Rebles··on Ask HN: Have you been laid off?
At the beginning of the year, I decided it was time to find a new job after 10 years with my employer. I spent February doing interview prep and conducting interviews. Back then, the COVID-19 was mostly limited to China, markets and governments weren't terribly concerned about COVID-19.

I accept a job offer, put in my two weeks notice, and my last day at was last Friday. Hardly anyone was seriously concerned about COVID-19 when I gave notice. A week later, business travel was suspended and WFH policies implemented. My last day, schools were closing, and the economy tanked. This week, we're sheltering in place.

I gave myself 3 weeks in between the old and the new job, you know for relaxation and travel. Instead, I'm sequestered to my house for 3 weeks.

Everyday, the news got worse and worse and continues to get worse and worse. Now, I'm in between jobs, and am a little worried my new employer will revoke my job offer. To add insult to injury, one reason I didn't leave my previous job was job security. But in February, there wasn't any sign of an economic downturn. Everyone was enjoying the bull market.

Rebles··on Trial of programmer accused in CIA leak ends in hung jury
The prosecutors would ask this question during jury selection. If you lied and it came out during the trial, the judge would replace you with an alternate.
Rebles··on UC Santa Cruz fires 54 grad students who were striking for higher pay
Your second reference also points out UCSC's operating budget for 2016 is $722 million. Revenue and expenditures have likely increased 4 years later, but the $13 mil represents a 1.8% increase in operational cost. The UCSC administration would have to cut other programs' budgets in order to make the difference.

I'm an UCSC alumnus, and I served as a student rep on UCSC's Academic Senate's Committee on Planning and Budget (CPB). I've sided with the graduate students in this case. If you follow the subreddit r/UCSC, you will see the student body is largely divided on the issue. Now, subreddit posts are a small sample of the student body, it does affect the perception as well as the notoriety of UCSC being a liberal school full of hippies that always fight for worker's rights. It is harder to rebuild that kind of reputation in the school's brand. And it also negatively affects alumni fundraising.

It puts the UCSC administration between a rock and a hard place. I've worked with the administration in the past. They are intelligent and caring faculty members trying to walk a tight rope every year with UCOP/Regents increasingly demanding in delivering in business objectives (increase enrollment/revenue) on one side and their academic mission on the other. I do not envy them.

UCOP miscalculated this entire affair. UCSC grads going on strike has also encouraged UC Berkeley's and Davis's grads to strike in solidarity. The administration has never been able to handle student protests with the best optics, and unfortunately, student protests historically do not succeed in getting their demands met. It is.. a teachable moment, well steeped in irony.

Rebles··on In Santa Cruz, a graduate student strike grows out of a housing crisis
I think odiroot's comment was satiric.

It's regular park not an amusement park. I don't know what you want "in them" other than hiking paths, picnic tables, parks free of trash/debris, respectable camping grounds, running water and toilets. Maybe you're not a nature person, but that seems worth $10 to me.
Rebles··on Let's Encrypt has turned on stricter validation requirements
I may be naive, but it seems like it might be more secure if the first step was to deploy a self-signed cert on the server, step 2, give Let's Encrypt the public key of the self signed cert, so Let's Encrypt can validate who you are, then proceed with Let's Encrypt's regular validation process, obviously replacing your self-signed cert with the one issued by Let's Encrypt at the end.
Rebles··on Microsoft Teams Now Available for Linux
My critique at work includes, MS has advised our IT department not to have team workspaces larger than 150 people. Our company is 120,000. My product has 8,000 people working on it. No one can find the right teams workspace to have the discussion–also the same discussion is happening in multiple channels across different workspaces. Also, their UI is clunky. Their "new post" and "comment on threads" is confusing for some in our workforce because they're often next to each other. Also, their Activities/Feeds is pretty simple ATM. I want more control over what shows up there.

The pros include, good audio calls. Compared to Skype for Business, it's a much needed improvement. Their Office 365 integration is also pretty good a la google docs.

It's a resource hog, but that's the status quo these days.

Rebles··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2019)
Do you have a job posting portal? I couldn't find one on your site. Your product and tech stack looks appealing. I was curious about a job description if you had one available.
Rebles··on Apple reportedly building iPhones, iPads without Qualcomm chips
Qualcomm has to decide which impacts its business more: loss of Apple as a customer, or drop in revenue per chip due to licensing.

Obviously, Qualcomm doesn't want either, which explains the lawsuits filed. But if Apple can turn to Intel and MediaTek as suppliers, that cuts Qualcomm completely out. What choices does Qualcomm have left other than to capitulate to and mollify Apply?

It's fascinating to watch two large corporations publicly duke it out. I think Qualcomm has overplayed their hand. I'm not sure what other customers they have (probably Androids?), but without Apple, what does Qualcomm become?

Rebles··on I'm Returning My Apple Watch 3 Cellular
I don't blame him for not paying close attention to "coming soon." If you watched the Apple Watch Keynote, the emphasis was on the experience of a tetherless Watch with streaming/phone/text services. If you're paying for that experience, I can understand why you would be frustrated. On the other hand, when you're on the bleeding bloody edge, maybe that experience is rough around the edges. A little patience would go a long way for this reviewer.
