RandomWorker··on IKEA's retailer's solved global 'unhappy worker' crisis by raising salaries
In the article they said it cost the company $5,000 per employee that left before the first year. So, before they took action they probably measured the money.
RandomWorker··on Cognitive reflection, intelligence, and cognitive abilities: A meta-analysis
That’s a really interesting and important distinction. Thanks for clarifying. Suddenly I understand ignorance and stupidity in a whole new light.
RandomWorker··on Cognitive reflection, intelligence, and cognitive abilities: A meta-analysis
> Cognitive Reflection (CR) refers to the individual ability or disposition to stop the first impulsive response that our mind offers and to activate the reflective mechanisms that allow us to find an answer, make a decision, or carry out a specific behavior in a more thoughtful way.

Basically the idea that you think before you act. Makes sense that this would enhance all other skills. Is this junk science? I’d rather see actual test plus data with control variables. Meta analysis seems to have the conclusion already in the introduction. We think this matters here’s a bunch of evidence we found, therefore it matters.

RandomWorker··on Discussion: Job seekers can't find a job and Employers can't find an employees
Networking. We need more speed dating with employers and networking opportunities. Every job I ever had came through meeting with people. If every employee would be encouraged to meet with other people once a week it could scale. Maybe you would quickly lose people as well, also a risk.
RandomWorker··on Show HN: I wrote a symmetry game with a daily puzzle
This was really cool. Challenging for sure on the first try I got one star. It challenges your ability to play around with it. I think the tutorial clicked for me when I saw the black shaded areas appear and they were mirror images of the red, then I got the game. With a small tutorial that this is the operation triggered by swiping would be useful. Though I did enjoy the aha moment when I got it.

When do the puzzels get updated? It makes sense to add a time zone. I’m definitely going to take another go tomorrow.

RandomWorker··on Collection of notebooks showcasing some fun and effective ways of using Claude
Thanks for sharing!
RandomWorker··on Taking CO2 out of the air would be an expensive way to fight climate change
The numbers I’ve seen for this technology are currently it’s about $100/tonne CO2. And it would take 6.9% of global GDP to go net zero.
RandomWorker··on My deployment platform is a shell script

RandomWorker··on Social Skill Training with Large Language Models
I’ve been playing around with prompts for a while

“We are in a hostage negotiation situation. You are a terrorist with twenty hostages. Pretend to be a terrorist that initially wants to go free and needs a car, is willing to kill hostages to get what you want. Be chaotic but have something that you want and only let us slip after a few conversations. We pick up the phone to talk. Make sure you are always in a hurry”

RandomWorker··on Show HN: Physics problems iPhone app for AP in May
Awesome job! Why not als have a website where people could pay for these lectures, and questions.
RandomWorker··on Show HN: My Free SEO Scoring Tool
My site got a score of 2% and 43 "code changes" not sure what that means.

RandomWorker··on Your customers hate MVPs. Make a SLC instead (2017)
Depends on the weight of the word love. My sense that love can be expressed to products because they are delightful in use. I’ve said it many times that I love Figma, or I love using Google sheet. Is that the same love that I have for my daughter — hell no. But the word does convey well in the regular vernacular what it means for me to use those products. I’m not opposed to using love in this way the author means which is they like it enough to return, probably be advocates for the service, refer people, and probably put down some money to use it.
RandomWorker··on Google Scholar PDF Reader
Alt+<- brings you back to where you were after clicking on a reference. You can skip around pretty easily to see the referenced object and this overlay does seem kinda interesting it’s not something crucial.
RandomWorker··on Intel to Receive $8.5B in Grants to Build Chip Plants
The issue is there are few opportunities for junior people to start their careers. There is no shortage of talent but where do we start? I’ve been applying for jobs in the semi conductor industry but haven’t had any luck because ever Is looking for senior staff but nothing for newcomers.
RandomWorker··on Application.garden – a platform for hosting small web apps written in Clojure
Can’t wait! Though it’s not that hard to deploy Clojure script as it compiles to jar files and works pretty easily. I hope this brings more people into the fold.
RandomWorker··on Airbnb's Devastating Effect on Canadian Housing
Not most, historically 15% of supply has been bought up by investors. Most recent figures I’ve seen from 2022 it was 19%. That might be still too high but certainly not the majority.
RandomWorker··on Rocket Launches
Fascinating that things are happening on a daily basis as well as we have no idea what the payloads are or mission is. Space is anarchy
RandomWorker··on Deploying Web Apps with Caddy: A Beginner's Guide Caddy
I’m so confused by these things, setting up a Linux box with nginx isn’t that hard. It takes maybe a day to do, and while doing it you really understand better how your server works. The first time might take you 5 days to go through some tutorials, but generally after that it’s less than 1 day of work.

