Reason077··on Red Hat being phased out of existence?
I spent a few years at Red Hat. Great company back in those days. I wonder how mucb IBM has changed it but some of my former colleagues are still there, years later, so it can’t be too bad!

It does remain one of my regrets that I cashed out my vested stock options much too soon. If I’d held on to them until the IBM buyout I would have done very well for myself!

The irony is that this article reads a lot like it was written by AI.
Reason077··on San Francisco Onion Futures Company
Are these contract prices really "per onion"? Or are they actually per pound or per kg? Up to $9.39 seems very expensive if it's really the price for a single onion.

I thought maybe they're some sort of special exotic onion variety, but I don't see anything to suggest that.

Reason077··on iPhone Duo
Still on 87% battery health on my iPhone 13 (not mini) that’s approaching 5 years old. Still an awesome phone with great battery life!

I don’t plan to update it beyond iOS 18 though, and the Lightning port is becoming more and more of a pain over time.

Reason077··on iPhone Duo
The iPhone X also had smooth rounded edges and was small by modern standards (bigger than the 3GS, though). Still one of my favourite iPhones.

Most people now days put their phones in protective cases, so the sharp edges don’t matter too much. And if anything, it makes the cases easier to design and smaller/thinner.

Reason077··on iPhone Duo
Try Garmin if you want a round smart watch. They get good reviews and the sporty types who own them swear by them.

Can’t imagine Apple ever doing this, though, because a round display is pretty terrible for displaying the sort of content and UI elements that iPhone/Apple Watch users are used to. Much of the UI and all existing apps would need to be completely redesigned.

Reason077··on A/I shuts down
> ” They are obviously a terrorist organization”

“Organization” is a stretch. Criminals? Sure. Violent thugs? Maybe.

The “terrorist” word, however, has been stretched and distorted for political ends. It seems like any crime motivated by political or religious ideology is now “terrorism”, and thus subject to much harsher punishment than those same crimes would normally receive.

By this definition, the Jan 6 rioters were terrorists - yet they received pardons.

Here’s a wiki article that I found helpful:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autistici/Inventati

“Autistici/Inventati (A/I) is an Italian hacktivist group that provides Internet communication services for left-wing activists. It was founded in 2001 by members of the anti-globalisation movement…”

Besides that, all those plasma screens running for >18 hours a day will be using a lot of energy, and generating a lot of heat that puts more demand on the air conditioning!

Replacing them with more modern screens would save a lot of power and money.

(I know a guy who still uses a ~20 year old plasma TV. It still looks great but it doubles as a heater in the winter time!)

Reason077··on Iceland votes on whether to restart talks on joining EU
> ”This means giving up all the advantages of central banking … It's a marker of a failed state.”

There are a number of countries/territories which have their “own” currency, but its value (exchange rate) is fixed directly to the USD:

• Hong Kong

• Saudi Arabia

• United Arab Emirates

• Qatar

• Jordan

• Oman

• Bahrain

• Panama

• etc

These are not failed states!

Reason077··on USDA recalls 30k pounds of Argentine beef sold in Texas and Florida
This was back in 2024, when Argentina used to have severe restrictions on foreign exchange in an effort to (artificially) prop up the value of the Peso. This made it difficult for Argentine companies to purchase the foreign currency needed to import things like 5G equipment, hence this weird beef-for-telecoms equipment deal.

Argentina liberalised its Foreign exchange market in April 2025 so I'd imagine this sort of thing is no longer happening.

Reason077··on USDA recalls 30k pounds of Argentine beef sold in Texas and Florida
Except this recall was originally announced on August 7th, predating Trump’s imported beef announcement/promotion by a few weeks?
Reason077··on USDA recalls 30k pounds of Argentine beef sold in Texas and Florida
What makes you think this is “evil and self-serving”? It affects a relatively small quantity of specific products from a specific supplier with specific use-by dates.

In any case, this is Argentinian beef, not Canadian or something. Isn’t the US administration pretty friendly with the right-wing populist Argentinian government?

