RandomGuyDTB··on Hackers (1995) is free to watch on YouTube
Looks like it's been available since October 1st, this isn't an illegitimate upload either.
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: What is your favorite screen recorder?
This is a life saver, thanks for sharing.
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: What is your favorite screen recorder?
OBS has been useful, so has Overwolf, but I think the best tool I've used has been Quicktime on OSX. It's much easier to use than most things. My go-to on Windows is the XBox Game DVR recording functionality but I only use it because the alternatives are pretty slow.
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: How is FB Messenger on ios in terms of privacy?
The platform itself is super insecure (this is my opinion and I understand it may be untrue) but if you're on the newest version of iOS Apple has had a reliable track record of protecting users' data. I would put Messenger on my iPhone if I had one.
RandomGuyDTB··on Suggest some good computer/IT related movies/documentaries?
The IT Crowd.

Ludicrous display last night, am I right?

RandomGuyDTB··on Status.github.com: “We're failing over a data storage system”
Earlier GitHub pages was "down for maintenance". Probably not related but might be of note.

The Thinkpad X1 looks good for what you want:

RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: YouTube down?
I think it goes more like

Where were you when YouTube died

On HN of course

and why were you not offline

putting off dealing with my divorce

I wish paul allen was still alive

..?

(has more of a feel to it, alternating rhymes.)

RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: YouTube down?
Let's make sure to make this the next stanza ;)
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: YouTube down?
I use a TamperMonkey script that does that for me, still down.
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: YouTube down?
500 of them?
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: YouTube down?
"And why were you not offline?" (continuing song lyrics i think we're making)
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
Fun fact: While the later (PSP3000) models could, early models (PSP1000) couldn't charge via mini USB. Not too relevant but it's a common misconception.

RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: What are your favorite browser games?
Nice but you missed a terrific chance to name said library "gOGame". ;)
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: What are some great retro computing projects to contribute to?
You can help transcribe the code from the original Apollo Guidance Computer: https://github.com/chrislgarry/Apollo-11
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: What are your favorite browser games?
I personally really enjoy Johnny Upgrade and Combat: Online. They're in my gaming site, games.instantfloppy.net. Originally by Gameshot and Nadgames respectively.
RandomGuyDTB··on Show HN: Rubik's cube variants in different shapes and sizes using canvas 2D API
Pretty cool but it'd be nice to have buttons to turn the cube rather than gestures - or at least an option in the settings for it. Love it either way.
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: Is 23andMe DNA testing worth it?
I think that's only an exaggeration of likelyhood, not of quantity. There are forty bazillion bacteria in nearly everything we touch, if you foster the right ones you get that many good bacteria rather than mixed. Having forty bazillion probiotics isn't extreme but the human mind can't conceive of large numbers such as this so there's an indirect implication that this is indeed an extraordinary product.
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: How is your programming-at-home/hobby environment set up?
I currently do a lot of TI-84+ programming (I'm in high school, can you tell? :) so I don't need much but I tend to have the TI Device Explorer open in one window at the top right corner (this is Windows, few of these apps work in Ubuntu sadly), an IDE in the left half, and Windows Explorer in the bottom right. Sometimes I also have some website in the background in Firefox for reference. Maybe I'm not your target audience but I figured I'd chime in.
RandomGuyDTB··on VirusTotal slips on biz suit says Googles daddy will help the search for nasties
I thought this was a really dumb attempt to troll HN but this is an actual article so I don't even know anymore.
RandomGuyDTB··on Introducing Cloudflare Registrar
I second this. I have my domain instantfloppy.net hosted on GDomains and use Cloudflare for DNS but I'm going to transfer "mid-November" for sure. I wholeheartedly trust Cloudflare. They've shown their commitment to privacy and I don't understand what their endgame is but I want to believe they support a better Web.
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: What's going on with the angst on Hacker News?
I think I might step away as well. There is a very large amount of frustration, it seems, at the lack of privacy concerns, the failures of governmental power to stop it, and the fact that "mainstream media" (I really don't like using the term) doesn't report on privacy nearly enough. There's a lack of transparency that's been apparent for years but has been tacitly approved of. As for a timeline, to me the "privacy war" if we're calling it that began when the US made it legal for ISPs to sell data. Google is just a very large target for collateral damage.
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: How to go back to classic Gmail?
I wish I knew... Anyway, ditto: The new Gmail looks awful to me. So does the new Chrome actually. I wish there was an option to roll back to 2015 in terms of design for everything.
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: Smartphone for privacy-consious users
It's a nightmare for any amount of time. The web browser is simply unreliable and I haven't been able to use it at all. I don't recommend this phone for anything other than texting and calling, even the music player sorts by name rather than track number in the album listings.
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: Smartphone for privacy-consious users
I actively use a #4 (the Samsung Freeform 5) as my main phone. It supports calling and texting, but that's about it. Works decently for its purpose but you have to remember that you lose the ability to view emojis and read group chats on a dumbphone, plus the web is slower than molasses and you have to send a text if you wanna tweet with it. I don't recommend this and I'm getting supplies to upgrade to an iPhone 4.
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: What automator scripts have you written to make your life easier?
Damn, that sounds really useful. Any source? :)
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: Is there a browser I can pay for?
I'd recommend Firefox with a paid VPN instead. PIA is supposed to be good as a VPN (Private Internet Access), I personally use HOXX for free when I need one. NoScript + uBlock Origin + a VPN should leave you nearly 100% secure but if you wanna go full throttle Tor is an option.
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: Best alternative to Gmail?
ProtonMail. Definitely ProtonMail. You can live off it for free as long as you delete old stuff but paying better for I think $5 a month (maybe more or less). Free is perfectly adequate for me personally though, I made the switch a couple months ago and haven't looked back. Might wanna set up auto forwarding though: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/10957?hl=en