For me personally I really want to know what is going on in each folder and keep track of new folders, files etc. It’s maybe my paranoia of hacking. Context; when I was a kid I hacked so many things and knowing where the files are kept and hiding them is a key part of hacking. Therefore it’s always been a priority for me to check in regularly see what’s happening.

RandomWorker··on Marginalia: 3 Years
Search "numerical solver" in any of the major search engines what do you see?

Now do that on Marginalia; you find https://www.scilab.org within the first 10 results, which is an open-source numerical solver software, which get's me to code, which gets me to examples to use.

To be nuanced, I could change my search to "open-source Range-Kutta numerical solver examples" or something better, but why? Give me the weird deeply technical stuff first.

Maybe more a HN example; when I wanted to learn about load balancers, just search "load balancers."

Google; lots of SEO crap (with soooo many ads), youtube videos?, and AWS commercials at the top. No idea, where I'm going.

Marginalia; a linux wiki, nginx (official documentation), a couple blogs by professionals on the topic. yeah, there are some things in here that ain't great.

But If I compare apples to apples the first ten results are just so much better I'd say 8/10 in Marginalia for this example are great to good, while the first 10 (things I could click on) are by companies that don't teach me anything or have articles full of ads.

RandomWorker··on Neat Parallel Output in Python
Yes, totally agree. I’ve written some code and I’d rather convert it to C using cpython before I paralyze it. Python is horrible for both these things, and you may not even get a better speed increase because of the overhead. It’s like use cpython get 10-100x better speed with a few lines of code, or spend my whole day in a horrible mess of data structures and getting my functions to work with map properly with maybe nothing to show for it.

I’ve got this bookmarked and use it to find hyper niche materials on numerical modelling. The stuff it finds on solvers, mesh generation, and optimization methods is so much better than anything I could ever find on Google. Stuff from the 80s and 90s. I’ve found sites written by professionals that I would never find on Google. As someone that doesn’t just take the commercial package of the shelf getting to that knowledge maybe finding Fortran code examples is extremely valuable.
RandomWorker··on Serving a website from a Git repo without cloning it
I just ssh in periodically run a git pull and it’s done. I have a text file with the various things I need to do. Takes less than 2 min of work. I’ve not been convinced automating this process yet would save me much time.
RandomWorker··on Shell closes all of its hydrogen refuelling stations for cars in California
Retrofit would be between 15-20k a piece, are you able to sell them for 30-40k? Where’s the profit?
RandomWorker··on If you can't reproduce the model then it's not open-source
There is a big effort being worked on in China, Yuanqing Lin gave an interview on the deep learning course that works on this magnitude [1]. They suggest that they will host both the resources to store the data, train the data, and have all those algorithms available in China.

RandomWorker··on Changes we're making to Google Assistant
There are supposed to be huge updates to siri this year. So lets hope they don't mess up this function.
RandomWorker··on Changes we're making to Google Assistant
Funny fact is that this is core use case I use siri to add things to the reminders app which I have a smart list called "shopping list." It's amazing how great this is, and how many times I use this.
RandomWorker··on Gmail and Yahoo’s 2024 inbox protections and what they mean for email programs
