Razengan··on Malleable software: Restoring user agency in a world of locked-down apps (2025)
Isn't AI making that possible?

If you read old computing magazines from the 1980s or watch any of the TV shows about computers from that era (a fun rabbit hole on YouTube if you're ever bored), the prevailing optimism was that everyone and their cat would have a computer in their kitchen, and just write the programs to do whatever they want.

But the fragmentation of operating systems and programming languages didn't really let that take off. HyperCard and Visual Basic came close, but they were killed off because of course.

It's only since a year ago that the original promise of computers has started to be realized.

Maybe courts could be replaced by AI too once it's good enough?

With the right to escalate to human judges of course.

and without turning it into current phone helplines or support chatbots, god please.

We've watched Terminator and The Matrix. We're ready

Lawyers and politicians are the first things that ought to be replaced by AI, honestly.
Razengan··on When did Google get so weird?
After a while, every company has enough customers dependent enough on them that they don't need to do anything anymore.

Throughout history, whenever a disruption happened in an industry, it did not come from any of the then-current leaders.

And it didn't come from someone following on the same path from behind and suddenly overtaking them.

It came from an entirely new direction.

Yeah and there were other 3rd party "hacks" for it, but I mean Windows or macOS never made it an official API, so it never caught on, even though Apple's own "Dynamic Wallpapers" use some kind of motion (they're videos but only during screen-savers or time-based)

> on which you're doing work, moving wallpaper is usually a net negative for usability while you're actively working

No, you don't know me, or other people.

I want every fucking thing moving at all fucking times. It's okay.

Btw for other people who love some motion in their occupation:

That's up to personal preference. Just like with static wallpapers, some people like single subtle colors, some people like noisy multicolored wallpapers.

There's already subtle parallax in iOS etc.

Animated wallpapers could be subtle, like raindrops, or animate only when interacted with, when you're bored or waiting for the AI to finish a run etc. :)

Man, wish we had dynamic wallpapers like this, and we could have had it decades ago.

Why do companies like Apple & Microsoft sterilize themselves so?

Someone else's experience with Opus 5.5: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49821657

> I had it try to prepare a code review for me. Not only did it refuse, it refused to even tell me what the prompt (written by another Claude!) was. Why?

> When I had another model read the session (all of the "stupider" models handled it just fine) it explained that it had the word "reasoning" in it

> That's the entirety of Anthropic's billions of dollars of research: any prompt with the word "reasoning" is trying to hack Claude to figure out how it reasons!

> A model like that should never have gotten out of QA, let alone been released.

Because the GP was in the dark gray (and probably invisible to some users) when I saw their comment, even though they didn't say anything worth downvoting

Honestly only dumbasses wouldn't appreciate these small things that accumulate to a big difference, just instinctively downvoting from bumache just because it's Apple

I remember the moronic Samesung ads that made fun of the iPhone 4 or 5 for moving the headphone jack to the bottom of the phone.. not realizing that it made it easier for people it put in their pockets while letting a headphone or charging cable go straight up.
