RamshackleJ··on What America looked like before the EPA, in photos
I know its tempting to chest-beat for the EPA as the protector of citizens but they have a track record of staying silent or even covering up. https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/2016/01/12/e...

And most of the money for cleanup comes from taxes. Its a nice roundabout/inefficient way to make citizens pay for the pollution of large interests.

In my opinion its more plausible that pollution has decreased due to citizen awareness and organization rather than the EPA.

I think S&P gives the US a AA+ rating. I don't know much about "a culture of saving" but I'm pretty sure economies don't grow forever

RamshackleJ··on Our Broken Economy, in One Simple Chart
I think the writing done on cost disease might better explain the gap rather than inflation (http://slatestarcodex.com/2017/02/09/considerations-on-cost-...)

Inflation would imply that everything is increasing in cost at about the same rate. Instead we have ballooning costs for a few critical expenses(housing, eductation, healthcare).

RamshackleJ··on Boutique medical services offer wealthy Americans the chance to cut the line
why is this market failure automatically attributed to too much regulation instead of the wrong kind of regulation. Wealthy elites paying 40k to set a broken bone shows exactly why deregulating would be disastrous, medical decisions are rarely made rationally. There is a quote from the article that implies that these elites would pay anything.

"But when you have kids, you jump the line. You just do. If you have the money, would you not spend it for that?"

Unregulated markets do not work for this type of irrational actor. Please stop spreading lies about how to fix this problem. Instead maybe look at countries that regulate it correctly(Spain).

RamshackleJ··on Boutique medical services offer wealthy Americans the chance to cut the line
"You can always get better faster service if you pay more." - Just because that's how things are now doesn't mean its ideal or the only way.

Benjamin Franklin while an unrepentant capitalist, tempered that with protestant values and a sense of civic duty. Allowing money to control how critical social functions work: elections, medicine, education directly undermines them.

Maybe you could pick one of those things from your list and try to find ways to make it better both for the individual and the common good.

It became ok when emotionally frail tech CEO's needed to cope with nagging existential fears of _not_ actually making the world a better place, while at the same time frantically trying to succeed so that they won't be left with the horrific ignominy of not being successful _and_ making the world worse.
RamshackleJ··on Comcast says it will not sell customer browsing histories
Well currently name resolutions are not encrypted and I don't think it is technically possible to encrypt them, so we definitely aren't good. Asking everyone to route through a CDN is a bit impractical as well.

a good follow up article if you're interested: https://www.teamupturn.com/reports/2016/what-isps-can-see

Even a tiny bit of data(think DNS name resolution) collected over a long period of time can be pretty invasive to a persons privacy.

RamshackleJ··on Big Tech Company Salaries Are Hurting Startups
I'm always curious about companies who talk about "caring about things other than just money". Maybe I'm missing somethings but if you are a for-profit company by definition you care about money, any claims other wise feel like marketing.

No. You are thinking about it wrong. By making it cost prohibitive for the poors to move around we will be able to concentrate their populations into designated "bottom feeder" neighborhoods allowing us to more effectively rob them of basic public services like education, healthcare, and potable water.
RamshackleJ··on How Camus and Sartre split up over the question of how to be free
what are the public academic debates that we are having today? creationism vs evolution? populism vs neo-liberalism?

I hate to reminisce but having two existentialist philosophers debating about socialism vs communism makes me jelly.

Because you have to have a special permit in order to offer free food to the needy in city parks. But obtaining a city permit to feed the homeless twice a week—to set up a table and open bags of chips and bagels and spoon organic beans and rice from a pot—can be pricey because of the insurance policy the city requires.

Cool.

Not to diminish the accomplishment but...

There are entire states with lower avg household incomes. 20% below the poverty line is also substantially lower than many rust belt cities (detroit metro: ~39%, flint: ~55%, gary: 48.5%).

Pieces like this are dangerous because they distract us from the often insurmountable challenges many children in america are born into

RamshackleJ··on Why a Universal Basic Income Will Not Solve Poverty
not sure about the top 3% but the top 1% have 34.6% of the wealth(measured in net worth) and the top 5% have 61.9%. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wealth_inequality_in_the_Unite...)

So yes! I do think its too little, especially in the top 1%. I think some moderately more progressive tax rates would be an improvement.

One of the things that appeals to me about UBI is that it is a dramatic simplification of welfare bureaucracy. I would love to see something similar to the way we calculate taxes. Simplifying and closing tax holes would help extract more taxes from people who should be paying more while not punishing wage earners who have most of their taxes preempted out of their paycheck.

RamshackleJ··on Why a Universal Basic Income Will Not Solve Poverty
Yep, and it doesn't even bother talking about the $21–32tn of untaxed assets(http://www.taxjustice.net/cms/upload/pdf/Price_of_Offshore_R...). Or that we tax the rich too little while we tax everyone else too much to keep public perception focused on taxes being too high(https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Historical_Marginal_...).
