP is Dead
Maybe GraphQL can be your savior?
RedShift1··on The principles of database design, or, the Truth is out there
Article sounds like it was written from a purely theoretical perspective and not from what happens and the requirements in real life.
RedShift1··on Ask HN: What's your go-to message queue in 2025?
I use SQLite as an offline buffer for telemetry data, basically one thread does INSERT of the payloads and another thread does just SELECT and then DELETE when it has successfully transmitted the payload.
RedShift1··on Ask HN: What's your go-to message queue in 2025?
It's not a message queue?
RedShift1··on Ask HN: What's your go-to message queue in 2025?

RedShift1··on Ask HN: What's your go-to message queue in 2025?
I use NATS too! It has worked very well for me, using it to collect data from IoT devices. I don't really like all the other bits they tacked on like jetstream and object store, that seems beyond its scope. Subject authorization is also painful to implement. But runtime behaviour has been flawless for me.
RedShift1··on Ask HN: What's your go-to message queue in 2025?
People will call me crazy but why not SMTP for message queueing?
RedShift1··on Car companies are in a billion-dollar software war
HPE also had this issue with their ILO 4. New firmware fixed that issue but if your flash chip was already worn out you're out of luck and the only solution is to replace the entire motherboard.
RedShift1··on Throwaway Code: Don't recycle, throw it away (2017)
It'll be a cold day in hell before I start throwing away my 80+ "New" notepad++ tabs.
RedShift1··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
Desktop linux doesn't even have anything close to things like group policies. And if by magic that function would appear tomorrow, it would disappear again the day after tomorrow. Sure active directory and group policies have their flaws but its ease of use and tight integration blows everything else out of the water.
RedShift1··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
They have been breaking things left and right for quite some time now, I don't think they care about this anymore.
RedShift1··on Why did Windows 7 log on slower for months if you had a solid color background?
Par for the course with Gnome though, if you like customization, KDE is better.
RedShift1··on Synology Lost the Plot with Hard Drive Locking Move
It's all fun and games until your volume shows up as RAW and you're dead in the water.
RedShift1··on Apache ECharts
I like Plotly.
RedShift1··on The state of binary compatibility on Linux and how to address it
I hate compiling. 9/10 something goes wrong. Sometimes I can fix it, other times I just abandon the effort and use something else. These days I just use packages or docker images and if that doesn't work out I'm moving on, ain't nobody got time for this. You really can't expect people who just want to use their computers and don't even know what a compiler is to get involved in a process like that.

This may install fast but it certainly looks hard to get going with it...

RedShift1··on Hard numbers in the Wayland vs. X11 input latency discussion
As I understand it, the tearing thing (no vsync) was only implemented after Valve pleaded, begged, and sacrificed a small animal to the Wayland developers.
