RajT88··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
On Nextdoor, I have met several people who believed solar and wind polluted more than coal plants.
RajT88··on Improper redaction reveals Google Data Center water and electricity usage
The argument they make is, "it is food and we eat it". Nevermind most of the corn grown is not eaten by people.
RajT88··on What is going on with ceiling fans
Feels like anything with LED lights is designed to only last a few years. Things start getting hinky, eventually ends up as eWaste.

By me they are converting cornfields to data center campuses. People hate it and are against it.

They are also building solar farms independent of the data centers. People hate it and are against it.

They just built a Costco which turned some cornfields into a giant warehouse. No signs, no protests, no complaints at the city council meetings.

RajT88··on Nazi Germany had no hope of making an atomic bomb, uranium cubes reveal
I took a spin through wikipedia - the roots go well back into pre-Christianity.

It's pointless to try and make this point with fans of Mr. Carlson. They don't want to know.

The word "algebra" comes from Arabic al-jabr - so it's Muslim math to them I guess would be the talking point?

With his seeming love of certain periods of German history, I think it's appropriate to observe that Tucker Carlson has a backpfeifengesicht.

RajT88··on When did Google get so weird?
Google has been weird since they started offering auto-complete for the most common searches matching yours.

Lots of people have made hay of this. My own realization that this gives you a window into the weird was when watching an action movie with a female action star, it would offer "(actress name) feet". I have no idea what it means, but it is a pattern.

RajT88··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
Let's see how it works out for them. Screwing around with immigration on the precipice of a population crash seems like... Not a great idea.
RajT88··on The Mafia may be keeping fentanyl out of Italy
Carfentanil has got to be closer to that. It is said to be up to 100x more powerful than fentanyl.

Micrograms (yes still many molecules) could be lethal

Here and I thought I was a weird nerd, but TIL there is a Pewter society.
RajT88··on The science of Monkey Island: can grog dissolve a metal mug that fast?
I hadn't replayed it all the way through as an adult, not from start to finish.

So I sat down, had a couple beers and played it all the way from the beginning.

It's exquisite, but short. A lot of care went into that journey though.

I would also recommend reading all of the comics you can get ahold of, and then also watching the Fox TV show.

> At this point I have the feeling dell just charges you what they think they can get out of you

This is how license compliance shakedowns work. Make sure your DRM is more flexible than theicensing terms, find an overage and see what you can get the customer to agree to.

I have seen senior Oracle sales reps deliberately misreading their license doc to inflate what is owed.

> "fahrenheit is more human"

This is among the least stupid claims us Americans make in defense of our measurement system.

RajT88··on How to Write with an LLM
Indeed. I have been experimenting with using frontier models for creative writing.

Using adversarial models to evolve ideas. I have a whole novel of material, and the feedback has indeed been useful. But the actual novel? Not even AI models like their own writing once you give the simple prompt of "account for model sycophancy".

The resulting structure and plot beats are good with AI as copy editor. Only the least discerning reader might not care or notice the actual non-human writing. And hey - maybe those are your readers. Probably not.

Can we all appreciate for a moment the sci-fi dystopia which snuck up on us all? I just used to phrase: " non-human writing". 50 years ago, that would send a chill up your spine.

RajT88··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
I rented one of these for a while after my wife and I moved in together. After a bit, I realized what we had paid for it was close to exceeding the value of the items stored within .

Just get rid of your stuff when you can. Life will be better.

This explains all those lots of "untested" WiiU's I see for sale.
RajT88··on Original Sony PlayStation 2 security chip 'broken wide open' after 26 years
In 30 years you may need to modify your PS5 just to get it booting. A lot of retro consoles have to be recapped.

Also the plastic gets brittle. I was replacing a fuse on a PS2 motherboard and some of the ribbon connector pieces just shattered on reassembly. There are many challenges to preservation. Eventually all that old hardware will be all gone.

RajT88··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
Totally agree. Establishment Democrats are against these expansion of powers, but then when they have the opportunity to roll them back, they treat them like they got free stuff instead of inheriting toxic waste.
RajT88··on 25 Years of Mass Surveillance Is Enough
"After HRT" is the key word. The new regulations I am referring to had to do with how soon after was sufficient to remove advantages due to residual testosterone. There were other regulations which were total horse shit to your point.

I would agree that the number of people we are talking about is very small. It was to begin with a very niche issue.

RajT88··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
I would say it slightly differently: humans themselves are tribalistic, and politicians are looking for ways to tap into that to gain and hold onto power.
RajT88··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
The funny thing about that is - it's a solved problem. The reason you heard about it for a while is that they hadn't tightened up the rules yet. As with anything, problems are highlighted, they are studied, and new rules are put into place to account for what was learned. Right wing media of course discovered a boogeyman that was so useful they will be using it for years still, even if it doesn't exist.
RajT88··on 25 years of mass surveillance is enough
> It says that the government “will prioritize the rapid identification and neutralization of violent secular political groups whose ideology is anti-American, radically pro-transgender and anarchist” and “will use all the tools constitutionally available to us to map them at home, identify their membership, map their ties to international organizations like Antifa.”

So, Democratic candidates who are looking like they will win a seat this midterm cycle are going to get arrested for "domestic terrorism".

RajT88··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Those are the ones I am keeping an eye on most closely. In a few generations they might be where they need to be for a "floating monitors" experience in AR.
RajT88··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
I suspect that the current design of VR/AR is not likely to get cheap enough and light/small enough to catch on in a big way. Kind of seems like diminishing returns on headset improvements at this point.

RajT88··on Flock cameras used to arrest a child for playing on a swing?
Ugh. Parkrose Permaculture.

I actually like her videos, and watch them to learn about some of the issues. I generally agree with her. Hear me out.

I had an "AHA" moment recently, where she posted a video about data centers. There's real issues there. I don't disagree with most of the issues, but I do disagree about the prioritization of the issues. Being a techie, I am directly involved in hosting workloads in data centers for my company. I know more than a lay person about what data centers are about.

So the very first time I watched a video on a topic I am a SME on, I saw her weigh in with the hot take of "All these data centers are basically surveillance centers!" She's not wrong, but what she is is just repeating what everyone on Facebook is saying without actually trying to understand the issue. Charitably this is word-for-word what people who are waking up to the issue are screaming all over social media, or less charitably people consuming a lot of astroturfed content.

TL;DR, I realized she's not really educating herself on the issues via deep dives before forming an opinion, she's just repeating what everyone else is saying on social media. She's no better than all my neighbors on Nextdoor, just a much better public speaker. If you're screaming about "surveillance centers", you are uninformed if you're not talking about data brokers. Nobody screaming on social media about data centers is. This very forum has people who have worked for data brokers saying things like, "It's 1000x worse than you think it is."

So, unfortunately, I can't use her content to form opinions. Even though I agree with her on most things. I can't trust that she's actually got her facts straight - she's running a confidence game. It's like finding a PR from your trusted coworker with a really, really stupid nasty bug - "what else is out there that they've touched...?"

Now that I've got that put out there...

This new privately owned surveillance network in a sane version of this country should be found unconstitutional, and this story about preteens being brought up on charges is only surprising for the reasons she highlighted.

I think I read almost the same quote in a Heinlein novel.
