RandyRanderson··on Just got this notice from my bank: No more Firefox
Note: MBNA Canada is owned by TD.com (one of the 5 major banks in Canada) and not the US MBNA. In my estimation, it's likely that they've looked at the numbers and are essentially 'firing' FF customers b/c they don't drive enough rev.

CIBC (another bank here) has been doing this for at least 15 years by offering seemingly 'cheaper' banking services using the same systems but different brands (eg PC financial). The downmarket brand seems cheaper on the surface but they take away all the costly things the flagship brand gives away (eg in-person banking, no fee transactions, etc) and charge [more] for them.

Our telcos here do the same thing with MVNOs (eg Rogers, the flagship brand, owns Chatr, for poor ppl).

RandyRanderson··on How did REST come to mean the opposite of REST?
REST, SCRUM, Agile, etc these are just cargo cults built from temerity (in the blindness sense).

A 'Canada' should be another word for an oligopolistic (maybe that's a word?) state.

Mobile carriers - 4 control 98+ % of the market

Internet - 4 control likely 90+ % of the internet market

Banks - 5 control 90+ % of retail banking. The rest? Credit Unions who have themselves mostly merged into https://www.central1.com/

Insurance - 6 control 89%

Media - 4 control 70%

Grocer - 5 control 60%

Movie theaters - 2 control 99%

Have a look at Canada for your future.

TLDR: Canada is about TWICE as expensive as PT.

Mean house prices 2022may (CAD) . Vancouver 1.374 MM . Toronto 1.354 MM

Median HOUSEHOLD income 2022apr: . Vancouver 71.5k CAD . Toronto 70.6k CAD

price/income (HOUSEHOLD!!!) . Van 19.22 . Tor 19.17

For reference PT (couldn't find per city): . Average salary: 12 * 1,517 EUR = 18.2k (2020) . Average home price in PT: 368,441 EUR (2021)

PT price/income (HOUSEHOLD!!!): 368,441/(2.018.2k) = 10.12 * assume 2.0 persons in a household, in the US it's 2.53 but not all of those ppl work: https://www.statista.com/statistics/183648/average-size-of-h...

RandyRanderson··on The Scaling Hypothesis (2021)
Also, we need to show that the data costs, dev costs, training costs, maint, etc, and inference time costs are cheaper than human alternatives for some reasonable loss function, for most tasks.

If you look at the FN and FP rates for many tasks, the SoTA Transformer models are all VERY high vs humans and inference times are maybe only 10x.

At 100x or 1000x the transistors, data, etc and even at 1/10 the loss, ML solutions are likely not competitive for many tasks.

Let's rewrite the microservices wiki as bit:

"A microdata architecture – a variant of the data-oriented architecture structural style – arranges data as a collection of loosely-coupled data. In a microdata architecture, data are fine-grained and the relations are lightweight."

Likely most experienced data architects are now laughing at what a dumb idea the above is. That's the same reaction I had when I first heard of microservices - "that's obviously a bad idea; ppl aren't that dumb", I thought.

RandyRanderson··on UML Diagrams Designer via Code
Bullet points for requirements and one "box, swimlane, and cylinder" diagram (with no standard elements) for analysis and design if you're on a 'strict' project.

If we can't even decide on language A or B, CSV or JSON, ... (these are implementation artifacts that are essential to the solution), what hope do we have of even understanding- no even seeing that there is a problem in the other disciplines (requirements, analysis, etc) of technology delivery?

If we make it another 100 years, we'll look back at this time and view what we are coding now as wattle and daub huts whereas a century from now we'll be erecting the analogue of technological skyscrapers (but probably not good ones, if I'm being realistic).

RandyRanderson··on UML Diagrams Designer via Code

Facebook made fake accounts scraped from their school athletic websites. reddit initially made fake accounts to seem like they had more users. Ashleymadison made fake profiles to lure users (I'm sure almost all dating sites do this). These are just the ones I know of off the top of my head.

RandyRanderson··on “Decolonising Math”: Durham U Asks Professors to Consider Race of Mathematicians
Steinbeck once said "a man has only himself as a meter stick" (paraphrasing).

Given an accusation of bias, most ppl imagine that they have wronged someone (b/c they can only imagine doing so honestly).

For narcissists, something not working out for them must be b/c of someone else. Here it takes the form of accusations of racism. This is preferable to narcissists as opposed to taking responsibility.

RandyRanderson··on Comparing Go vs. C in embedded applications – Stack Overflow Blog
One of my favourite Go posts from awhile ago was a Go v Java/C where both beat Go handily in speed. The author then went on to declare the winner Go b/c Go used less mem than Java and had mem management while C didn't.

This led me to Randy's Law of Benchmarking: Unless an author publishes what result they want beforehand, any benchmark the author produces is invalid.

Corollary: Even the ideation of a benchmark has bias embedded in it.

The S&P was flat for 6 years following 2007 in the US. Doesn't seem like a good path to follow.

RandyRanderson··on Canada to ban foreigners from buying homes
The Canadian economy is almost entirely dependent on real estate[0][1]. It's almost a certainty that the Liberal government would never hurt that sector in any meaningful way. I'm guessing that they're run the numbers and they know this won't have any real effect (other than political points scoring).

Most of the RE demand comes from immigration (in CA, currently more than 1%/year) - look at any country that has high immigration and you'll see huge appreciation in RE (CA, AU, NZ, etc).

You will also see a huge decline in birth rates in those same countries.

RandyRanderson··on Ask HN: How to Learn Software Architecture?
Every current architecture is a good one, until there's enough support to replace it; it is then, clearly a poor architecture - always has been.

More seriously, creating architectures in a systematic way produces 'good' architectures more often than not. Have a look at the Unified Process[0] for an approach.

RandyRanderson··on Java Development on an Apple M1 – A One Year Review
I understand your point. The article is about Java dev from a Java dev's perspective so your assertion "if I know Docker" is often not true for this class.

As opposed to my assertion: "a Java dev knows one of {gradle, maven, shell} is almost always true.

RandyRanderson··on Ask HN: What are solid examples of well written HTML and CSS websites?
To be clear, I think the authors of the browsers have in general done a heroic job. I'm not talking about the browser impl, I'm impugning HTML and CSS as UI specification mechanisms.
RandyRanderson··on Ask HN: What are solid examples of well written HTML and CSS websites?
This is a great comment. I'm pretty sure every non-trivial website would be better specified (as opposed to HTML) in almost any measurable way (LOC, clarity, etc) in say raw opengl.

Yes, creating a UI in an immediate mode tech would be pretty hard - still easier than HTML/CSS.

I'd love to see someone prove me right: Take any non-trivial site like twitter, facebook.com, whatever and reproduce it with opengl/d3d or whatever. I bet it will be less LOC (incl all the libs the source website includes), more clear, easier to extend, faster to draw, et cetera.

RandyRanderson··on Java Development on an Apple M1 – A One Year Review
Answers to your questions:

Yes, Yes, Yes, often teams use shells script, gradle or maven.

The same config you'd put in the docker yaml or whatever would go into the maven or whatever config except that the devs would be familiar with the existing tools and wouldn't spend countless hours mucking about with docker files.

Also unless you're using docker on x86 AND linux, likely things will not work or at least you'll run into mem, or perf or other compat issues.