Reason077··on Worst-case glacial lake flood scenarios in a transboundary Himalayan basin 2022
Looking at the footage, the water/avalanche was moving far faster than anyone could move on foot. Well over 100 km/h, I would estimate.
Reason077··on Wi-Fi 8 is the first wireless upgrade in years that isn't chasing speed
Yeah. I ran ethernet from my router specifically to improve games streaming (GeForce NOW). It was a huge improvement over standard 5 Ghz WiFi.
Reason077··on Wi-Fi 8 is the first wireless upgrade in years that isn't chasing speed
It's nice to have the fastest Wi-Fi possible even if your upstream internet is slower. Sometimes you want to transfer files locally between devices, or run backups etc. Faster Wi-Fi here can make a huge difference to those tasks.
Reason077··on Wi-Fi 8 is the first wireless upgrade in years that isn't chasing speed
Oh no. I haven't even upgraded to WiFi 7 yet!
Reason077··on Asus Bike Booster
Yes, there’s no doubt that mid-drive motors are the ideal. But in most cases, it’s not realistic or affordable to install a mid-drive motor as a retrofit.

And not all hub motors are low-power. You can get Chinese ones with insane power output. (5000W! … just remember that Europe has strict power restrictions on e-bike motors.)

Reason077··on Asus Bike Booster
Conversion kits that add a front hub motor are relatively affordable and easy to install. Should work with most cargo bikes if you can find one that's compatible with your wheel size. Something like: https://swytchbike.com/
Reason077··on England set to be one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C
> “There are no regular checkups or preventative care on the NHS for mid life adults unless you're proactive”

This isn’t quite true. There is a free “NHS Health check” for adults aged 40-72, which you’re supposed to do every 5 years and includes basic checks like blood pressure and cholesterol. I certainly get messages from my GP nagging me about it from time to time.

Reason077··on Illinois just passed a law that puts Linux on the hook for age verification
> ”Linux distro founder here (stagex)… designed to work offline-first, with some variants not even supporting network drivers”

If your OS doesn’t access the internet or isn’t intended to run browsers / social apps, then you are outside the scope of this legislation. That would be a bit like requiring a toaster to ask for your age before letting you operate it.

Reason077··on Illinois just passed a law that puts Linux on the hook for age verification
Nothing in this bill requires age verification. It just requires the OS to have a way to specify the user’s age (not necessarily an exact birth date), so that it can be provided to apps and websites that ask for it.
Reason077··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
> ”… not everyone has the means to drop $400+/y³ on a watch & plan. Smart phone & plan prices are high enough already.”

Oh come on, it’s not $400/yr. I pay about $5/month for mine, added on to my phone plan and sharing the same number.

And for most functions (including navigation!) you don’t even need cellular service.

I think we’re all a bit too dependent on our phones so it’s nice to have an alternative that lets you go phone-free sometimes.

But for me it’s really just about convenience. I like to run light and lugging a big heavy phone is a bulky distraction.

Reason077··on My phone detects going on a run as “someone snatching my phone and running off”
> ”Adding “running” to the list of things that Google engineers apparently don’t do.”

Not with a phone, no. Why would you take your phone with you when you run? It’s bulky and annoying.

If you really need to be reachable or to be able to pay for something in emergencies, that’s what smart watches are for.

Reason077··on Decades-old fish sauce at abandoned factory in Canada finally being removed
I’m not talking about sterilizing land. Just that salt is not a desirable ingredient in fertilizer. Most plants will not thrive in salty soil, even if it doesn’t kill them.
Reason077··on Decades-old fish sauce at abandoned factory in Canada finally being removed
Absolutely. So the ideal solution would be to return it to whence it came, but presumably that’s easier said than done if they’re going to all this trouble to bury it in a plastic sarcophagus instead.
Reason077··on Decades-old fish sauce at abandoned factory in Canada finally being removed
> ”It may have a short-term change in the local environment, but long term it's fertilizer.”

The fish would make for great fertilizer, but the salt would not. High salt concentrations will kill many plants and probably would stick around in the soil for a long time.

Reason077··on Turning a dumb AC unit smart (without losing my security deposit)
> "I'd never trust that it will hold and detach without residue, but that is probably my ignorance talking.."

Command Strips work similarly to the adhesive that holds batteries into phones. Very strong hold in the directions that count, but pulling the tab stretches them in a way that causes their structure to collapse and release. Must have for anyone who rents a house and doesn't want to put holes in walls etc, but I've also found them to be very useful for all sorts of off-label applications.

They're strong enough to hold heavy picture frames etc on to walls, lasting for years and still detaching easily. I'd certainly trust them to secure this little motor!
